Using templates

Now what? Lesson file- check recording settings, begin recording, use captions, navigation, skin settings, etc. Main file – replace lesson titles, objectives, summary text, adjust number of lessons, images, create intro’s, quiz, adjust conclusion, resources, check navigation, adjust launch button links, skin settings, etc. All – Discard or hide informational template slides. © 2007 ADP, Inc.

Conclusion Whether your courses are directed at software skills or soft skills, use templates to provide a consistent environment for your learners and streamline your development efforts.

Adobe Captivate Template Considerations Consider these questions when developing templates or course structure. This is not an exhaustive list, but attempts to capture what we have encountered.

Overall Course Elements –

What will the title slide include?

Will there be "about this course" information? If you use a playbar, this could be included on the Info option.

Will navigation tips be included for the first time user?

Where will lessons be located; same or separate file?

How will the learner know they are starting a lesson?

Where will a quiz be located?

Is there a course conclusion?

Navigation –

What page navigation will be used (Info, Back, Next, Exit)?

Where will the page navigation be positioned?

Will the page navigation positioning persist throughout all slides?

How will lessons be accessed; button menu, text list?

If the lesson is a separate file, how will the learner access the file, a simple link to the file?

Will you be using javascript to control the pop-up window? We execute the following javascript: newWin9('FolderName\FileName.htm', '','width=925,height=655,toolbar=0,menubar=0,scrollbars=0, resizable=1,status=0,top=0,left=0');

1

Style –

What common graphics will be included?

Is there a color scheme?

Lessons Elements –

Will lessons include an introduction slide?

Is there a standard Summary slide?

Does each lesson have its own quiz?

How will the learner know when the lesson concludes?

Navigation –

What page navigation is used?

Will a Skin playback control be used?

Will the navigation obstruct the content?

Will branching be used?

Are you using any custom captions or buttons?

Instructions for customizing text captions can be found in Captivate Help.

Are you using a caption color scheme? What caption represents a

Style

demonstration versus a simulation? –

What sample highlights should you include?

Is there a standard rollover style you want to promote?

2

Quiz Settings Reporting –

What format does your Learning Management System (LMS) support? AICC, SCORM, etc.

Generally, reporting with AICC or SCORM requires the normalization of scores. Therefore, Percent should be selected in the Report Score to LMS.

Pass or Fail –

What percentage will represent a passing score?

If the user has a passing grade, what action should be taken?

If the user has a failing grade, what action should be taken?

Default Labels –

Quiz slides have some standard button labels. How do you want them labeled?

What default question feedback, if any, do you want to include?

Some preference selections can be saved with the template. Are there some

Record Settings

basic setups you want to promote? –

You can’t save a default caption with your template. Therefore, what instructions would you like to include within the template file for your developers to follow prior to recording?

3

Skin Settings Playback Control –

Are you including a playback control? Which control will best represent your style?

Is it necessary to include all the buttons on your playback control?

Borders –

What background color would you like to set your course against?

What default information would you like to include in the course?

Each developer will need to place any custom buttons and captions in the

Info

Publishing

appropriate Captivate program folder. Typically, these folders are located in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 3\Gallery.

We made modifications to the standard.js file located in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 3\Templates\Publish to control the pop-

up lesson window. We used the following javascript code: function newWin9(theURL,winName,features){ window.open(theURL,winName,features);}

We also modified the SCORM.htm and standard.htm files to use

https://

instead of http://. This resolved a secure/non-secure warning when playing through our LMS.
