DEUX RIVES SKATING CLUB Parent Information CanSkate is a learn-to-skate program designed for boys and girls of all ages. CanSkate introduces basic skills and fundamental movements of skating in a fun, active group lesson format taught by NCCP certified coaches and trained program assistants. The skaters are taught basic principles of skating (go forward, go backwards, turn, stop, jump) to prepare them for all ice sports. Our CanSkate program runs from September 27, 2014 to March 14, 2015. Lessons are given on Saturday or Tuesday or Wednesday with parents having the choice of 1 or 2 lessons per week. The children are placed in groups according to their age and skill level from the beginner and up. You may notice that there are other groups on the ice working on the same badge or skill. While they work to achieve this there may be changes made in the groups, our coaches endeavor to match them with others learning at the same rate. These adjustments in the group are made so that the skaters complement each other where everyone can learn and have fun at the same pace. CanPowerSkate's Pre-Power is designed for young skaters who are interested in playing hockey or ringette. Pre-Power helps develop basic skating abilities in a power skating-specific environment, including balance skills, forward and backward skating, stopping, turning and agility skills. Pre-Power has been designed to run concurrently with CanSkate sessions. For more information about our programs kindly contact the Club office by telephone at 514-626-6350 or by e-mail [email protected] or visit our web-site www.cpdeuxrives.com Page 1 of 5

DEUX RIVES SKATING CLUB Equipement and Safety Skates: Either hockey or figure skates can be worn in CanSkate. Skates can be purchased in a variety of price and quality ranges. Before buying skates, check carefully for:  Proper fit, avoid buying a larger size for skater to ‘grow into’.  Firm ankle support, which allows your child to stand and walk in the skates without their ankles turning inwards.  Good quality. Moulded plastic skates are not recommended . Boots with buckle or velcro fastners are also not recommended.  When purchasing used skates please ensure that the toe picks have not been removed. Make sure that the blade is straight and centered and can still be sharpened. When holding the skate up the boot should not fall to one side.  Sharpen skates as soon as they are purchased. Care of skates:  Re-sharpen skates after 20-26 hours of skating (depending on usage and care)  The toe pick (bottom) should NOT be removed from the skates. The pick is part of the design of figure skates and are needed.  Always wear skate guards when walking off-ice.  Dry blades with a cloth after use.  Always remove guards before storing skates to prevent them from rusting.
