Descendants of Thomas Grover Generation No. 1 1. THOMAS1 GROVER was born Abt. 1514 in Chartridge, Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England, and died January 1578/79 in Chesham, Bucks, England. He married ELIZABETH NEE? Abt. 1537. She was born June 15, 1516 in Chartridge, Chesham, Buckshire, England, and died January 1597/98 in Chesham, Bucks, England. Notes for THOMAS GROVER: The name "Grover" is not widely spread in England. Our line of Grovers arose at Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England. The first recorded Grover was Thomas of Chartridge, Chesham, Buckinghamshire. The name comes from the old English word "greave", which was a woodland path cut through a thick forest to make hunting easier. The first Grover was "Greaver" or one who cut a greave and had his cottage at the beginning of the greave. Later, the "grovers" cultivated fruit trees (mainly apples). Chesham, England is known as a fruit growing area. I. Thomas Grover of Chartridge, Chesham, Buckinghamshire, was born about 1514. He married Elizabeth (last name unknown) about 1542. II. Their son, Stephen, was born about 1543, at Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England. Stephen married Elizabeth Chase (or Chaase) of Chesham on November 17, 1566. III. Lazarus Grover, their son, was christened on February 2, 1575. He married, at London, Godsgrace King. They settled in Hertfordshire, which is directly north of London and is noted for its' numerous gardens and orchards. From here fruit has been sent to the London markets for centuries. Lazarus Grover was buried March 1648 at Aldenham, Hertfordshire, England. His son Thomas, was born at Chesham, Buckinghamshire. IV. Thomas Grover was the first of the line to come to America. He was christened on November 26, 1615. He possibly came as early as 1630, and may have accompanied Governor Winthrop, but there is no record of this. Governor Winthrop was the founder of Boston. His expedition is described by Robert Bartlett in his book, "The Pilgrim Way", Published in 1971. "Governor Winthrop arrived with a large expedition to found Boston and its' first church. Aboard his flagship, the 'Arabella', Winthrop led a fleet of 17 ships, carrying nearly a thousand settlers to New England. His vessels were amply provisioned with food, beer, wine, and fresh water." If Thomas Grover was in the Winthrop group, he would have been about fifteen years of age. It was the custom in those days to apprentice the young boys in order for them to learn a trade. He possibly was a carpenter's apprentice. The Winthrop party first landed at Charlestown, then many of them moved across the Charles River to establish Boston, where the fresh water supply was better. About 1638, at age 23, Thomas Grover married Elizabeth (last name unknown) . They became the parents of nine children. In 1643, Elizabeth was recorded as being admitted to the Church and was described as "Ould goodwife Grover". She probably was only in her late twenties and had born only two of her nine children at that time. Another source states Thomas Grover (1) was born April 22, 1520 in Chartridge, Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England, and died January 1578/79 in Chesham, Bucks, England. Generation No. 4 4. THOMAS4 GROVER (LAZARUS3, STEPHEN2, THOMAS1) was born November 26, 1615 in Chesham, Bucks, England, and died October 28, 1661 in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA. He married ELIZABETH SMITH Abt. 1638, daughter of MATHEW SMITH and JANE. She was born 1618 in Charlestown, Malden Co., Massachusetts, and died October 1676 in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA. Notes for THOMAS GROVER: Early records of New England show the above Thomas Grover as being "of Charlestown, Mass., 1638-39, and of Malden, Mass., 1640. "He may possibly have accompanied Governor Winthrop's Colony from England in 1630", 4

as stated in "National Cycloped of American Biography", Vol. 8, P-5, But no direct proof or evidence of such has yet been found, nor any record showing exactly when and how he came to New England. He was, quite evidently, in the Boston-Charlestown area in 1637-1638, before settling at Charlestown and Malden. "Boston (Mass.) Registry Dept. Records", Vol 3, pp-27 and 101) of early land holdings in Boston and Charlestown, show Thomas was a resident of Charlestown as early as 1638-39, and a property-owner in 1640; he either settled on the Mystic (north) side of the Charles River, at Charlestown, or very early removed thereto, for such mention as is made and found consistently calls him "of Charlestown and Malden". (The Northeast part of his large Charlestown area soon became Malden township, covering a considerable area). Records of early Charlestown show Thomas Grover's home was located where the present streets of Bow, Main, and Prescott adjoin, in the "old" Charlestown section (near the Navy Yard). His wife, Elizabeth, was a member of the Church in Charlestown, though there is evidently no record of his church membership (quite evidently the same church, however, as everyone was then compelled by law to attend church services at least each Sabbath day). He was a "planter", or farmer, in this large Charlestown-Malden area. He died October 28, 1661, at Malden, and after 14 years as a widow, his wife Elizabeth re-married - April 7, 1675, to Philip Atwood, a "planter" and Constable of Malden. At Thomas' death, his widow Elizabeth, and eldest son, Lazarus, were appointed joint administrators of the father's estate; later in April of 1675, when Elizabeth remarried, Lazarus was made the sole administrator, and also "guardian of his minor brothers", to assure their receiving their full and just shares of the father's estate, which had not yet been settled in that fourteen year period - evidently due to there being several minor children involved. Thomas Grover, Sr., named several of his children in his will: Lazarus, Thomas, Andrew, Elizabeth, and John, but did not name Simon, Mathew, or Stephen; these latter are, however, believed to be the children of Thomas Grover and wife Elizabeth, as noted below, together with the repetition of given names found in his own father's and grandfather's family in England. Also, evidently, to Thomas being the only possible (known) father of these three young boys, according to their apparent ages (from approximated birth dates, as judged from marriage and death records. Upon Thomas' death, the inventory of his estate showed a dwelling house and 45 acres of land then valued at about 157 pounds, after all debts were paid. This was (apparently) broken up or divided into shares of about 5 acres for each child (except Lazarus, who as eldest on received a double portion, as was common practice). Elizabeth, the widow, received the dwelling house with all furnishings and household goods, and each child evidently received a single portion - about 5 acres - of the lands. Grace had died in 1658, before her father's demise. Andrew, Elizabeth, and John died in 1674, and the inventories of their estates each showed a 5 acre parcel of property - evidently from their father's estate. Thus it appears that the father's estate was divided into nine shares and distributed to each child, except Lazarus, who received his double portion. Mathew was not named in Thomas' will, but research has turned up a deed, or bill-of-sale, in early probate records of Middlesex County, Mass., showing that Mathew Grover, of Charlestown and Malden, sold a small piece of land in late May 1675, and this deed bears the signature of Mathew, and also the signature (by mark) of Lazarus Grover, though Lazarus is not mentioned within the document himself. We know, from court and town records, that when Thomas, the father, died October 28, 1661, that Lazarus and his mother were then made joint administrators of the father's estate, and that fourteen years later the widow Elizabeth remarried - April 7, 1675 to Philip Atwood of Malden. The courts then appointed Lazarus as sold administrator of the father's estate, which had not been fully settled in that long period of time (evidently due to minor children being involved). And, Lazarus was then made the "guardian of his minor brothers" to assure their receiving their full shares of the father's estate when their mother married again. The above document (bill of sale) is the only such record found of Mathew's signature, and the only bit of proof of his family connections. From all available evidence it appears that Mathew was still a minor - still under full legal age, at the date of the above sale of this small piece of property, and found it necessary to also have Lazarus approve the transaction, and sign the document with him, to make it fully legal, though the deed does not plainly show this; Lazarus evidently signed it as administrator of his father's estate, and also as guardian of his minor brother, and it thus appears that Mathew was one of the "minor brothers" of Lazarus, and thus a son of Thomas Grover and Elizabeth of Boston-Charlestown-Malden. The description of the property bounds shows that this piece of property adjoined other lands of "Thomas Grover, deceased", and thus indicates it may possibly have come to Mathew directly from his father, or from the father's estate, or possibly from the estates of the two brothers (John and Andrew), and/or sister Elizabeth, who had died just the preceding year (early 1674).

He married SARAH CHADWICK May 23, 1668, daughter of JOHN CHADWICK and JOANNA. She was born June 01, 1650 in Watertown, Mass., and died October 1722. Notes for THOMAS GROVER: Thomas' will was probated in September 1711, Malden Mass. Probate and court records show that Thomas Grover made his home at Malden after a short and unsuccessful attempt, together with several brothers and other relatives, at settling in the "Quansigamond Plantation Area", near Grafton and Worcester, Mass., in 1674-75;- they were driven out by the Indians, at the beginning of "King Philip's War", of 1675-76. In the large Charlestown-Malden-Reading area, Thomas became a builder of homes (cabins), barns and outbuildings, often finding it necessary to take the buyer to court, to recover some of the monies due him from this construction work on their homes and property. 6

7. MATHEW5 GROVER (THOMAS4, LAZARUS3, STEPHEN2, THOMAS1) was born 1655 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA, and died Abt. 1679 in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA. He married MARY DAVIS July 30, 1673 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, daughter of GEORGE DAVIS and SARAH CLARK. She was born January 16, 1656/57 in Haverhill, Essex, Mass, and died November 29, 1727 in Reading, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Notes for MATHEW GROVER: Mathew sold a small parcel of property in Malden on May 29, 1675, the deed also bearing the signature of Lazarus Grover (by mark), who was then the sole administrator of his father's estate, and also the "guardian" of his younger brothers", as we learn from town and court records. This indicates that Mathew was then still under 21 years of age, and apparently Lazarus had to sign the document also, showing his approval of the sale, as guardian, and also as administrator of their father's estate. This deed has now been carefully examined and evaluated, and accepted as proof of Mathew's parentage, and thus rather plainly shows he must have been one of the "minor sons" of Thomas Grover and Elizabeth, the emigrant ancestors, of Charlestown-Malden, Mass., 16401661. Little is known or found regarding Mathew, but records show he lived in the far north end of the large Charlestown-Malden area at that time (1660-1690) known as "Charlestown Grants" or "Charlestown End", or "Charlestown Wood-Lots", the southeast end of Reading, the east edge of Woburn - later laid out as the new town of Stoneham, in December 1725. Records show they attended the old Reading First Church (most likely the nearest one). This old Reading First Church was established in 1650, and its early records show Mary (Davis) Grover's name in several entries, beginning in June 1680 (shortly after Mathew's death, evidently), and her children's names in 1694 to 1721, but evidently does not include Mathew's name; it is possible that his name was still carried on lists of the Charlestown or Malden Church at that time, as the laws of the Colony required each person to join and attend Church at least each Sabbath Day. In "Boston Registry Dept. Records", Vol. 7, pp 94 and 95, we find where Mathew Grover "of Boston" was a witness to a description of a parcel of land and its property bounds on April 23, 1675. And the same records show "Thomas, son of Mathew and Mary Grover, born January 16, 1674, Boston". All records indicate that Mathew died about 1679, or very early in 1680, at about only 24-25 years of age. Children of MATHEW GROVER and MARY DAVIS are: 13.

10. ANDREW6 GROVER (THOMAS5, THOMAS4, LAZARUS3, STEPHEN2, THOMAS1) was born October 1673 in Quansigamond Plantation, and died in York, Maine. He married MARY FREETHY in York, Maine. Notes for ANDREW GROVER: Andrew Grover, the fourth child of Thomas and Sarah (Chadwick) Grover, was born October 1673. It was that following spring that his two uncles, and aunt, and aunt by marriage, died. His father, Thomas, being a carpenter tried to establish a settlement called "Quansigamond Plantation" and an explanation of why Thomas, Lazarus, Simon, Matthew, and Stephen Grover escaped the disease was that they were away from Charlestown during the period of the epidemic. At this time, King Philip's War broke out and there was fighting all the first years of Andrew's life. Even as a toddler, the Indians harassed them so that Andrew's father and uncles had to abandon their attempt to establish the Plantation. In 1684, the Plantation was resettled and called "Worcester", but again was abandoned in 1702 because of Queen Anne's War. About 1696, when Andrew was 22, he went to York, York County, Maine, a beautiful little village on the Atlantic Coast of southern Maine. We can assume he was probably in the British Army, a part of which was sent to York after some massacres of the York villagers. In 1690, eighteen homes were burned and a number of settlers killed, among them, James Freethy (or Freethey), whose daughter Mary, later married Andrew in 1697. In 1692, the worst of the massacres occurred, when Abenaki Indians left their snowshoes by a rock and crept into the village of York, killing or capturing 300 inhabitants. A monument placed in the old burial ground at York says 220 inhabitants were killed and 80 captives were returned to York in 1698. Among the captives was James Freethy, Jr., but he never returned. After these terrible occurrences, soldiers were sent to York and they quartered in the homes. We can assume that Andrew was probably quartered in the home where Mary Freethy, her mother Mary (Milberry) Freethy, and her sister Hannah were living. In 1697, Mary and Andrew were married. In 1699, Andrew received a grant of 20 acres of land, "wherever he can find it". This was probably his reward for his service against the Indians in King William's War. Andrew and Mary Grover located their first home, "above Brixham near the Huckleberry plain". At this place, they resided until 1712, when Andrew acquired land on the southeast side and near Old Mill Creek, which became the family home until 1760. He was Surveyor of Highways in 1718. In 1720, a schoolhouse was built at the lower end of town, and the school was kept for six months at this far away location. It was kept for only three months near the Andrew Grover's. There was only one schoolmaster for the town and Andrew signed a protest, for his children were deprived of schooling with this arrangement. In 1726, he was recorded as Constable and also a "tithing man". Besides contributing a tithe to the church, a tithing man had special duties. During the long sermons of those day, (sometimes as long as four hours) the tithing man would prod anyone who dozed with a long pole. Maine was part of the large Massachusetts Colony for many long years in the early colonial times, and continued as such until state boundaries were fixed and determined, shortly after the Revolutionary War. York County, Maine, was earlier known as: (1632) Bristol; (1641) Agamenticus; (1642) Georgiana; and finally, in 1652, as York. The present day York County is only a small part of what the earlier area included. More About MARY FREETHY: 8

18. BENJAMIN7 GROVER (ANDREW6, THOMAS5, THOMAS4, LAZARUS3, STEPHEN2, THOMAS1) was born November 12, 1712 in York, York, Maine, and died Abt. 1745 in Georgetown, Maine. He married MEHITABLE TOOTHAKER April 27, 1732 in York, York, Maine, daughter of ANDREW TOOTHAKER and ABIGAIL WHITE. She was born March 13, 1708/09 in York, York, Maine, and died Abt. 1795 in Georgetown, Maine. Notes for BENJAMIN GROVER: Benjamin and Mehitable were both of York, Maine with five children being recorded as born in York, Maine. It is assumed that Benjamin and Mehitable migrated to Georgetown, Maine about 1742. In 1748, Benjamin and Mehitable Grover applied for a grant of land to be reserved for 10 years. Sometime between 1748 & 1760, Benjamin died for in a deed of August 1760, his son James Grover of Georgetown, described him as "Benj. Grover dead." He may have been killed in an Indian raid. The period of the French and Indian War was 1754 to 1763. It is conceivable that the year of his death was 1757, for James, then 18, petitioned for a pension for his mother, Mehitable. James was described as a "soldier". He would have been only 18 years old in 1757. James, fourth child of Benjamin and Mehitable, was born July 8, 1739. In 1760, when he was twentyone, he married Sarah Shepherd of York. They had a large family, but Georgetown, then the frontier of the wilderness has very scant records. The names of only two of the nine children are known. That there were nine children is proven by the first census in America, which was taken in 1790. Here, James Grover of Georgetown is described as "Head of Family", with five sons and 4 daughters. The two children whose names were found were; 1. Benjamin, baptized Aug. 24, 1768 2. Bette, a daughter Benjamin was the first child of Andrew and Mary, to be born in the "new" home on Old Mill Creek, in York, Maine. Children of BENJAMIN GROVER and MEHITABLE TOOTHAKER are: 27.

22. CAPTAIN BENJAMIN7 GROVER (THOMAS6, MATHEW5, THOMAS4, LAZARUS3, STEPHEN2, THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1706 in Malden, Massachusetts, and died Aft. May 1754 in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts. He married SARAH BACON March 02, 1726/27 in Billerica, Massachusetts. She was born April 10, 1707 in Billerica, Massachusetts, and died May 1754 in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts. Notes for CAPTAIN BENJAMIN GROVER: Benjamin was born and raised in that part of the old "Charlestown Grant", or (Charleston Wood Lots", or Charlestown End") located at the far north end of this large Charlestown-Malden township area (the south and southeast edge of Reading, and east end of Woburn), in Middlesex Co., Mass. Due to the long distance to travel to the nearest church and meeting-house, (as required by law) in southeast Reading, (now a part of Wakefield town), and the extreme distance from the church in Malden or Charlestown, or in Woburn to their west, the inhabitants of this section had petitioned the Governor and Council of Massachusetts Bay Colony, at Boston, for permission to establish a new town, and build a new church in this area, calling it Stoneham. Their petition was granted and approved in the summer of 1725, and the first Town Meeting was held in December of 1725, at 12

which our Thomas Grover "Sr" was present, per town history and records. Any earlier records of this couple, and others of early Stoneham, prior to 1725, are rather few and incomplete, and would possibly be found in town records of early Charlestown, Malden, Reading, Woburn, or even in some Boston records. Unfortunately, many of the early Charlestown records were lost in the "Great Fire" of 1775-76, during the Revolutionary War, when the British set fire to the town and destroyed over half of the homes and buildings, churches, and courthouse, etc., in old Charlestown, with loss of many valuable records. Stoneham township, in 1725, consisted of about 50 to 55 families, widely scattered and rather far apart. Though Thomas Grover "Sr" (father of Benjamin) is listed as one of the original proprietors and taxpayers of Stoneham, records show he owned very little or no real estate, and little personal property, thereby rating no tax, while his son Benjamin is listed on the tax rolls of 1726-27 as owning a small amount of both real and personal property, upon which a tax was rated, and paid. Records of the old Reading First Church (now located within the town limits of Wakefield), contain several references to "Mary (Davis) Grover", (mother of Thomas Grover "Sr"), and mention her husband Mathew Grover, and their son, Thomas, later known as "Thomas Sr", evidently to distinguish between the father and his son of the same name (brother of Benjamin) who married Abigail Bacon August 1725 at Billerica, Mass. From these records it appears that Thomas Grover "Sr" was a member of the Reading First Church, but took a rather inactive part therein, perhaps no more than only attending and to comply with the laws and regulations of the Colony at that period of time. The names of Benjamin and his brother Thomas "Jr" do not appear in either of the old Reading First Church records, nor in the old Stoneham Church records. Benjamin is, however, listed in the Stoneham Town Records, and is identified there as a property owner and taxpayer for the 1726-27 period. Early Middlesex County (Mass.) probate records disclose a number of deeds, 1727 to 1736, where Benjamin Grover and wife Sarah (Bacon) purchased, and later sold, several parcels of property in the Lexington-CambridgeStoneham-Reading and Woburn area. And records of Worchester County (Mass.), 1736 to 1752, show he also bought up and later sold many pieces of property in the Sutton-Grafton area of Worcester Co., and also in Hampshire County. These all show he was a man of better than average intelligence, of fair education, very industrious and hard-working, which attributes to thrift, independence and industry he passed down to each of his several children. One of these probates of Middlesex County (February 1730/31), shows he sold a parcel of property in Lexington, Mass., February 17, 1730/31, to a Mr. Grimes. When he and his family went from Lexington to Grafton in early January 1736, the second record we find of him at Grafton is early February 1736, where Benjamin and his wife Sarah appeared before a Notary Public (Justice of the Peace) at Worcester, the county seat, and acknowledged their signatures to the deed they had issued to Mr. Grimes at Lexington in February 1730/31, covering the sale of the above property. This record, together with the following, is proof that this Benjamin Grover of Grafton came from Lexington, and the Lexington records tie him into Billerica, where his marriage record shows he was "of Stoneham, Mass." As stated above, Benjamin married Sarah Bacon, of Billerica, Mass., on March 2, 1726/27, the record very plainly showing he was "of Stoneham". (His brother Thomas had married Sarah's sister, Abigail Bacon, in August 1725, shortly before Stoneham was established). From all records it appears that Benjamin and Sarah lived in Stoneham a short time after their marriage, as he is shown on Stoneham tax records for that same period. They then lived in Lexington town for a short time, and about 1735-36 proceeded west to Grafton, in Worcester County. Among the original papers found in early records in Suffolk County, Mass., Courthouse, are these concerning a case of Nathaniel Bacon of Lexington (the father of the two Bacon sisters, Sarah and Abigail), who brought suit in court to collect a debt of 40 pounds 5 shillings, from a Mr. Samuel Lawrence. The main evidence in the case was a note, which Mr. Lawrence denied, but as the note had been witnessed by Benjamin Grover and Josiah Bacon, it was then necessary to have Benjamin Grover make and sign a sworn statement regarding the note, which reads as follows: "Charlestown, January ye 26th 1730-31. "I, Benjamin Grover, being of full age, do Testify and saith that on or about the first of September last, I being at Mr. Nathaniel Bacon's, I heard Samuel Lawrence say that they were reckoning with him, or owed him three shillings, and about ye last of October or ye first of November I being at Deacon Putman's, Nathaniel Bacon asked Samuel Lawrence eight or ten shillings for going down to Justus 13

Bowen, and Sam. Lawrence sed he wood not give it, and so after this Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Nathaniel Bacon axt (asked) Mr. Josiah Bacon to right (write) a bill, and he rot (wrote) it, and red it twice over, forty pounds five shillings, and he gave it to Mr. Lawrence and he too looked it over and sed it was a very good bill, and then he sind (signed) it and delivered it to Nathaniel Bacon and acknolidge that he owed him so much and so Josiah Bacon and I was desired to set our hands to it and we did likewise." "Sig. "Benjamin Grover." "Sworn hin Court, - attest: "S. Tyley, Clerk". (Evidently Mr. Lawrence could not read very well, and was a very poor business man, for the original debt of three shillings, plus "eight or ten shillings for going down to Justice Bowman's", had, with the interest, quickly grown to the sum of 40 pounds 5 shillings. It appears from this and several other records that Nathaniel Bacon was perhaps a rather "sharp operator" for those times.) 32. BENJAMIN8 GROVER (BENJAMIN7, THOMAS6, MATHEW5, THOMAS4, LAZARUS3, STEPHEN2, THOMAS1)3 was born November 03, 1745 in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts, and died December 25, 1835 in Vermont. He married HANNAH HARRINGTON3 August 25, 1767 in Grafton, Worchester, Massachusetts. She was born September 10, 1738 in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts, and died 1816 in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts. Notes for BENJAMIN GROVER: Benjamin was a carpenter by occupation, and was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, for which service (March 1777 to March 1780) he drew a small pension in his last few years. His military and pension application papers show he was a resident of Grafton, a carpenter by trade, was 5 ft. 10 inches in height, of light complexion and hair, with eyes "light", and that he was about 75 years of age in September 1820, when applying for his pension. Also showed that his wife's name was Hannah, and that she was then deceased about four years prior to that date. 33. THOMAS8 GROVER (BENJAMIN7, THOMAS6, MATHEW5, THOMAS4, LAZARUS3, STEPHEN2, THOMAS1) was born March 19, 1737/38 in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts, and died 1805 in Whitehall, Washington, New York. He married SARAH SHERMAN December 20, 1759 in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts, daughter of JOSEPH SHERMAN and SARAH PERHAM. She was born June 27, 1739 in Shrewsbury, Worcester, Massachusetts, and died Abt. 1804 in Whitehall, Washington, New York. Notes for THOMAS GROVER: Grafton Church records show that young Thomas and his mother, Sarah (Bacon) Grover, were both baptized on the same day, March 19, 1738. Records show that Solomon and Thomas served in the French-Indian War of 1754-56, in which Solomon was killed, or died, December 29, 1755, at Lake George, NY. Thomas, Nathaniel, Benjamin Jr., Ebenezer, and young David were veterans of the American Revolutionary War, serving from Grafton and Montague, Mass. Thomas had moved to Montague about 1765, and evidently was an officer in the local militia of Grafton, and later of Montague, and it was he who was "Captain of a Company of Minute-Men, from Grafton, who marked on receipt of the Lexington Alarm of April 19, 1775" for a period of ten days as emergency relief forces at Cambridge and Lexington, then returned to Grafton, where they were disbanded. Seeing that the Colonies were no doubt headed for a war with Britain, he then joined the Massachusetts line forces of the regular Continental Army, being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, June 12, 1775, by approval of the Provisional Congress at Cambridge that same date. He was later promoted to First Lieutenant, and served in the capacities under various commands until discharged, or released, late 1781, at the close of the War, with short intermittent breaks allowed when possible, between these engagements, to return home to sow the crops, and later to harvest them, thus providing in some measure for his family and children while in the Army. Thomas evidently received a fairly good education for those days, and with the early deaths of his three older brothers, must have assisted his father in many ways with the several pieces of property which father Benjamin purchased, possibly then cleared of rocks and timber, or worked a short period, then sold as farm lots. Thomas also apparently received training, or perhaps served an apprenticeship, learning the trade of a shoemaker, for his service record in the French-Indian War of 1754-56 shows: "Thomas Grover, of Grafton: In Capt. Ebenezer Learned's Co., of Col. Timothy Ruggles' Reg't, roll dated - Camp at Lake George, September 9, 1756, Sentinel; age 18, occupation: cordswainer; born in Grafton; residence: Worcester; joined as a volunteer from Capt. Goodale's Co. of the same Reg't; reported sick, October 12, 1756; rank: private." 18

More About THOMAS GROVER: Fact 1: Served in the French-Indian War of 1754-56. Notes for SARAH SHERMAN: Sarah was a daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Perham) Sherman. Her family line is of considerable interest, being of record in England back to about 1400-1425, and her grandfather (Capt.) John Sherman, in 1726-27 had served as one of the leaders who negotiated with the Indians, in behalf of 40 English settler families, for the purchase of 7,500 acres of land for a price of 2,500 Pounds, in the "Hassanamisco" Indian Plantation. This large tract was just east and northeast of Grafton, and west of Marlborough, Mass., and adjoined the "Quansigamond" Plantation, which lay to the west and later included the town of Worcester. Shrewsbury, where Sarah was from, was at the approximate center of this large tract which John Sherman and his companions had purchased from the Indians just a short distance northeast of Grafton. Child of THOMAS GROVER and SARAH SHERMAN is: 47.

34. EBENEZER8 GROVER (BENJAMIN7, THOMAS6, MATHEW5, THOMAS4, LAZARUS3, STEPHEN2, THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1747 in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts, and died November 22, 1803 in Montague, Massachusetts. He married ELIZABETH STOW June 13, 1767 in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts. She was born 1745 in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts, and died March 14, 1831 in Montague, Massachusetts. Notes for EBENEZER GROVER: Notice of Intent to Wed shows him as "Ebenezer, minor son of Benjamin Grover of Grafton", thus proving his parentage and ancestry. Intent to Wed was posted January 1767. "Notice was removed by Miss Stow". A second Intent to Wed was posted June 13, 1767. Note that Ebenezer first posted the marriage banns at Grafton in January 1767, but "notice was removed by Miss Stow." He again posted the Notice of Intent, on June 13, 1767, at which time they were married. Ebenezer, with his brothers, was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He was a "cordwainer" or shoemaker by trade. His will, dated November 30, 1802, on file in the Hampshire County records at Northampton, Mass., shows he left his estate to wife Elizabeth and his several children and grandchildren, whom he listed by names. Ebenezer Grover of Montague was a resident and taxpayer there, of record for many years, and is listed in the First U.S. Census, of 1790, for Montague, Mass.; his will is on file at Northampton, Mass., the county seat. From all available records Ebenezer appears to have been a hard-working, thrifty and rather religious man, a shoemaker by trade, and of sufficient business ability to raise a fine family of ten loving children, and also to accumulate a small estate of properties at the time of his death, November 22, 1803, at 56 years of age. 39. BENJAMIN9 GROVER (ANDREW8, BENJAMIN7, ANDREW6, THOMAS5, THOMAS4, LAZARUS3, STEPHEN2, THOMAS1) was born March 30, 1760 in Georgetown, Maine, and died June 06, 1833 in Woolwich, Maine. He married (1) LYDIA LANCASTER July 27, 1786, daughter of JOSEPH LANKESTER and HANNAH BUBIER. She was born November 27, 1762 in Woolwich, Sagadahoc, Maine, and died July 31, 1789 in Woolwich, Sagadahoc, Maine. He married (2) JOANNA TROTT August 21, 1790, daughter of LEMUEL TROTT and MARTHA MOTHERWELL. She was born October 20, 1769 in Woolwich, Maine, and died January 26, 1853 in Woolwich, Maine. Notes for BENJAMIN GROVER: Benjamin built and owned "Grover's Tavern", which was situated on the old road between Bath and Wiscasset. The history of Wiscasset states; "This old hostelry was built between the years 1768 and 1789. It stood almost on the line that was the boundary between the townships of Wiscasset and Woolwich, and was in the latter town." The old Grovers Tavern burned on Labor Day evening in 1938. The history of Wiscasset goes on to tell of a favorite drink of the travelers who stopped at Grover's Tavern. It was a mixture of beer, rum, and brown sugar, heated by plunging a hot ale mull into a 2 / 3 full pewter mug.

Notes for LYDIA LANCASTER: Old Woolwich records cite January 8, 1760 as the first town meeting with, "Jos. Lankester, surveyor," present. This man was probably Lydia's father. Other Woolwich records cite intentions to wed: "Benjamin Grover and Lydia Lankester, 1786." July 3, a second notation reads: " Benjamin Grover of Georgetown and Joanna Trott, 1790, August 14." These records hint of the tragedy which struck Benjamin's first marriage. Lydia drown July 31, 1789, only three years after her marriage to youthful Benjamin. Their two year old son, John, was also drowned. The story that is related was their home was located on the edge of Nequasset Pond. Lydia, at home alone, feared an Indian attack and attempted to row a canoe across the pond to escape. The canoe capsized and both Lydia and little John were drowned. Her grave can be found in the burial ground of Nequasset Meeting House and Church, which was built in 1757, and stands on the hill above the pond. Child of BENJAMIN GROVER and LYDIA LANCASTER is: i.

53. JAMES10 GROVER (BENJAMIN9, ANDREW8, BENJAMIN7, ANDREW6, THOMAS5, THOMAS4, LAZARUS3, STEPHEN2, THOMAS1) was born January 25, 1798 in Woolwich, Maine, and died April 13, 1873 in Woolwich, Maine. He married MARTHA DILNOE CUSHMAN March 19, 1826 in Woolwich, Maine. She was born April 13, 1806 in Woolwich, Maine, and died in Woolwich, Maine. Notes for JAMES GROVER: "Grover's Tavern James Grover was the fifth child of Benjamin and Joanna (Trott) Grover. He was born at "Grover's Tavern", Woolwich, Maine, January 25, 1798. Living across the road and within sight of "Grover's Tavern", was the Robert Cushman family. The Cushman's had come from Kingston, Massachusetts in 1781. Robert Cushman was descended from Robert Cushman of Canterbury, England, who was the agent for the "Mayflower" pilgrims of 1620. Robert Cushman of Woolwich, Maine was the fourth Robert Cushman of his line. On March 13, 1826, James Grover married the daughter of Francis Cushman, youngest son of Robert Cushman, (4th). Her name was, Miss Martha 'Dilnoe' Cushman. Her middle name was the corrupted spelling of the family name we know today as, "Delano". The most illustrious descendent of that name was our U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Actually, 'Delano' is also a corruption of the name, for the first person to carry the name to America, was a young French Huguenot, Philip de La Noye, whose parents fled France to Leyden, Holland. He came with some remaining Separatists to America in 1621, aboard the ship "Fortune". Benjamin Grover, father of James Grover, built and owned Grover's Tavern, which was situated on the old road between Bath and Wiscasset. The history of Wiscasset states; "This old hostelry was built between the years 1768 and 1789. It stood almost on the line that was the boundary between the townships of Wiscasset and Woolwich, and was in the latter town." "Grover's Tavern" became most known because of the nine "Esquimaux" who drifted on an ice floe from the North Pole for six months. They lived at Grover's Tavern after their rescue, because the heat of Washington D.C. was too much for them to bear. By preference, they lived in the cellar of the Tavern. In 1860-1862, Captain Charles Franklin Hall determined to go north to attempt to find the "lost expedition", (1845), of Sir John Franklin, who discovered the Northwest Passage, but perished in the Arctic. Captain Hall started his journey July 1871, in the ship "Polaris", but died November 8, 1871. Captain Tyson assumed command, but in the drifting ice and darkness the "Polaris" slipped her cables and was carried away with 14 men. Nineteen persons, including nine Eskimos, drifted southward with only one month's food supply. One of the Eskimos, "Little Joe", hunted constantly for seals, which provided meat, plus oil for warmth and to melt ice for drinking water. The ice floe was only four to five miles in circumference and about twenty-five feet thick. They drifted from 77o31/2' N. to 53o 35', nearly 2,000 miles, before their rescue on April 30, 1873. A sealing ship named "Tigress" found them off the coast of Labrador with only seal skins to eat. They arrived at Washington D.C., June 5, 1873, but the summer heat made them ill, so it was decided they stay in the cooler climate at Grover's Tavern, Woolwich, Maine. The history of Wiscasset goes on to tell of a favorite drink of the travelers who stopped by Grover's Tavern. It was a mixture of beer, rum, and brown sugar, heated by plunging a hot ale mug into a 2/3 full pewter mug. Grover's Tavern burned on Labor Day evening, 1938.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ James and Martha (Cushman) Grover built a home on Birch Point, near the village of Wiscasset. This house can still be visited, and is occupied by Richard Tucker Grover (3rd), James and Martha (Cushman) Grover's greatgrandson.
He married EVELYN MAE (PHILLIPS) HOLLOWAY March 36
19, 1938 in Michigan City, IN, daughter of CHARLES PHILLIPS and HAZEL COOPER. She was born March 01, 1920 in Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, MI, and died March 18, 1996 in Holt, MI. Notes for VICTOR ETHAN GROVER: Victor and Evelyn eloped, going from Lansing, Michigan, to Michigan City, Indiana, where they were married. Their attendants were Walomar Schmidt, Evelyn's foster brother, and his wife, Francis. Victor died on November 25, 1995, at the age of 87, following a 3-year illness. Cause of death is listed as "respiratory arrest, caused by aspiration, brought about by ??? vascular ???". He had lived at the Integrated Health Services, a nursing home, for the 2 years prior to his death. According to his wishes, Victor's body was cremated. Then his wife and children took the ashes to the Camp Alexander Boy Scout Camp and scattered them on the grounds of the camp. Vic had been involved in Boy Scouting for over 50 years, and had been employed at Camp Alexander for several years before his retirement. Following his death, the Boy Scout Council started a Victor Grover Scholarship to pay camping fees for deserving scouts. Notes for EVELYN MAE (PHILLIPS) HOLLOWAY: Evelyn was born to Charles and Hazel Violia Cooper. When Evelyn was 10 months old, her mother died of Tuberculosis. Evelyn then went to live with her father's sister, Aunt Grace (Phillips) Leyrer. However, Aunt Grace also had a daughter, Willa, of the same age, and both children were sick. Because she was overwhelmed with caring for two sick toddlers, Grace agreed (as did Evelyn's father) to let their friends, Clara and Elmer Holloway, take Evelyn to care for. Apparently the arrangement was good for everyone, because Elmer and Clara eventually adopted Evelyn. Evelyn did not know she was adopted until she was 16 years old, when some schoolmates started teasing her about it. Of course, she ran home and Grandma Holloway had to explain the situation to her. She was told that the family friend, Uncle Charles was actually her father. Evelyn remained close to her biological family, especially Aunt Grace and Uncle Ken (Charles' younger brother), until their deaths. Evelyn died March 18, 1996, of metastasized colon cancer. According to Evelyn's wishes, her body was cremated. Children of VICTOR GROVER and EVELYN HOLLOWAY are: 91. 92. 93. 94. 95. 96.
