LIDDELL, of Ravensworth Castle, Durham. Created Baronet Nov. 2, 164-2. THE Liddells were anciently lords of Liddell Castle,* and barony of Buff; and have been proprietors of considerable coal works in the counties of Durham and Northumberland. The first we find is 1 .Thomas de Liddell.f who married Margaret, daughter of John de Laburne, by whom he had issue two sons, Thomas and George, who married Eleanor, daughter of John Burn, and had one son, George, who married , daughter of Robert Barker, Esq. and died without issue. 2. Thomas, the eldest son, married Barbara, daughter and coheiress of Richard Strangeways, by whom he had four sons and two daughters; 1, Francis ; 2, Thomas; 3, Robert; and 4, Percival, who both died S.P. Francis, the eldest son married Anne, daughter of William de'Segrave ; but his line terminated in his son and heir, Bartrum, who married Barbara, -daughter of Thomas Cramlington, and died without issue. 3. Thomas Liddell, Esq. (second' son of Thomas) -continued the line:* he purchased the manors of Ravensworth, Lamesly, and Eighton, of Sir William Gasc6igrie, in lb'07. He married first Margaret, daughter of John Watson, Esq. by whom he had Thomas, his son and heir, and three daughters; Elizabeth, the wife of William Sherwood, of Middlesex ; Alice, of Gawen Salkeld; and Eleanor, of Timothy Draper, of Newcastle, in Northumberland, Gent. His second wife was Jane, daughter of Henry Midford, Esq. by whom he had 1, Henry, who married Elizabeth, daughter of William Jennison, Esq. by whom he had a son Thomas, his heir; 2, Roger, who married Grace, daughter of James Clavering, Esq. 3, Barbara, the wife of Samuel Sanderson, Gent, they all had issue ; and 4, Jane, of Robert Anderson, Esq.f he died in 1615, and was succeeded by his eldest son, I. THOMAS LIDDELL, Esq. who was much esteemed, and had great interest in the county of Northumberland, which he exerted in support of King Charles I. defending Newcastle against the Scots; and his majesty, as a mark of his favour, conferred on him the dignity of a baronet, by letters patent, bearing date Nov. 2, 1642. ' In the time of the rebellion he was taken prisoner, as Whitlock relates; and that on Feb. 13, 1645, upon a petition of Sir Thomas Liddell, a prisoner, he' was admitted to compound: it appears, that he paid 4000/.J to the sequestrators for his estate. He was also so obnoxious to the then powers, that Sir Thomas Liddell, senior, is mentioned among those, in the propositions from the parliament, who were demanded to be removed from his majesty's councils, and to be restrained from coming within the verge of the court; and not, without advice or consent of both houses of parliament, to bear any office or employment. He survived those troublesome times, departing this life in 1650, and having married Isabel, daughter of Henry" Anderson, Esq. (by a daughter and co-heir of Morland) by whom he had six sons, and three daughters, viz. 1, Sir Thomas Liddell, Knt. who died in 1627, leaving issue by Bridget (who was maid of honour to the Queen of Bohemia) daughter of Edward Woodward, of Lee, near Windsor, Esq. one son, Sir Thomas, hereafter-mentioned (she afterwards was the wife of Thomas Heneage, of' Battersea, in Surrey, Esq. nephew of Sir Thomas Heneage, Bart.) 2, Francis,§ married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir George Tonge, of Denton, in Durham, Knt. 3, William ; 4, Robert; 5, George ; and 6, Henry, who all died unmarried. Sir THOMAS LIDDELL, Bart, (only son of Sir Thomas, Knt.) succeeded his grandfather in dignity and estate, in 1650: he was knighted by King Charles I. and lived to be very aged, departing this life in 1697, having issue, by Anne, daughter of Sir Henry Vane, the elder, of Raby Castle, in Durham, Knt. five sons and three daughters; 1, Sir Henry, his successor; 2, Thomas, who died unmarried; 3, Edward, who died young; 4, Robert, who married Priscilla, daughter of William Kiffin, of London, merchant, who died March 15, 1679, aged 24, and is buried at Bunhill Fields: by her he had issue Thomas, who died May 14, 1718; and by Mary, daughter of Nclthorpe, had issue Henry Liddell, Esq. his only son and heir, and one daughter: 5, George, who died a batchelor. The daughters were 1, Frances, the wife of Thomas Vane, of Raby Castle, in Durham, Esq. elder brother of the late Lord Barnard, and afterwards of Sir John Bright, Bart. 2, Elizabeth, of Christopher Stockdale, of Bilton Park, in the county of York, Esq. and had issue ; and 3, Isabel, who died unmarried. III. Sir HENRY LIDDELL, Bart, eldest son and successor to his father, married Catharine, daughter and heiress of Sir John Bright, of Carbrook, in Derbyshire, and Badsworth, in Yorkshire, Bart, (by Catharine his wife, daughter of Sir Richard Hawksworth, of Hawksworth, Knt. and relict of William Lister, of Thornton, Knt.) by whom he bad issue five sons and one daughter; 1, Thomas ; 2, John ; 3, Henry; 4, George ; and 5, Michael; and one daughter, Elizabeth. Thomas, the first son, married Jane, eldest daughter of James Clavering, of Greencroft, in the county Palatine of Durham, Esq. and died in the life-time of his father, 1715. He had issue four sons; 1, Henry, afterwards Lord Ravensworth ; 2, James, died at the age of 14 years; 3, Thomas, died an infant; Catharine died at the age of 12 years; and Thomas, the fourth son, who married Margaret, daughter of Sir William Bowes, of Gibsidc. Descendants of Thomas de Liddell Generation 1 (con't) an infant, very young, and one daughter, Anne, the wife of Lord Euston, now duke of Grafton.* He was created a peer, in the year 1747, by the name and title of Henry, Baron of Ravensworth, and died at Ravensworth Castle, in the county of Durham, Jan. 30, 1784. Thomas Liddell, Esq. his lordship's brother, died in his lordship's life-time: he married Margaret, one of the daughters of Sir William Bowes, of Gibside, Knt. by whom he had two sons; Thomas, who died an infant, and Henry-George, who succeeded his uncle, Lord Ravensworth, in dignity of baronet and estate, in 1784.
