Please join us for the

President’s

Holiday Luncheon and make a difference for a family in need!

11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4 Belleville Campus Café

Thanksgiving reminds us the holiday season is in full swing, and indeed, as an institution, we have much for which to give thanks. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank you for your many contributions to our students and community. This is also the time of year we plan our holiday luncheon. I hope you will take time to join me at this special holiday event, which is Wednesday, Dec. 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Belleville Campus Café. View your invitation. I look forward to seeing you at the luncheon.

Georgia Costello, Ph.D. President

DECADES OF DEDICATION Brighten up the holidays for children in need with a contribution to ARAMARK’s annual Toy Drive for the Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois.

Donations of new, unwrapped toys will be collected at the luncheon and throughout the day on Dec. 4.

Please pay it forward this hol

iday season!

Luncheon sponsored by SWIC Board of Trustees and ARAMARK.

DENNIS MCKAY began his career at then Belleville Area College as a student worker in the Audio Visual department. After graduating from BAC in 1972, he took a part-time job with SWIC. “In 1974, I applied for the full-time position I still hold,” said McKay, the lead technician of Communications and Distance Learning. He has kept the college’s classroom and videoconferencing equipment in working order, set up sound systems for all types of college events, captured important college milestones on video and duplicated countless CDs, DVDs and other media for four decades. “My enjoyment in working at SWIC has always been the wonderful people that I work with. There are so many people who have made my time here enjoyable … too many to try to mention,” he said. McKay has been with the college through seven leadership changes, a number of building additions and tremendous growth of disciplines offered by the college. “We offer a rock solid good product and it is the people here who make that happen. I am proud to play a small part in the operation of the college.”

MARDY EISLOEFFEL also moved from

student ranks to part-time employee. In 1974, he began teaching English 101 and 102 part time. After a brief hiatus in the 1980s, he rejoined the college to teach rhetoric and composition and developmental reading. He would move on to teach those classes full time as an assistant, and later associate, professor of reading before retiring in May 2011. He now tutors students in the Success Center. Though he took classes at various locations as the college grew, when he returned to teach, the college was located on its current Belleville site. “I have many, many fond memories of people and events,” he noted of his 35 years of service. One standout memory is of a student who approached him in a grocery store parking lot a decade after having taken his class to share with him that he’d changed her life. She relayed that he inspired for her a love of reading and led her to a college degree and a good job. “It’s moments – and memories – like that which have kept me going,” he noted. The people here – faculty, staff and students – are the reason I keep coming back. It is exciting to me to think that I may be helping a future Albert Schweitzer, Jonas Salk or John Steinbeck!”

LARRY PETRI’s start at then Belleville Area College was in intramural sports. He also served as a part-time physical education instructor and as assistant soccer coach. When the head coach left in 1981, he took over, becoming the head coach of the men’s soccer team in 1982.

As head coach, Petri has compiled more than 300 wins, was elected to the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 2010 and has earned numerous All-Region 24 Coach of the Year honors. “It’s [working at the college] been a perfect fit for me,” he said. He’s been able to stay connected to the sport and he’s proud of the fact that his student-athletes get a good education. He looks back fondly on his ’99 season and the bond formed by the members of the team as one of his most memorable times here. The team competed in the national tournament that year. He also points to some father-son connections to the program. “It’s nice to know that some guys who played for you thought enough of the program and the education they received to send their sons here,” he said. See the insert at the end of Insider Chat for a list of employees who reached milestone years of service in 2012 and 2013.

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT One of the best gifts any of us can receive is inspiration, so here are a few recent SWIC-cess stories to inspire us all.

1-12 Exhibition: John M. Goessmann,

A FRESH START

2-15 25 percent off fleece tops

When Imad Yousif, Ph.D., and his family were forced to leave a prosperous life in Iraq, they found a new beginning in the Metro East. After signing up for Adult Basic Education English as a Second Language classes, Dr. Yousif went on to teach French and Arabic for Community Education. That led to teaching credit courses in earth science and astronomy, and today, he serves as an adjunct physical sciences instructor. The News-Democrat recently featured Dr. Yousif and his family in its Sunday Magazine. Read his story online.

ONE STEP AT A TIME Recent SWIC graduate Eva Roeder first obtained her GED here in 2007, then went on to earn her associate degree in 2011 using her Top 10 Percent scholarship. Since then, she’s been taking classes at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in the Criminology and Criminal Justice master’s program. She recently shared that she plans to apply for UMSL’s Ph.D. program in the spring.

FROM ST. LOUIS TO NEW ORLEANS Students from all SWIC campuses and Belleville AmeriCorps gathered on Chouteau Island near Granite City for a river clean-up day with the Living Lands and Waters organization. Their efforts resulted in filling a 30-foot-long boat with 1,500 cubic feet of trash, tires and tarps. Phi Theta Kappa Red Bud Campus chapter students will take a spring break trip to New Orleans to rebuild homes destroyed in Hurricane Katrina.

MILITARY SALUTES Among the most inspirational students we serve are veterans and active military personnel. So much so, the entire college dug even deeper this year to ensure our military-student service was second to none. Mission accomplished considering the college was recognized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as a VetSuccess on Campus institution, one of only 94 designated colleges nationwide. SWIC also earned the Governor’s Award for Excellence for military service; and Military Friendly School® status from Victory Media, which serves military personnel nationwide. Also, for the second consecutive year, the SWIC National Test Center at Scott Air Force Base was recognized by the College Board for being among the top 13 percent of military test centers nationally for administering College Level Examination Program tests. Truly, the unselfish sacrifices of our service women and men have inspired us to reach new service heights. Hooah!

LIFELONG LEARNING PSOP was recently featured in the Belleville News-Democrat for serving more than 200 seniors at its Bountiful Harvest Thanksgiving meal; PSOP also received coverage from Broadband Illinois about its SeniorLink computer club. Earlier this fall, the News-Democrat ran a photo essay about all the programs and events PSOP offers. A photographer followed the group for months to capture the impact of the center. Here is a link to just some of that media coverage, which helps remind area seniors you’re never too old to get involved.

BEA FRIES LIBRARY Friends and colleagues of longtime BC Librarian Bea Fries knew of her unwavering passion for books and helping students learn. With her passing in 2012, Bea left SWIC the largest single one-time gift in college history. At the SWIC Foundation’s recent Thanks For Giving reception for donors, we were pleased to announce the BC Library will be forever named for its most beloved caretaker. Happy Holidays,

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Black Affairs Council President Jamele Johnson heard about the work of fellow student Katie Schmierbach to help homeless individuals and the organization launched into action to host a fundraiser. Schmierbach purchases items and then assembles and distributes care pouches, containing personal care, nonperishable food and other items, to homeless individuals. The organization raised more than $130 to aid the cause. Pictured from left are Johnson, Disability Access & Center Intake Coordinator Dale Zink and Schmierbach with one of her care kits.

Nursing Education students, from left, Jamie Cox of Caseyville, Sayrah Martin of Belleville, Jamie’s daughter, Kalia, and Maryann Abalos of O’Fallon load boxes of food to help make Thanksgiving special for local needy families. All 163 students in the Nursing Education program collected food throughout the month of November. Turkeys were donated by faculty, and each class collected food from different categories to make sure the meals are well balanced. Donations of more than $500 helped purchase additional items discounted by Schnucks and Walmart. The Student Nurse Association delivered the meals Tuesday and Wednesday to 36 families in the college district, plus Alton and St. Louis. The SNA members selected families they knew needed the support.

The Student Veterans of America club collected gently used coats and new blankets to benefit homeless veterans in the Metro East. Loading the donations for delivery are, from left, Director of College Activities and Veterans Services David Paeth; SVA members Jason Epps of Swansea and Zack Baglia of Shiloh; SVA President Amber Manion of Granite City; and VetSuccess on Campus Veterans Affairs Counselor Armando De La Garza of St. Louis. The group collected more than 400 items during the drive.

The College Activities Board at the Red Bud Campus recently won the Michael Nejman Excellence in Programming Award given by the Illinois Community College Student Activities Association. The group was recognized for its outstanding work on its Sweet Week service project. Receiving the award at the fall conference are CAB students, from left, Audrey Mueth and Jilliane Ostlund, both of Red Bud; Emilee Mattingly of Chester; Megan Wodochek and Lauren Asselmeier, both of Waterloo; Brooke Cates of Steeleville; Tiffany Valleroy of Evansville and Chelsea Rabbermann of Red Bud.
