Keep in Our Prayers

Please pray for members of our community who are sick or in need or our prayerful support.

 Mrs

Craig and her family on the recent passing of her grandmother.

Goodbye Father Garner Father Garner has been recently appointed by Archbishop Costelloe to assist at the Bateman Parish in Perth and will be leaving our school community at the end of the month. This is devastating news for our school, with our loss being Bateman’s gain. We thank Father Garner for his religious and pastoral leadership; he will be sorely missed by the staff and students alike. We look forward to farewelling Father Garner as a community. Quiz Night Our quiz night is fast approaching and I encourage you to see Mrs Miller in the office to secure your table, if you have not done so already. This is sure to be a fun filled evening, including raffles, fun games and a cash prize for the winning table. This event will be held at the WASM Graduate’s Hall on Saturday 25th June. Tickets are selling fast, with tables of eight available for $80. The theme for the evening is ‘nerdy’, so I encourage you to embrace your ‘inner nerd’ and come dressed up on the evening. iPad Parent & Student Workshop Parents and students from all year groups are encouraged to attend our first iPad Parent & Student Workshop for 2016 this Wednesday from 3.30-4.30pm. All of our teachers integrate iPads into the classroom as a creative learning tool on a daily basis. This workshop presents a wonderful opportunity for you to learn more about using your iPad for learning, alongside your child/children. I look forward to seeing you there. A Plea for Help! Miss Arnold, Mrs Moore and a band of merry parent helpers have been working very hard over the last few months covering and accessioning over one thousand books and resources damaged in the fire. Thanks to this amazing effort we now have only two boxes of books left to cover! If you are able to assist please see Mrs Miller.

Beautification Community Event on 27 July We have had a fantastic response to our request for the donation of fruit trees to use as part of our sustainable garden practices around the school. We are still seeking donations of Washington Naval Orange trees and both Imperial and Emperor Mandarins trees. The Beautification Committee will be meeting again with Mrs Eckert from the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Urban Landcare Group to assist with our new beautiful native garden landscape design for the front of our school. The project will culminate in a community planting day on Wednesday 27 July from 9.30am -12pm. Please mark this date in your diary. NIETA Teacher Awards We are blessed to have teachers of a high quality at St Joseph’s who make a positive and measurable difference in each of our student’s lives. For over 20 years now, the National Excellence in Teaching Awards have given communities the opportunity to formally thank their hard-working and inspirational educators and leaders. Should you wish to nominate one of our staff for the awards, you can do so at http://www.asg.com.au/neita. All nominations for the 2016 ASG National Excellence in Teaching Awards must be received by 5pm (AEST) on 31 July 2016. Upcoming Events for your Diary        

CURRICULUM NEWS REPORTING – YEARS ONE – SIX Students from Years One to Six will be designated a letter from A – E to indicate their progress. It is important to remember that the grade will reflect the level of achievement that is expected for that year level for that point in time. The A – E grade scale summarises the standard of achievement associated with each learning area. The table below provides an explanation of the achievement descriptor for each letter grade. Letter Grade A Excellent B High C

Satisfactory

D Limited E Very Low

Achievement Descriptor The student demonstrates excellent achievement of what is expected for this year level. The student demonstrates high achievement of what is expected for this year level. The student demonstrates satisfactory achievement of what is expected for this year level. The student demonstrates limited achievement of what is expected for this year level. The student demonstrates very low achievement of what is expected for this year level

It is important to note that the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) reporting policy indicates that the allocation of a grade for an individual student should describe the level of achievement that is expected for their year level at that point in time. Students do not need to be working ‘above their year level’ to achieve an ‘A’ grade. All schools in WA are bound by this SCSA policy. REPORTING – PRE PRIMARY Students in Pre Primary receive a description of their achievement in Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Science, Health and Visual Arts. The table below provides an explanation of the achievement descriptions. Pre Primary Achievement Descriptors The student demonstrates exceptional achievement given the expectations for this year level. The student has exceeded the achievement expected for this year level. The student demonstrated the expected achievement for this year level. The student is working towards the achievement for this year. The student has not yet demonstrated the expected achievement for this year level.

The descriptors summarise the standard of achievement in each of the reported learning areas. The scale describes the depth of knowledge, understandings and skills that children working at that standard typically show. If your child receives an “expected”, they are achieving at the required level for their year. Maintaining a level in a learning area from one semester to the next is an indication of positive achievement and expected development. Luke Shaw - Assistant Principal Curriculum

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION EUCHARISTIC RETREAT Last Thursday the students in Year Four attended a Eucharistic Retreat at All Hallows. I would like to thank the Year Four students for their participation, Father Garner and Miss Britt for their assistance in running the activities and the parents who supplied us with bountiful food. Father Garner took time out after Mass to explain the names of all the items used during Mass and their purpose in the Mass. I hope this leads to a greater understanding of the Mass for these students. We also spent time on deepening our understanding of the Eucharist and in that remembering Christ who gave his life for us. EDUCATION IN FAITH

SCHOOL NURSE

Life is filled with highs and lows, and as the saying goes... "without the lows we wouldn't be able to appreciate the highs”. As I look back over the last few weeks, the importance of friends and family has been highlighted to me.

5 Steps to Staying Healthy in Winter

One of my recent highs was that my family gathered together to celebrate my daughters First Holy Communion. We were all very proud to watch as she made her own commitment to God.

Boost your diet Eating foods that are high in vitamin C will help keep your immune system strong, so include fruit and vegies such as lemons, kiwifruit, capsicum and broccoli in your weekly shop.

Last week was the biggest low of my life so far as my beautiful Nana passed away. I feel so blessed that my family have received so much love and support. We are so lucky to have been surrounded by many wonderful friends and family members. Please take time this week to tell your friends and family how much you appreciate and cherish them.

Exercise regularly It's vital to keep your workout regimen up during winter, with a recent study showing that a moderate level of regular exercise has a long-term cumulative effect on immune response.

My Nanas favourite song was Hail Mary, Gentle Woman. I thought I would share the chorus with you all, as this weeks prayer. Gentle woman, quiet light, Morning star, so strong and bright, Gentle mother, peaceful dove, Teach us wisdom, teach us love. Amen Mrs Kiona Craig Year Five Teacher

JUMP JUMPROPE ROPEFOR FORHEART HEART Hi Kids! How are your skipping tricks going? Can you do double-unders and criss-cross yet? It’s not long until your Jump Off day, so keep practising. Have you got any sponsors yet? Why not get Mum and Dad to help you use the computer to get online sponsors. It’s easy and it’s fun!! Log on to: jumprope.org.au and follow the directions!

Stay connected Socialising helps strengthen your immune system by keeping you active and reducing your stress levels, so avoid the temptation to rug up on the couch all winter. Scrub up Frequent hand washing is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and spreading illness as it limits the transfer of bacteria, viruses and other microbes. This is important during winter when we tend to cough and sneeze more frequently. Wet your hands and lather up with soap for 20 seconds to help dislodge germs and rinse well under running water. Sleep well Lack of sleep can have a serious effect on your immune system, making you more vulnerable to catching colds. Create a relaxing bedtime routine, such as listening to soft music or soaking in a warm bath. Avoid watching TV or using your computer just before bedtime and turn the lights down low an hour before you turn in for the night, as it will boost the release of melatonin in the brain. Also try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even on weekends. *The annual flu vaccine is also a great way to prevent some strains of influenza. See your GP or contact Population health to discuss receiving the flu vaccine and minimising your chances of getting sick this winter.

YEAR ONE NEWS

PRE-PRIMARY NEWS

YOU CAN DO IT NEWS! You Can Do It! In Kindy to Year Two Here is some of the wonderful work the students have been doing in Kindy - Year 2. They have been exploring the keys of Confidence and Resilience.

Planting the SEEDS of creativity and mastery... Our SEEDS students have a busy couple of weeks coming up and would love to share some of what they have been up to with the St Joseph’s community. Mathematics Trust of Australia Challenge Series Three of our clever Year Six students have embarked on the Mathematics Trust of Australia Challenge Series and will be at St Mary’s Primary School every Thursday over the next few weeks. They will be working on some challenging and thought-provoking maths tasks with their St Mary’s peers and will have their work put up against other amazing Mathematicians in their year group across the nation. We wish Samara, Jordan and Zachary all the best with their tasks!

Art Vs Science The Year Four SEEDS students will also be visiting St Mary’s this Tuesday to take part in the Art Vs Science project. This project will conclude with the student’s work being displayed at the Boulder Markets THIS SUNDAY 19TH JUNE. We would love for everyone to make it down to the markets to view the student’s work, which has been a collaborative initiative with St Mary’s IMAGINeers, extension students from Kalgoorlie Boulder Community High School and PEAC students.

You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you
