Easter Sunday

Welcome to Peace! Thank you for being with us today to celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord. We left church on Friday in silence, contemplating the death of Jesus in our place and for our sins. Just as the earthquake broke the silence early on that first Easter morning, our voices are raised to sing thanks and praise to our resurrected Lord. “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”1 Christ is risen. He is risen indeed! If you are a guest or visitor with us this morning, we are glad that you are here and we hope you will join us again soon. The ushers are available to help if you need assistance. Today, April 5th: 6:30 AM 7:30 AM 9:00 AM 10:00 AM

1 Corinthians 15:55 2

Before Worship As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer:

Prayer of the Day O God, you made the dawn of this most holy day shine with the glory of our Lord’s resurrection. Grant that we who have been raised from the death of sin by your lifegiving Spirit may worship you in sincerity and truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

For the Children A Cry-Room is available if your little ones need a moment. It is the first room on the left as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped to the room to let you hear and see the service.

Facilities Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side.

Easter Sunrise Service P:

Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: “The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.”

P: C: P: C:

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed. 2 Christ is risen! He is risen indeed.

C:

In the name of the Father, who created us, And of the Son, who died for us, And of the Holy Spirit, who makes us holy. Amen. Let us confess our sins, knowing that our risen Savior has defeated death and won the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. O Lord, as we leave the darkness of night we are reminded of our sins. Too often our thoughts, words, and actions are full of darkness and disobedience. Because of them, we deserve only eternal darkness and death. But as we enter the light of day, we are reminded of your love for us, which caused you to bear the darkness of the cross and rise to life at the dawn of the first Easter, so that we might be forgiven. We come to you, our dear Light, and plead for mercy. Lift up your hearts! Our Lord Jesus has paid for all your sins by His innocent suffering and death. His triumphant resurrection proves that God the Father has accepted His perfect life and death on our behalf. Our resurrected Lord said, “If you forgive anyone His sins, they are forgiven.”3 Therefore, as a called servant of the living Christ and by His authority, I forgive your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn: #341:1,3, “Awake, My Heart, with Gladness” This is known as the paschal greeting. For centuries, Christians have used this greeting during the 50 days of Easter. When the Pastor says, in the service or sermon, “Christ is risen”, the congregation responds, “He is risen indeed!” Please follow this tradition during the service this morning. 3 John 20:23 2

Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 12:1-6 1

In that day you will say: "I will praise you, O LORD. Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you have comforted me. 2 Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation." 3 With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. 4 In that day you will say: "Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted. 5 Sing to the LORD, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world. 6 Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you."

Psalm: Psalm 30 (read responsively) P: C:

I will exalt you, O Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me. O LORD my God, I called to you for help and you healed me. O LORD, you brought me up from the grave; you spared me from going down into the pit.

P: C:

Sing to the LORD, you saints of his; praise his holy name. For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

P:

When I felt secure, I said, "I will never be shaken." O LORD, when you favored me, you made my mountain stand firm; but when you hid your face, I was dismayed. To you, O LORD, I called; to the Lord I cried for mercy.

C: P: C:

"What gain is there in my destruction, in my going down into the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your faithfulness? Hear, O LORD, and be merciful to me; O LORD, be my help." You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing to you and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever. 4

Epistle Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:51-57 51

Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." 55 "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 52

Hymn: 353:1,4,5 “Jesus Lives! The Victory’s Won” Gospel Reading: John 20:1-18 1

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" 3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. 8Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes, 11but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. 13 They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" "They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put him." 14At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. 15 "Woman," he said, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him." 16 Jesus said to her, "Mary." 5

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" 18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her.

Hymn: #357, “The Strife Is O’er, the Battle Done” Exordium4 Exordium Hymn: #348 “He Is Arisen! Glorious Word!” Sermon Text: 1 Corinthians 15:12-22 12

But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. 20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

Sermon Theme: Dead. Buried. Risen. We Bring Our Offerings The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord’s work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry.

Exordium is an “introduction” for the festival day. This is a tradition of Norwegian Lutherans that dates to the 16th century. After the Exordium, the congregation rises to sing the festival hymn. 6

The Prayer of the Church P:

O Lord God, our strength, our song, and our salvation, you fulfilled your promises by the resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ, from the dead. C: Thanks be to God! You give us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. P: In your compassion you sent Christ, the Good Shepherd, who laid down his life to rescue the lost. C: Drive out all doubt and gloom that we may delight in your glorious triumph. P: Lift our eyes heavenward to see him who lives to make intercession for the saints, and grant us confidence in the greatness of his power. Keep before us the vision of your redeemed people standing before your throne and singing the song of victory: C: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive wisdom and power and honor and glory and praise. P: Make us instruments of your peace as we bring the good news of hope and new life to those around us. Guide us in the use of all that you have entrusted to us: our time, our talents, and our treasures. C: Risen Lord, live in us that we may live for you. P: Merciful Lord Jesus, grant healing to the sick, and strengthen the faith of the suffering and the dying. Assure them of your abiding presence, and comfort them with the hope of eternal life. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. P: Gracious Father, you have restored to us the joy of your salvation. With happy hearts, we come before you and say: C: Alleluia! Thanks be to God! Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. 7

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Hymn: #351:1,3,7,8, “I Know that My Redeemer Lives” The Prayer of the Day P: Let us pray. All: Almighty God, by the glorious resurrection of Your Son You conquered death and opened the gates to eternal life. Strengthen us by our Savior’s victory to put away sin and lead a holy life. We ask this in the name of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. P: Christ is risen! All: He is risen indeed.

Benediction P:

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift us His countenance upon you and give you peace. C: Amen. P: Christ is risen! C: He is risen indeed.
