It can take awhile to get the mail some days. Maybe the mail truck had to wait for more mail to be put inside. It is a pain to wait for the mail to come. On Sundays, the mail remains in the mailbox and stays there until we pick it up on Monday. What a pain it is to wait! The Hay Barn In May, my pal Gail and I go on the subway to a farm. The farm is far off in the hills. We stay in a red barn with hay and grain in it. We jump from bail to bail for the entire day. What fun it is to play in the hay barn in May. Gail and I like to play games with Jay in the hay. Jay is Gail’s dog. He has a short tail. Kay’s Birthday Kay had her fifth birthday last Friday. Kay did not wait for her gift. She got the crayons from inside the gift bag. Her mom let Kay lift the crayons from the bag on Monday. Then mom said, “Wait! Your birthday is not until Friday. The crayons must stay in the gift bag until then.” © Danco Phonics Readers

Unit #24b The Green Weeds The green weeds were not cut in the backyard. Mom said to cut them the next day. The weeds cannot be seen from the street. Mom wants the weeds cut so the seeds will not get into the field near the creek. The field has sweet peas in it. Weeds in a pea field would not be fun to pick. It would take a lot of time to pick the weeds. My Green Tree Have you seen a deep, dark, green tree? I think deep, dark, green trees are the best to sleep under. They seem to keep hot air off of your body. Each one seems to have a sweet smell that helps you get to sleep fast. My tree at home has a swing in it. Each week I spend time under the deep, dark leaves as I sleep in the swing. Life in the Valley Life in the valley is neat! We have three streets that lead to the creek. In the summer, the soccer team meets at the creek to swim. What fun it is to swim in the deep creek. We need to keep sunscreen on. That way we do not get sunburns. The cream feels like a bee sting when it is put on. That’s life in the valley! Hockey Hockey is a fun sport to play. Each team scores when they get the puck in the net. The fans scream for you when you score. The fans like to greet you at the end of the game. Street hockey is fun as well. The key is to play the best you can. You may beat teams that do not play as well as you do. It’s a Scream I like to go to the Fun Park. It is my belief that the Fun Park is the best when you can scream on the rides. Lift your hands on fast rides and scream. Lift your feet and feel the scream come out from deep inside. We need to have brief screams sometimes. Try a bite to eat and then get on a ride. What a mess it could be! © Danco Phonics Readers

Unit #24c Mom’s Pies My mom bakes the best pies in the whole world. She puts a fresh peach in each of her pies. She has to peel each peach by hand. Mom bakes each pie in a deep dish with lots of sweets inside. For whom does mom bake these pies? Mom bakes peach pies just for me. Once she bakes the pie, I must eat it up!

Lies You should not tell lies. Lies are things that you say that are not real. Lies can hurt you and make you feel sad. When you tell a lie it leads to pain. If you tell a lie to a girl, she will not trust what you say or do. If you lie many times, girls will not want to trust you anymore.

The Tie Last year we had a hockey game. I was at the net. Here came the puck! Score! Ducks 2, Rats 3. The game was not a tie game yet. We did well. Then they did better. Next, Matt hit the puck into the net. The puck hit the net fast. He said, “It’s a tie!” At the end of the game the score was 5 to 5. “A tie game it is,” I said.

Unit #24d Coal On the coast, there are many steamboats to see. They float up the coast to the coal mines nearby. Men load up the coal and ship it to the trains. Trains take the coal to truck docks. There, they load the coal onto trucks. Trucks take the loads of coal from the docks to many homes. Men put coal into the fire to burn for heat. My Goal My goal is to soak you when you come close to me. If I get you wet, you will want to soak me as well. You can try to catch me and throw me into the shallow part of the stream. I may tiptoe by you and grab your elbow. If I do, it will take two fellows to make me let you go. Two grown fellows are what it would take. Jay’s Yellow Bus Jay has a yellow bus. Jay is the coach of our sports team. He likes to show us neat things from the bus windows. As we go to games, he shows us oats that grow in the field. He shows us minnows in the shallow creek. What he likes to show us most is dust storms that blow past the windows of his yellow bus. Snow Days Snow days cannot be beat! Does a hot day beat a snow day? No way! On snow days you can use sleds to slide back and forth on the snow. If you do not own a sled, you can borrow a sled from your pal. Or, you can throw snow at your pal on the hill below you. If you need to rest for a short time, you can drink a mug of cocoa. Bill’s Boat Bill’s red boat floats near the coast in May and June. He likes to boast when he speaks of his boat. He tells us, “I throw loads and loads of oatmeal onto the deck of my boat. I ship it up the coast to sell. I must go tomorrow to take a load to a fellow up north.” Bill does have many tales to tell about his boat! © Danco Phonics Readers

Unit #25 The Weather The weather can be funny. Some days it is hot. Some days it rains. On the rainy days, I put on a sweater. Sweaters are meant to keep you warm when you step outside. On bad snow days, you can see your breath. Your breath is like fog when it comes out. On heavy snow days you must stay inside your pleasant home. Sweat Sweat comes from under your skin. On hot days, you sweat. Your body does not get as hot when you sweat. Some men dread the hot weather. This is when they sweat a lot. If you wear a cap, your head will have sweat on it. If you lift heavy things, you will sweat. Dogs do not sweat. They pant. But, who wants to be a dog anyway? Randy, Martha, and Mrs. Duck “Ready or not, here I come!” shouts Randy. “Wait for me!” yells Martha. Randy and Martha have come to jump into the shallow pond. As they get wet, a healthy duck swims past them. Then the duck spreads her wings and she is gone like a flash. She is in the air ready to fly north. “See you next year, Mrs. Duck,” we say. The Breadbox The dry, stale, wheat bread sits inside the breadbox. Day after day it sits until it gets put into the trashcan. If the bread gets wet, green stuff will start to be seen on it. Bread like this is not healthy to eat. It could make you very sick. Once bread turns green, it is meant for the trashcan! Green eggs and ham; yes. Green toast; no! Deaf is Not Bad Some kids are born deaf. It is not bad to be deaf. When you are deaf, you cannot hear like some kids can. Sometimes you cannot hear at all. If you are deaf, it can be hard to speak. To speak well with your lips, you must hear well. Kids who are deaf can use hands to speak with. © Danco Phonics Readers

Unit #27 My Single Uncle My single uncle is able to do many things. He has a very big nose that he can wiggle back and forth. The dimple on his cheek stays still until he smiles. Then it rises up on his cheek. The best trick is when he crumbles a plastic bottle in his hand. It crackles when he squeezes it hard. Marbles Simple things are fun to do. One thing I like to do is play with marbles. First, you jiggle the marbles in your hand. Then you toss them in the dirt. Next, you grab a marble that sparkles. If you are able, make the marble land near the pile of marbles. If you win the game, you get to keep a marble. Bottles “Are you done with your bottle of apple drink?” asked the waiter. Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle. “I’m done with my apple drink.” said Scott, “That was simple. I am able to drink more than one bottle at a time.” The waiter asked Scott if he would like more to drink. “Please bring one more bottle of apple drink to my table,” said Scott. The Jungle and Forest The jungle has many plants in it. When the plants die, beetles eat them up. Monkeys eat the plants as well. If you were in the jungle, you would be able to eat plant parts like the monkeys do. Should you ever get lost in a forest, you could get the maple from a maple tree. People put maple in jars to use on pancakes. The Puddle One day we had a big rain. When the day was done, there was a big puddle as big as a lake. I could feel a tingle on my head. “Here comes the rain.” I said, “It may rain hard some more.” Then there was a rumble and I felt a tremble. More rain was on the way. The next day, there were puddles on each street. © Danco Phonics Readers

Unit #28 My Dodge Truck When I was a kid, I had a white and yellow Dodge pickup truck. It was like no other I have had. It was quick-as-a-wink as it went over bridges and onto the road. Once, the brakes got stuck and the truck would not budge an inch. I had to walk miles and miles until I got to a lodge. Then, I got a ride back to my home. The Train Ride Once, I went on a train ride with my mom and dad. The train went from state to state. We ate lunch on the train and slept at a travel lodge. Each of us wore badges with names on them. The train went past green hedges and pine trees. My mom gave me a nudge so I would not miss the rivers and lakes near the train. The Smudge Have you ever eaten a wedge of fudge cake? It is best when it is hot. Fudge drips from the sides of the cake and onto the plate. Fudge will leave a bad smudge on a white table cloth. Each time I eat fudge cake, I make a mess. Once, I got fudge on my finger. I went to itch my eye and got fudge on my nose. What a mess! Birds Birds like to make nests on ledges that cannot be seen. These ledges are far from other spots that are easy to see. Birds like nests that are not low. Low nest are hard to keep safe. Birds like to fly and land on the ridges of homes. Ridges are safe spots for birds to land on. The Edge Matt and Mark went for a swim near the edge of a pond one day. They had to trudge from one side of the pond to the east bridge. Matt and Mark jump off of the bridges at this time. Matt nudges Mark to get him to jump first. Then Mark tickles Matt to get him to jump off of the bridge. Matt and Mark jump in at once. © Danco Phonics Readers

Unit #29a My Brother Max My brother Max hits his yellow balloon up to a hoop in his bedroom. He got the balloon when we went to the zoo last week. Soon he will loose his balloon. Max looses many things. Once, he lost his boots as soon as he got them. His pet goose got loose last week at noon. His poodle left too. Max looses too much stuff! Spring Blooms In spring, mother and father watch the weather. As soon as the weather gets warm, they plant seeds. First, they scoop out dirt and plant the seeds. Next, they smooth the dirt on top of the seeds. When the plants start to bloom, they fill up the home with blooms. Fresh spring blooms puts us in a real fine mood. Noon Gloom At noontime, my eyes start to droop. It must be past my naptime. Mother sends me to my room to sleep. This puts me in a bad mood. I want to play at noon, not sleep. She tells me I can choose just two cartoons to watch. Then, I have to take a nap. As soon as the cartoons finish, I go to sleep. The Pool Party Have you ever had a pool party? The best pool party I ever had was last week. My mother, father, sister, and brother made lots of food. We ate and then we ate some more. At noon, we ran to the pool. In the pool, we got to shoot hoops into the net. Next, we had to go to the bathroom to shampoo my hair and clean up. The Silly Rooster The silly rooster shoots from his coop at the break of day. “Cocka-doodle-doo,” screams the rooster, “Cock-a-doodle-doo!” Soon this wakes me up. I shoot from my bed to get my watch. It is just before six! I need more sleep. Mother comes into my room. “Wake up, Sam!” yells mother, “It is time for school.” © Danco Phonics Readers

Unit #29b Crooks Good crooks can steal things fast. They look for the best time to take your stuff. Once, a good crook took my best book. It shook me up. I have never lost a book in my whole life! I got a good look at the crook. He wore a black jacket with a red hood. A crook who took a book; he must like to read! A Hurt Foot When you step on a hook, it hurts very much! Your foot starts to swell up and turn red. You look and look until you see your mother or father. Once your mother or father comes, he or she takes good care of you. “Look!” yells mother, “He has a hook in his foot. We must take him to the doctor.” In the Woods Have you ever seen a bear? They live in the woods. It is hard to get a good look at bears unless you stand by a brook. There, they drink and look for fish to eat. Do not try to play with bears. They may get mad and hurt you. You cannot run as fast as a bear. A good plan would be to look at bears from far off. The Dent My father had a car with a dent in the hood. A tree fell from the woods and hit his hood. My father just stood still to look at the dent in his hood. He shook his head in dismay. “This is not good. I will have to fix the dent in my hood,” said Father. He took his car to the car shop. It took a week to fix the hood of his car. On the Hook “Look on my hook! It is a fish,” said Nick. Nick took a look inside his fish book. His fish book shows a catfish in it. Nick took the fish off of the hook and put it into a bucket. Then he put bait on his hook. He shook his hook to catch the next fish. It did not look like the catfish in the book. © Danco Phonics Readers

Unit #30 Roy’s Toy Roy has a toy that he enjoys very much. It is a corduroy teddy bear that speaks. Roy’s toy bear has oil spots and rips on its legs. Roy got his toy bear dirty. He should clean his toy bear’s legs soon. The bear was clean before Roy got him as a gift. Roy’s legs are dirty too. Maybe they could take a bath at the same time. The Noise “What’s that noise?” asked Coy. “What noise?” asked Joy. “It was a scream,” said Matt. Screams annoy boys. They do not like to hear girls scream. The scream was heard one more time. “Aren’t they done yet?” asked Coy. No. The girls’ screams weren’t done yet. The girls made more noise still. “They like to annoy us,” said the boys. Boyhood Boyhood is a good time in life. Boys like to play in moist soil in the daytime. They enjoy it when they can annoy their sisters too. They play with toys and make lots of noise. Boys destroy things that aren’t theirs. They like it when their dads spoil them with things. Do they take care of their things? Some do and some do not. Coins Coins are good to have in your pocket. Some men avoid coins. The noise they make annoys them. They like to have bills in their pockets instead. Men toil and toil at their jobs. They do not want to deal with coins that make noise in their pockets. Men act like coins are bad to have. If you put coins together, they add up to bills! To Join or Not to Join We weren’t pals until Jill asked me to swim with her. “Will you join the swim team this year?” she asked me. She felt I should join the swim team soon. She would point to the pool and say, “I will join if you join.” I felt I had to join the team. “It will be lots of fun,” she would say. “I hope so,” I would say. © Danco Phonics Readers

Unit #31 Mr. Brown’s Cow Mr. Brown had a black and white cow that would act like a clown. You’d think his cow would scowl when Mr. Brown put a gown on her, but she did not. Around the farm, she would run as proud as she could be. Mr. Brown’s kids would chase their cow to the south end of the farm where they’d play with her for hours. The Mouse House Haven’t you heard of a mouse house? A mouse house can be in a blouse, under a towel, or in a flour sack. A mouse can make its home in a field too. When the farmer plows his field, the mouse hears loud noises in his house. He runs outside to see what is about to happen. A dust cloud rises from the ground. No more mouse house! Time to Shower Shower time is not a bad thing. You do not need to pout, frown, or slouch in your seat. Showers can be fun. Some moms allow kids to shower in their trousers or do math in the bath! You’d better not howl or get rowdy in the shower unless you want Mom to shout at you. “Get out!” she may shout, “Out! Out! Out!” Our Town Our town is about three miles south of the school. It has thousands of kids who like to clown around. The town allows kids to howl out loud from the top of the tower. They allow kids to jump on their couches, shout in their houses, and throw towels down on the ground. This is how kids have fun in our town! Scouts Boy Scouts have a great deal of fun. They get to hike and camp out, fish for trout, count owls, and act rowdy. The Scouts allow any boy to join the fun. Scouts are a proud bunch. They can teach you how to tie a rope, track down a deer, or shout out loud. Scouts are good to have in town. © Danco Phonics Readers

Unit #32 The Boys and Girls The boys and girls hardly ever help out around the house. Mom wishes that they would be more helpful. The oldest boy said he cleaned the house last week. The youngest girl said she will clean the house quickly by throwing toys here and there. The excuses seem endless. Mom is thinking of getting a friend to help her clean the house. My Wishes I have many wishes. I would like to be a baker and bake the sweetest treats on earth. I have worked hard at baking and I am hopeful that one day I will have my own shop. One other wish I have is to invent a sucker that lasts longer than any other. Kids could suck quickly or softly and the sucker would never melt.

School I enjoy going to school. I have fun adding and subtracting numbers during math time. For P.E., we take time for stretching and running before we play our game. Sometimes we even have contests to see which team yells the loudest during the game. The other classes think we are the wildest group on campus. Cars Cars can be helpful to get from here to there. Being reckless with cars is not a good plan. When you become a teen, you will want the coolest car on the market. Some teens want their car to be the loudest. When you drive, you should be careful on the road. Sadly, many teens are not so careful when they drive.

Unit #33 My City My city has much to see. The city has a bicycle shop and grocery store in center of it. Lucy and Gene like to race to The Snack Shack to get hot cider and popcorn on chilly days. Twice each week, they run like mice to get their snacks. Since the weather has been cool, Lucy and Gene drink more cider than ever before. Grace Grace is the name of the girl next door. She often gets into danger when she plays by herself. Once, a stranger asked her to get into his car. She said, “No!” and raced home. Since then, she has managed to stay out of danger. She decided that she should stay away from strangers. No one will change her mind about that! The Princesses Alice thinks she is a princess. Her niece thinks she is a princess as well. The girls dance around in lace dresses on the stage outside. Once, they bounced off of the stage and landed up against the fence. They scratched their faces on the fence. Now they dance in the center of the stage to keep space between them and the fence! The Magic Show Magic shows are fun to watch. Each night a boy named Prince gets on stage to do his magic show. He has one trick that he does with ice. He makes the ice turn into a gem. Then he turns the gem into a pencil. After that, he slices a one cent coin into two! He gets his tricks from The Magic Place in the city. Mice Mice are not nice to have in the house. They like to eat food that has been left out. They’ll look for places to hide. When you aren’t looking, they’ll race out of their hiding places and eat your slices of meat, pieces of rice, or any groceries you have out. They seem gentle and nice, but they’ll make a real mess! © Danco Phonics Readers

Unit #34 Naughty Paul Paul was a naughty boy when he was a kid. He did some awful things that would make anyone’s jaw drop. Paul used to crawl under the sink and loosen the faucet. He got caught, one time, when the faucet started launching water into the air. This caused a great deal of damage to the kitchen. It was Paul’s fault. Flying Saucers Flying saucers are launched into the air at dawn. They’re seen after dark as they pause in the sky. Some say flying saucers are frauds. From my lawn, I have seen them! In August I saw many more of them than at any other time of the year. Autumn is another time of the year that is good for seeing flying saucers. The Author “We’re glad to have an author here with us today. You’re going to enjoy what he has to say about hawks. Let’s give him a round of applause,” said the author’s daughter. “My dad taught me how to hunt hawks. He taught me the laws that protect hawks and how he caught his first hawk. Please hear what he has to say.” Is it a Law or Not? Is there a law that says you cannot crawl on the lawn? No there is not. Is there a law that says August must be the hottest time of the year? No there is not. Is there a law that says you cannot commit fraud? Yes there is. Is there a law that says you must do your laundry at dawn? No there is not. What is the Cause? What can cause you to yawn? You yawn when you are tired. What can cause you to break a saucer? Slipping in the kitchen can cause a saucer to break. What can cause ice to thaw? The sun can do it. What can cause a kid to bawl and scream out loud? Just about anything can cause this to happen! © Danco Phonics Readers

Unit #35 Tuesday’s Stew Last week we had stew for dinner. It was last Tuesday, to be exact. This stew was hard to chew. There was far too much fat in each piece of meat. Mom said we did not have to eat it. Then she threw the stew into the trash. It’s true! She just threw the stew away! Dad said, “Let’s cruise down to the store and get some new food.” Apple Juice Do you like apple juice? I do. I just grab the jar, unscrew the lid, and enjoy tall glasses of apple juice. On the news it said that apple juice is good for growing boys and girls. I think it is better than chewing an apple and a lot less work. I think some kids do not have a clue when it comes to health. A New Blue Suit I have a beautiful new blue suit. I have worn it three times now, but I will not wear it again. Last time I wore it, it got stained with blood. I threw it in the laundry to get it clean. That made the suit shrink. My mom flew off the handle when she heard about it. Now I have a suit that fits my cat!
