From the Executive Director

From the President, Board of Directors

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Dear Friends,

Clausen House is here to stay!

Thank you all very much for joining us this evening. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I want to thank you for your support of Clausen House. In times of economic instability, the support of our extended Clausen House family is more critical than ever.

Times are tough. Eighty percent of Clausen House’s funding comes from the State of California, and there have been cuts; there will be more. Private philanthropy has also declined. Clausen House, however, is viable. We have been providing highquality services to men and women with developmental disabilities since 1967, and we will continue to do so. In fact, we are researching new ways to enhance and expand our services. Though we have cut expenses and instituted furlough days for top management, we have not cut programs. It’s true that we need your support. However, you can be sure that you are backing a winner. We want you to help us move the ship forward, not just keep it afloat!

From the “Chair-iff”

From the Grand Marshal

Dear “Pardners” (and you are our “Pardners!”),

Dear Friends and Families,

Howdy and welcome! Like our Buckaroos and dignitaries, I thank you for being here. As we come together for good food and great fun, let’s also remember why we are here. Clausen House believes that ladies and gents with developmental disabilities are a precious asset to the community: not “those less fortunate,” not a “problem” to be solved. We’re here to support them as much as they need so they can do their part in making the world a better place. If you see things as I do (as I know Safeway does), then I hope you’ll cut loose and enjoy yourselves – and enjoy helping our folks do their best. The more generous you are, the more they can accomplish.

By supporting Clausen House, not only are we all helping to enrich the lives of so many adults with developmental disabilities, but we are contributing to the enhancement and beautification of our entire community. A yellow rose to each of you! Jennifer Roloff President, Board of Directors

So let’s get on the bandwagon and make it happen. Let’s have a rip-roaring time tonight and celebrate Clausen House!

Thank you for that help.

I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to all of our generous sponsors, stalwart supporters, event guests, and members of our newly launched Family Alliance who have given of themselves to make this evening and our annual fundraising event a success. In addition, I want to acknowledge the unyielding efforts of our management and staff, whose dedication to our clients enables Clausen House to continue providing quality programs and services that enrich the lives of the developmentally disabled and the greater community of which we are all a part.

Sue Malick Chair-iff, Hoppin’ Hoedown à la Clausen House

Nan Butterworth Executive Director

Our Event Committee has been busy putting together an evening of celebration for the benefit of Clausen House in a year of economic uncertainty. With the support and blessing of the Board of Directors, the concept of Hoppin’ Hoedown à la Clausen House was launched -- a slightly less formal but nonetheless festive event that returns to the East Bay and provides guests with good food, libations, music, prizes and fun, while enabling us to raise funds that help Clausen House continue the good work of providing quality services to the developmentally disabled community we serve.

It’s time to Circle the Wagons against the Impact of Budget Cuts!

We’ve had a bucking bronco of a year! The State budget cuts have rolled back rates of reimbursement for Supported Employment to levels lower than they were nine years ago. Payment for critical services such as dental, podiatry, ophthalmology and mental health have been eliminated for many of our clients. Social recreation and respite

will not receive State funding. While our hands are firmly at the reins and we are committed to continue providing

quality service, we need your help. Every dollar donated will be used to continue the level of service we provide Clausen House clients. Join us now by contributing what you can. Donate or pledge today and help us fight back against the funding gap created by the State budget cuts. 1

Clausen House Salutes Safeway

Since 1991, Safeway has been a partner with Clausen House in employing men and women with developmental disabilities. Clausen House wishes to honor Safeway, not just for this valued relationship, but for a deeper reason. Clausen House’s view is that people with developmental disabilities are an asset to the community and a contributing force in society. It means a great deal to us that Safeway shares the same view. Not only has Safeway’s CEO, Steve Burd, publicly stated that people with developmental disabilities are among the company’s best employees; the company has backed up this advocacy to the point where five percent of its workforce nationwide consists of persons with disabilities. The yellow scarf is a symbol of Clausen House. Yellow connotes mental activity, sunlight and optimism. Tonight Clausen House presents its first Yellow Scarf Award to Safeway. Safeway has earned this tribute for its exemplary community service; in particular, for Safeway’s commitment and devotion to Clausen House’s Supported Employment Program.

7. Fund-a-Need

Thankfully, attitudes toward disabilities have shifted dramatically since Clausen House opened its doors in 1967. Having a developmental disability is no longer regarded as a handicap, but as a characteristic of the individual. Clausen House’s clients have proven themselves in the areas of employment, volunteerism, and independent living, to name a few. As we help these capable men and women achieve inclusion in the community, we are asking for your assistance. Here are some examples of what your support can accomplish: Provide job placement, training, and coaching for Supported Employment employees Allow Independent Living instructors to assist self-sufficient clients with necessary life skills Provide Supported Living clients with extra assistance due to health and age-related issues Continue the Adult Education program’s fitness, horseback-riding, yoga, dance, healthy cooking, and community volunteerism courses Extend the Clausen House Health Initiative to the Residential and Social Recreation programs. This evening, every dollar pledged to Fund-a-Need will be doubled up to $25,000 from our anonymous “angel.” We’d like to encourage 100% participation in Fund-a-Need tonight to help us get at least $50,000. Help us meet this challenge! Please note: we accept stock donations.

Family Alliance Early in 2009, the Family Alliance was launched as a grassroots effort when Clausen House was hit with a first round of state budget cutbacks. Even at a time of declining philanthropy, family members of clients responded by donating and by spreading the word about Clausen House’s people and programs. Over time, the Alliance grew to include not just clients’ family members, but their friends and neighbors as well. With over $30,000 raised to date, our Family Alliance has shown that challenges can be overcome when people work together. Tonight, we look to them to inspire us to be generous in our giving.
