COLLEGE

overview Your journey at Strode’s is just beginning and along the way you will face new challenges, develop your potential and achieve your goals. Sixth Form College life is exciting but comes with greater individual responsibility. You will flourish in a more adult environment where mutual respect is paramount. Strode’s can help you, from your first enquiry for advice on courses to progression on to your next career steps. Strode’s can provide you with a fresh start. We are a small/medium sized College with around 1,100 students aged 16-18. We can offer you an extensive range of courses where most combinations of subjects are possible. We set very high expectations of our students and in return we offer exceptional support from our well qualified, experienced and dedicated staff. We encourage all our students to develop their self-confidence, fulfil their potential and achieve their ambitions in a supportive and friendly environment. Strode’s is the largest provider of A Level education in north west Surrey. We offer 32 subjects at A Level and a full range of Level 3 BTECs. Intermediate (Level 2) courses are also available, as well as a variety of enrichment courses. As a student at Strode’s College you will have a personalised timetable and you will follow an individual learning programme designed to fulfil your aims and aspirations. You will learn alongside your teachers and peers and will be encouraged to develop your 4

individuality and achieve your potential. Whilst you will spend about half of your time in lessons, you will also have some periods which you will need to use for self-managed study, including preparing for lessons, coursework, assignments and reviewing your learning. Staff are on hand in our Learning Centre to help you develop your skills. We expect you to work independently for an average of five hours per week for each subject you are studying. We encourage you to spend about half your independent study time in College. You can access our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) either at College using a College computer, using the College’s wi-fi network, on your own laptop or mobile phone, at home, or in a public library. We provide high quality information, advice and guidance through our careers service and tutorial system to assist you to progress to Higher Education, an apprenticeship or employment.

STUDENT PROFILE NAME: Thomas PREVIOUS SCHOOL: Jubilee High School SUBJECTS: Biology, Chemistry, Computing and Mathematics (Statistics) A Level I chose Strode’s over other colleges because when I attended the Introduction Day I felt comfortable. The teachers and students were also very welcoming and approachable. I chose my subjects because I enjoyed them at GCSE. One of my favourites is Biology because I find the natural world amazing, whether that would be a minute strand of DNA or an entire ecosystem. Maths and Computing are great as well because they are challenging and I enjoy the problem solving aspect. My final subject I chose was Chemistry, I wasn’t sure at first, but I don’t regret picking it at all! It has links with Biology and is also very mathematical (which I like), so it goes well with these two subjects. The teachers are very friendly. They offer regular drop in sessions if you get stuck and they give us excellent feedback on our work. In Biology and Chemistry for example, they use their own ‘MARCKS’ technique which helps you to know what you specifically need to improve on. What I like best about Strode’s is that it is a fantastic place to study. There are quiet rooms, a library, group study area and computer rooms – allowing you to study in whatever way you want to. After Strode’s if I am lucky enough I would love to read Natural Sciences at Cambridge or Exeter University. I feel this degree is right for me because it allows me to choose my favourite modules in Biology, Chemistry and Maths, so I don’t have to give up a subject completely.

STUDENT PROFILE NAME: Huyen PREVIOUS SCHOOL: Thomas Knyvett College SUBJECTS: Chemistry, Physics and Maths (Mechancis) A Levels When I attended Strode’s Open Evening, the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) department really ‘sold it’! I loved the new science buildings, especially the Chemistry lab. Everything is so organised and I like to find things easily when carrying out an experiment. Hearing the student recommendations for studying Maths at Strode’s enabled me to get a sense of how great the teaching quality is. I chose the subjects I am studying because I like problem solving, especially in Maths. I feel that I have gained more confidence in communicating my ideas with other pupils and in Science, the teachers don’t just prepare you for your exams, they also guide you to think like an undergraduate. The staff are all really supportive, friendly and approachable and the teachers always respond to your emails even if it’s half term so you can carry on revising. This has made my experience at Strode’s even more productive and I can’t wait to use my new skills to progress into Higher Education. After Strode’s my intention is to study Chemistry at York University and longer term hopefully become a teacher of Maths.

Most students who follow this pathway will study three A Level courses in addition to enrichment courses. BTEC Level 3 courses on the Advanced Pathway are typically more practical, work related courses. They are more ‘hands on’ and will be assessed mainly through coursework. Selected units will have externally set tasks, performances or written tests included which may be up to 25% of your programme. Depending upon your Maths and English results you may choose to do either a mix of BTEC Level 3 courses or a mix of BTEC Level 3 courses in combination with one or two A Levels. All of these courses are studied over a period of two years and are equivalent to three A Levels. Option 1: A combination of one A Level and a BTEC Level 3 National Diploma Option 2: A combination of two A Levels and one BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma or Extended Certificate. Option 3: A combination of one A Level and two BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificates. Our Level 3 National Diploma is equivalent to two A Levels and our Extended Certificate is equivalent to one A Level. If you are progressing from a Level 2 BTEC to a Level 3 BTEC you need to have achieved a BTEC Level 2 course with Merit, including a Pass in the externally tested unit. This only applies if you have taken a BTEC Level 2 course.

BTEC CERTIFICATE BTEC Level 2 courses are practical and work related. They are ‘hands on’ and are assessed through assignments and 25% external assessment. The BTEC Level 2 courses are studied over one year. Option 1: A combination of two BTEC Certificates If you select to study two BTEC Certificate courses you will be required to study either the relevant Maths and English qualification at Level 1 or 2 unless you have already achieved at least a grade C in Maths and English Language GCSE or equivalent. Option 2: A combination of one BTEC Certificate and GCSEs If you select to study one BTEC certificate you will be required to study two GCSEs, including the relevant Maths and English qualification at Level 1 or 2 unless you have already achieved at least a grade C in Maths and English Language GCSE or equivalent. If you have already achieved a grade C in either Maths or English you have the option to take the BTEC Science Award alongside the relevant Maths or English qualification. Both of the above Pathways also include a full tutorial programme and allocated independent study time and operate over four days per week. 11

ENRICHING YOUR

Strode’s EXPERIENCE Achieving good grades is very important and at Strode’s we want you to leave feeling confident and prepared for university or employment and be ready to achieve in the real world. Each year we give you the opportunity to get involved in a number of additional non-curricular activities as part of your programme of study. We encourage you to mix with different people and to discover and develop new interests and hobbies. Some of the enrichment activities we run include: our A*spire programme, Duke of Edinburgh, Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), the College Play, Science and Maths Olympiads, Team Sports, Young Enterprise, Choir, Debating Society and many more.

THE A*SPIRE PROGRAMME As a Strode’s student you may be eligible to join our exclusive A*spire programme. This is a dedicated, timetabled, structured and high quality programme to support students with outstanding GCSE results (3 A*/A grades at GCSE). Our A*spire programme is designed to support the most gifted and talented students to expand above and beyond their capacity. We build their confidence and skills to articulate well reasoned thoughts, challenge conventional thinking and build strong arguments. The programme will stretch students through assignments designed to meet the entry requirements of elite universities. 12

Those applying to competitive universities, predominantly those in the Russell Group, Oxford and Cambridge, will receive specialist support. We will help you make educated choices regarding the subjects you want to pursue, understand the competitive selection process and systems and be able to submit an elite application form and excel at your interview. Last year the College sent a record number of students to Oxford and Cambridge to read a variety of subjects, including Maths, History and Chemistry.

EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION (EPQ) The EPQ can be selected to run alongside only Advanced Level courses and is a highly recommended course by universities and employers. The EPQ allows you to explore a topic in depth and helps you develop your independent research skills. Strode’s has a great deal of experience and knowledge of the EPQ and ensures you produce excellent projects that achieve top marks.

SPORT, PERFORMING ARTS AND MUSIC Sports teams train each week and regularly compete in local leagues against other colleges. Most sports training and competitions are built into the timetable within the College day and are compulsory for all A Level PE students. There is a strong tradition of success at county, national and international levels in a number of sports including football, rugby and netball. For those who prefer a non-competitive environment in which to participate, students have access to the fitness suite and a range of lunchtime clubs. Theatre visits and workshops enhance work in Drama, Dance and Music. This year students watched and supported many different productions, ranging from experimental physical theatre to contemporary dance and music concerts. Each year students perform in a number of in-house and external performances which showcase the very best of their abilities and talent. The Performing Arts Department has an excellent relationship with professional artists and companies such as the National Theatre, Random Dance and The Royal Ballet. Students have performed at Bush Theatre, London this year as part of the National Theatre Connections project, as well as taking part in New Views. Dance students participate annually in a highly successful show, which this year was held at The Magna Carta School, Staines. The ethos of performing arts and music focuses on developing professional skills, as well as ensuring students are prepared for employment. This means that passion and drive, mixed with commitment and dedication, create a disciplined performer. 13

STUDENT PROFILE NAME: Benedict PREVIOUS SCHOOL: The Brakenhale School SUBJECTS: Creative Media Production BTEC and Film Studies A Level Strode’s College represented a new start and a fresh environment for me and it also offered interesting courses that not many other places offered. My subject choices have proven to be very enjoyable and I believe that they will provide me with all the necessary skills and knowledge to be able to thrive in my desired industry. While I do receive a lot of coursework, there is always enough time to do assignments and I have never felt overloaded. One of the things I like most about my courses are the teachers, the atmosphere is a lot friendlier compared to school and they always manage to make the subjects interesting as well. The teachers are always ready to help in lessons, but also support me a lot out of lessons in independent time. An example of this is that in one of my classes the teacher runs an optional extra class once a week. This class can be used to catch up on work or to talk about any issues or trouble with the course. In my opinion the best thing about Strode’s is that the students are completely responsible. After Strode’s, I have already got lots of plans for my future, and I have a firm idea of what I want to do. I know which university to aim for and I know how to get in to the industry I want to. I honestly think that Strode’s has helped me work towards these goals and I know that they will help me in the future.

STUDENT PROFILE NAME: Jessica PREVIOUS SCHOOL: Magna Carta School SUBJECTS: English Literature, Philosophy, Physics A Level The appeal to study at Strode’s, for me, largely stemmed from how far it differed from secondary school education, in size, freedom and student life in general. Additionally, being so close to the prestigious Royal Holloway further increased my desire to study at Strode’s as it felt as though it would motivate me to pursue A Levels to my highest ability, being amongst such a historical and academic environment as a London University town. The courses I chose to study heavily reflect my broad involvement in both the sciences and the arts, ultimately how I longed to pursue both areas I thrived in at GCSE. However it is through the rigorous process of A Levels and the academic jump from GCSE to AS Level that allowed me to find my academic strengths, clarifying that the arts are where my true passion lies. Strode’s allowed me to immerse myself into new areas of academia such as philosophy which I had previously never studied. I found that my engagement with philosophy grew throughout the year the more we discussed, and as we were a small class it felt comfortable to express our opinions and thoughts ultimately, a true passion in the subject was formed through this sociable environment. Through active discussion and debate in class, even the most difficult and abstract concepts such as the Mind, Knowledge and Existence become engaging, so much so as to lead me to read journals and magazines around my course specification to further my understanding and interest. Despite an inherent love for English, it is philosophy at Strode’s that I feel has truly shaped my academic future and determined how far I want to further enrich my mind. I long to continue my education into university level as a direct result of my academic inspiration established in philosophy.

STUDENT PROFILE NAME: Johti PREVIOUS SCHOOL: Thamesmead School SUBJECTS: Media Studies, Biology and English Literature and Language A Levels and Extended Project Qualification I decided on Strode’s as I enjoy a smaller working environment because it’s more personalised and dynamic. The teachers want to get to know you and make you feel welcome and they showed real enthusiasm and passion of their subject at Open Evening. I chose subjects that I had long held an interest in and I looked forward to studying at an advanced level. I took Biology as I felt inspired by the new labs that Strode’s had fitted and also due to my love of the subject. I chose Media because I like how your opinion matters and you gain insight into the media’s perspective of the world around you and I chose English because I like the balance of literature and language. My favourite subject is English Literature & Language because the coursework pieces granted a lot of freedom and you get the opportunity to write both analytically and creatively. I find the teachers are helpful as they reply to my emails promptly and even after College hours with detailed feedback and helpful tips on how to improve your work. This is particularly helpful in subjects with coursework when deadlines are fast approaching.

I would recommend Strode’s because they have a good balance between freedom and student support because we’re able to design our own study schedules and take charge of our learning but help is always available and effective, should you need it. My favourite thing about Strode’s is the facilities, there is always somewhere to study; whether it is independently or as part of a group. Strode’s also gives you a feeling of potential, with regular opportunities and extra curricular activities to take part in.

Voice

& GETTING INVOLVED At Strode’s we believe that listening to all our students is key to helping us improve the services we offer. We have a Student Parliament which meets three times a year and each tutor group elects representatives to attend. They represent student views to the senior leadership team and take advice from tutor representatives about what activities and issues they should be concentrating on. One of our key aims is for the Student Voice to work with the College to improve all aspects of College life and provision. They also campaign on national issues that are of interest to students and young people working with the NUS, for example on votes at 16. We encourage students to take part in activities outside of the classroom to support the College community and prepare them for the future. You can develop new skills essential for employment and university. Students are welcome to start their own committees or clubs, or join existing groups, such as the Charity Committee or our Student Union. Individual students, past and present, are invited to speak about their experiences at Strode’s at events such as Open Evenings and Prize Giving. Our community volunteering scheme helps students to find local volunteering placements and students can obtain recognition for their work through the V-inspired scheme. Our enrichment activities, together with our progression programme of talks, workshops and alumni events, can help you develop skills valued by universities and employers. 38

STUDENT

Union All students are members of Strode’s Student Union. The elected Student Union officers are here to help you make the most of your time at Strode’s. We represent student views to senior management and we have members on the College Board of Governors. Through the regular Student Parliaments, the elected officers take advice from tutor reps about what activities and issues we should be concentrating on. One of our key aims is to work with the College to improve all aspects of College life and provision. We also campaign on national issues of interest to students and young people working with the National Union of Students (NUS), for example on votes at 16 or the recent campaign to ‘Drop the learning tax’ on sixth form colleges. We help to organise social events such as the Freshers’ Fair, Christmas Fair and tutorial bake-off and the leavers’ event in Summer. We arrange competitions and charity fund raising events throughout the year, such as the Jolly Jumper Day and the Equality and Diversity Calendar Competition. We are ambassadors of the College and support as much as we can, such as representing the College at open evenings, events for new students and a variety of careers events. We are really keen to get students involved in setting up societies or suggesting events for us to run, so when you join the College do visit our office in the Student Centre and say ‘hello’.

BRITISH VALUES AT STRODE’S COLLEGE At Strode’s College we believe British values are essential for creating a strong community. We work hard to prepare students to be rounded and valuable members of society, equipped to play a positive and active role in Modern Britain. We support students’ understanding of British values through our strong culture of mutual respect and through our clearly communicated standards of behaviour. All our students have a voice and are encouraged to participate in a variety of representational structures such as our Student Union, tutor rep system and Student Parliaments. They will learn about democracy through their subjects and our core studies programme. We also celebrate the individuality of all our students and staff and promote understanding of the benefits of diversity.

So come on, what are you waiting for …. get involved and make a difference! We look forward to meeting you! 39

STUDENT PROFILE NAME: Michael PREVIOUS SCHOOL: Sunbury Manor SUBJECTS: Law, Psychology and Sociology A Levels My school teacher encouraged me to attend a Strode’s Open Evening to look at Law and also my brother attended Strode’s and he really liked it. When I attended the Open Evening, I felt the environment was friendly and welcoming too, and I instantly felt at ease. I chose my subjects based on my interests and my passion to study Law at University. Psychology and Sociology interest me also, and can be carried over to gain additional ways to think about crime, mental issues and the social implications of crime. The teachers are full of enthusiasm and passion. They provide excellent online resources and have been particularly helpful in both supporting me in my subjects and my UCAS application. The Learning Centre has a good atmosphere and there are different areas you can use to study, such as the independent area, silent study area but I also enjoy revising with others so I can often be found in the group study area. I intend to go to University after Strode’s to read Law. This is of course dependant on my exams, but I am confident that I can achieve these results thanks to the great support I have had at Strode’s.
