Happy November, Whit t ier Famil ies! Har d to believe it is already November!

We need to start off this newsletter with the FUN RUN! It is so exciting to announce that you exceeded our goal of $14,000 by raising over $17,300!!!! Fantastic job! We are so proud of our scholars and families and the pride they have for our school. We couldn?t have asked for better weather! And the energy on the playground that morning at drop off was amazing! A huge thank you must go out to Mary Furman (her 6th year chairing the Fun Run), Elizabeth Cruz and Claire Schnizlein for organizing this event and to all of the parents who volunteered their time to make this event such a huge success! It just keeps getting better and better every year! And the All School Dance Party was a hit. Beautiful weather again and the kids really got into it and enjoyed their reward. And we also need to say thank you to Gayla Morales and Karen Doyle for organizing another fabulous Book Fair. It is always so much fun to watch the auditorium be transformed into our very own book store with such a fantastic selection of books for our teachers, kids and families.

Thank you to Natalie Ashton to organizing our Teacher/ Staff Conference Dinner. Thank you also to all of our parents who stepped forward to bring items to make this meal a success! Our hard working teachers deserve this extra little bit of pampering on these long days of conferences. There are a few dates we want you to mark in your calendar (in ink if you can :) ): Thursday, November 10t h - Pl ease join us f or l unch or dinner at Thai Express Oak Park restaurant at 250 Chicago Avenue. Thank you f or making t he Fun Run a Smashing Success! Way to go, Whittier Wildcats! We had a very successful Fun Run this year, having far surpassed our goal of $14,000. We are still adding, but so far, together we raised $17,300+? exceeding the goal by more than 24% ! WOW! These funds support programs like Homework Helpers, ACES and Opera for the Young; field trip bus trips; library support and community events like all-school picnics. Really outstanding! Because we reached our all-school goal, the kids got to have a dance party on the blacktop on a beautiful October afternoon on Friday, October 14. A kid favorite is the limousine lunch prize with Principal Warner. Because the Fun Run did so well, we added a third limousine lunch. Congrats to all 15 kids that won spots! Other prizes included Whittier Wear, Geppetto's Toy Box and Lively Running gift cards. Special thanks to the local businesses that donated items for the Fun Run - Sugar Beet Co-Op (bananas), Geppetto's Toy Box (gift cards) and Lively Running (gift card, running socks and hair ties). Thank you to the parent volunteers who helped out at the Fun Run, handing out food, taking pictures, and helping coordinate classrooms. A very special thanks to the PTO members who stayed all day at the Fun Run, including Mary Furman, Elizabeth Cruz, Claire Schnizlein, Kristen Alfonsi, Stephanie Thomas and Terri McConville. Dear Whittier Families,

The campaign is underway! And not the one you?re thinking of? this one is much more important! Scaredy Squirrel and Bad Kitty have been furiously campaigning for votes in our all-school election. We?ve been reading the candidates?books, developing platforms and slogans, and creating campaign posters. Some classrooms have become Campaign Managers for either Team Kitty or Team Squirrel and have been putting together some exciting materials. We?ll be voting on November 7th? stay tuned to see who our winner is! We had a wonderful author visit from Jon Agee earlier this year! He spoke to kindergartners, first and second graders and drew us some incredible pictures. Mr. Agee writes and illustrates distinctive picture books about dogs, magicians, and a retired kid, among other many things. His newest book, Lion Lessons, is hilarious! Mr. Agee gave us a drawing demo and answered students? questions, then autographed books. Many thanks to the Magic Tree Bookstore for giving us the opportunity to meet this fantastic author! The kids loved it! The October Book Fair was a big success this year. The money raised by the book fair goes to support the school and the library so we greatly appreciate your support. The PTO generously donated many new books to the Whittier Library? everything from Lego Knights and Castles to Grumpy Cat: A Grumpy Book! We?re so lucky to have an active PTO that helps support our school through these fun programs. Our birthday books program is also up and running? in honor of your child's birthday or other special event, you may adopt a book for our library. Please feel free to contact me if you?re interested in participating and, as always, visit our library website at www.op97.org/ whittier/ mediacenter/ . Happy reading! Service Day Thank you to all who participated in the Fall Garden Service Day on Sunday, October 16. A lot was accomplished to help put the outdoor spaces to rest for the winter and prepare for next Spring. In the Greenleaf Garden, many volunteers helped to weed, clean out the garden planting areas, put away trellises, spread LOTS of compost, and expand the teepee garden for the Spring. In the Courtyard, volunteers helped clean up and weed. In the front of the building, volunteers helped to move several plants and grasses to beautify the front of the school. Thanks Whittier families!
