What is this course about?

1.1

Course description

This course will your develop foundation knowledge of leadership and mentorship within contemporary paramedic practice. You will analyse theories of leadership and mentorship within the context of health and social care, as well as be provided with opportunities to develop a greater insight into your personal leadership and mentorship qualities. The course aims to prepare you for clinical practice and demonstrate the paramedic’s role in patient safety, clinical audit and clinical governance.

• Nature and context of clinical leadership and mentorship • Understanding professional supervision and mentorship • Non-technical skills in the context of leadership and mentorship • Self-development in the context of clinical leadership and transformational practice • Critical reflection of personal leadership experiences taken from the paramedic practice environment • Analysis of clinical leadership challenges in a paramedic practice environment

Assessment Task 1: Critical Reflection Goal:

The goal of this assessment is to undertake a critical reflection analysing individual’s personal mentorship and leadership qualities in the context of professional paramedic practice. The reflection will be peer assessed to provide opportunities for students to formally guide the learning of others.. Product: Critical Reflection Format: 1 critical reflection of 500 words which analyses personal qualities of practitioners in relation to their future leadership and mentorship role. Criteria You will be assessed on:  Ethical: o Critically reflect on personal leadership and mentorship skills and qualities in the context of professional paramedic practice  Empowered: o Demonstrate an ability to undertake formal and informal peer assessment to guide the learning of others  Creative and Critical Thinkers: o Participate in group work to develop colleagues through coaching and mentorship o Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Information literacy Graduate Communication Graduate

The goal of this assessment is to give you an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of leadership styles and principles in practical paramedic context. Product: Presentation Format: You will work with your peers to analyse and evaluate leadership styles and principles in relation to a pre-recorded video demonstrating the provision of paramedic services. You will also be required to discuss the advantages and challenges you faced in working in a group to undertake this assessment task. Criteria You will be assessed on:  Creative and Critical Thinkers: o Analyse styles and principles of leadership and how it applies to the provision of paramedic services o Participate in group work to develop colleagues through coaching and mentorship  Empowered: o Demonstrate an ability to undertake formal and informal peer assessment to guide the learning of others  Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Problem solving Graduate Information Literacy Graduate

The goal of this assessment is for you to demonstrate an understanding of the skills and qualities required to be an effective mentor in preparation for professional paramedic practice. Product: Essay Format: An individual 2000 word essay which discusses mentoring in the context of paramedic practice. Criteria You will be assessed on:  Ethical: o Critically reflect on personal leadership and mentorship skills and qualities in the context of professional paramedic practice  Sustainability: o Evaluate the advantages and limitations of differing educational models in the context of changing demand for health services  Empowered: o Demonstrate an ability to undertake formal and informal peer assessment to guide the learning of others  Creative and Critical Thinkers: o Participate in group work to develop colleagues through coaching and mentorship o Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Communication Graduate Problem solving Graduate Information Literacy Graduate

Additional assessment requirements

Blackboard As a student enrolled in this course you will have access to course information on the Blackboard site. You are strongly recommended to log onto the course site on a regular ensure you have adequate internet access (either off campus or on-campus) in order to access Blackboard regularly and to complete required assessment tasks. Safe Assign In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks are submitted electronically via Safe Assign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that Safe Assign has access to. If required, details of how to submit via Safe Assign will be provided on the Blackboard site of the course. Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct

5.4

Submission penalties

Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate:  5% (of the assessment task’s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task.  10% (of the assessment task’s identified value) for the third day  20% (of the assessment task’s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task.  A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome.
