Introduction to McDougal Littell Middle School Math © 2004 The McDougal Littell Middle School Math series offers a highly differentiated program at each grade level. The mathematics addresses standards and assessment and includes integrated technology. The text features clear step-by-step presentations of math concepts and skills that enable students and parents to read and understand the book. Worked-out examples that are correlated to the exercises are included, and lesson developments and activities that focus on problem solving strategies help students build conceptual understanding. McDougal Littell Middle School Math also features built-in guidance in the text and in the supporting materials on how to take notes, what to include in your notes, and how to review or study for a test. The text and ancillary materials address the needs of students studying independently, absent students, new teachers, and parents by providing support for both in-class and at-home learning. Special Features •

Chapter Openers–Through the use of easy to play games and real-life applications, the chapter openers review skills needed for the upcoming chapter. Extension questions are provided to that the students understand what the mathematical focus of the game is and how it relates to previously learned material. Before, Now, Why?–This feature looks at what prior knowledge is needed to begin the chapter/lesson, lists what will be learned in the chapter/lesson, and provides real world connections that will be studied in the lessons. Notetaking Strand–Notetaking techniques are modeled to provide teaching guidance for this important skill. Within the lessons, additional notetaking examples are integrated to continually show the students how to take good notes and to remind them to write new concepts in their notebooks. Watch Out Girl–This unique character offers additional support by alerting students to common mathematical errors in an eye-catching way. Problem Solving Strategies–Student learn to use one problem-solving method at a time through stepped out examples and related practice. Building Test Taking Skills–This unique feature gives opportunity for students to express what they have learned and models how to format their responses to test questions.

Teachers are supported by a wealth of ancillary materials. A complete listing of all program components is provided on the following page.

Example: The weather forecast says that the chance of rain today is 30%. Should you carry an umbrella? Explain your answer.
