2nd Edition

Fire Resistive Properties of Gypsum

G

ypsum—hydrous calcium sulfate—is an abundant, naturally occurring mineral quarried for a variety of uses, the most common, of course, being gypsum board. Roughly 90 percent of finished interior surfaces are covered today with gypsum products.

“The gypsum in the core of the board actually emits steam when exposed to fire and retards transfer through the panel. This slowdown provides extra time to evacuate a room or building.” It can, in a sense, be compared to what happens when a blowtorch is turned on a block of ice. Although the ice is being melted, one can hold a hand on the opposite side without being burned. Even though the ice gets very thin it effectively blocks the transfer of the intense heat and one’s hand would not be burned until the ice is melted.

Two molecules of water are chemically bound to each calcium sulfate group during the formation of the gypsum crystal. As a result, gypsum is about 21 percent chemically combined water. Calcium Sulfate Dihydrate One of the many unique properties of When gypsum-protected wood or steel gypsum is its ability to give up these structural members are exposed to a water molecules as steam when heated, in a process known fire, the chemically combined water (being released as calcination, making gypsum board ideally fire-resistant. as steam) acts as a thermal barrier until this slow process, known as calcination, is completed. The most important characteristic of drywall, say fire The temperature directly behind the plane of officials, is that it will not burn. “Statistics show that in calcination is only slightly higher than that of recent years, fewer people have died in fires in the U.S.,” boiling water (212°F), which is significantly says the Gypsum Association. “Naturally, there is no single lower than the temperature at which steel reason for the decline. But the diminished number has a begins losing strength or wood ignites. high correlation with the increased use of gypsum products Once calcination is complete, the in-place and other fire-resistant building materials,” they say. calcined gypsum continues to act as a barrier protecting the underlying structural members from direct exposure to flames.

Fire Safety in Building Design

F

ire safety today is one of the most critical issues in designing and constructing any modern structure. Of course, the basic goal and objective is to reduce the probability that a person in or adjacent to a building will be exposed to an unacceptable fire hazard as a result of the design and construction of the building. Although the potential for being killed or injured in a fire cannot be completely eliminated, fire safety in a building can be achieved through proven building design features intended to minimise the risk of harm to people from fire to the greatest extent possible.

Page #34

Designing a structure to ensure minimal risk or to meet a prescribed level of safety from fire is more complex than just the simple consideration of what building materials will be used. Our ability to design ever-more fire resistant structures emphasizes the vital importance architects and engineers face in selecting the proper building materials and fire-resistant assemblies to protect against loss of life, and limit fire impact on the community.

Fire Resistance Assemblies:

PABCO® Gypsum is proud to list hundreds of UL fire tested assemblies shown on the opposite page. All of these assemblies are UL approved, and allow the use of one or more PABCO® products available from our extensive range of gypsum board product line. Each assembly is tested within a controlled laboratory setting, and receives individual engineering evaluations. The following design selection pages present a relative small fraction of the available approved assemblies. Individual designs are prefaced with a brief description and summary. The complete design, and updated information, may be found in the Underwriter Laboratories (UL) Fire Resistant Directory (www.ul.com), the Gypsum Association’s “Fire Resistance Design Manual” (GA-600) (www.gyspum.org), or by contacting PABCO® Gypsum Technical Services. PABCO® Gypsum type X products bear the UL Classification Mark and are covered by UL’s classification and Follow-Up Service. The facing page is a cross reference of appropriate PABCO® Gypsum panel products to use for different UL fire-resistive Designs. Although the systems are arranged herein (as well as the GA-600) in general groupings (i.e. walls and interior partitions, floor-ceilings, roof-ceilings, etc.), the listing of a system in a specific category is not intended to limit its use to that category. However, this shall not be interpreted to imply that vertical systems, such as walls and partitions, are permitted to arbitrarily be used in a horizontal orientation.1 1. Fire Resistance Ratings:

Underwriters Laboratories (UL), ASTM, and numerous building codes use fire-resistant ratings as a measure of fire-containment for varying types of building construction assemblies. In respect to buildings, the fire resistance rating classifies the ability of an assembly to confine and isolate fire within a zone comprised of fire resistance rated walls, ceiling and floor assemblies. These fire-resistance rated assemblies are tested, certified and listed in the directories of accredited Fire Testing Laboratories. The most up-to-date information is available at the fire testing laboratory website or from PABCO® Gypsum Technical Services.

For more information:

• Refer to Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Fire Resistance Directory at www.ul.com. • Refer to the Gypsum Association Fire Resistance Design Manual, publication GA-600. • Contact PABCO® Gypsum Technical Services, or your qualified PABCO® Gypsum Field Representative (please reference the back cover of this publication for contact information).

Abbreviations:
