visits over the Internet. Starting in early 2016, patients can visit with Intermountain clinicians through secure interactive video from home, work, or on the go, and get medical advice and treatment for low-acuity conditions like stuffy and runny noses, sore throat, eye infections, earaches, lower back pain, joint pain, or bronchitis.

Intermountain clinicians through secure interactive video from home, work, or on the go, and get medical advice and treatment for

low-acuity conditions like stuffy and runny noses, sore throat, eye infections, earaches, lower back pain, joint pain, or bronchitis. Intermountain is partnering with telehealth technology company American Well for the Connect Care service. “The new service engages patients and provides a new option that complements traditional healthcare,” said Brent Wallace, MD, Intermountain’s Chief Medical Officer. During a Connect Care visit, a provider will review the patient’s clinical information, speak with and see the patient through HD video, prescribe appropriate medications as needed, and suggest follow-up care. Visits for existing Intermountain patients will be documented in Intermountain Healthcare’s electronic medical record, incorporating that visit into the patient’s continuum of care. Connect Care patients will also receive an email record of their interaction, which they can share with other providers if they choose. Connect Care will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for $49 a visit. This marks the first major expansion of Intermountain’s TeleHealth strategy into patient homes. Eventually, Connect Care will address more conditions and connect patients to primary care physicians and specialists such as dermatologists, psychiatrists, dieticians, and more.

McKay-Dee Hospital officials have been working with Utah Department of Health representatives to investigate a recent hepatitis C infection of a patient who received treatment in the hospital’s Emergency Department. Through the investigation, McKay-Dee and the Department of Health learned that some of the patients treated in McKay-Dee’s ED between June 2013 and November 2014 may have been exposed to hepatitis C genotype 2b. Here are details about what happened and how McKay-Dee responded: McKay-Dee notified each patient who might be at risk by mail. They also notified physicians that some of their patients may get the letter. Most patients who received care in the Emergency Department during that time period aren’t at risk for hepatitis C. While the chance of contracting hepatitis C is low, the hospital is providing a free blood test to those who have been notified. People who have questions can contact the hospital at 801-387-8580 or visit the Utah Department of Health’s web. McKay-Dee’s leaders are being as open and transparent as possible, as far as federal, state, and local laws will allow. Any

individuals who may be involved in the case—including a former employee who’s been mentioned in the media—weren’t identified by the hospital. McKay-Dee Hospital has worked in partnership with the Utah Department of Health, regulatory agencies, and law enforcement in every way to ensure the safety of patients.

Ogden newspaper says: “McKay-Dee acted to protect the public’s health…” An editorial in the Ogden Standard-Examiner praised leaders at McKay-Dee Hospital for working proactively to protect the health of their patients and the community. The paper said: When they found themselves at the center of a health scare last week, officials at Ogden’s McKay-Dee Hospital had two choices: 1) They could keep it quiet, hoping to avoid bad press, or 2) they could share as much information as possible so people understood the risk they faced. They put the community’s well-being first.

with a company called Savvysherpa to develop a post-surgery treatment plan that incorporates a wearable device called the Rx 5 of 12

Navigait. This resource helps patients track their progress and accelerate their recovery. The Rx Navigait is a new activity tracker designed specifically with surgery patients in mind. The device has a sophisticated motion sensor that recognizes a post-surgery patient’s gait and difference in step. The Rx Navigait also offers scheduled prompts that remind patients when and how far they need to walk. “We want to see how the technology improves clinical outcomes and reduces readmissions, complications, and costs,” said Mark Ott, MD, Chief Medical Director for Intermountain’s Central Region. “While our clinical research to prove or disprove the long-term value of Rx Navigait isn’t yet complete, the data are very promising.” Some early findings related to the Rx Navigait: Patients who walk and move more go home faster, which cuts days off their hospital stay and saves thousands of dollars. Patients who meet their movement goals cut their risk of being readmitted to the hospital in half. Patients who participate in the program have a sense of ownership; they feel like they’re in control of their recovery instead of being passive participants. While the program was originally designed to track activity before surgery and 30 days afterwards, about 50 percent of patients continue to participate in the program beyond that time because they see how being active has improved not just their recovery but their general health as well.

Awards and recognition Study: Intermountain ranks among nation’s most innovative healthcare organizations A newly published report called Into the Minds of the C-Suite identified Intermountain Healthcare as one of the top five most innovative healthcare providers in the U.S. It also ranked Intermountain No. 1 in the “Elite Leadership” subcategory. The study, conducted by market research firm peer60, is based on a recent study of 336 C-suite-level healthcare executives from across the nation. It sought to identify the most significant challenges they are facing and who they feel is the most influential and innovative in healthcare today. According to the study, the top five “Most Innovative Healthcare Provider Organizations” are: 1) Mayo Clinic, 2) Kaiser Permanente, 3) Cleveland Clinic, 4) Geisinger Health System, and 5) Intermountain Healthcare. A similar study conducted this year for Intermountain through a different research firm, which also focused on top-level healthcare leaders and key influencers, found virtually the same results. In that study, the same top five organizations were named as “models for innovation.” An abbreviated version of the peer60 report is available here. Intermountain heart ads earn national awards
