This Tech Note describes the steps for establishing Serial communications, via the Wonderware OMRON FINS Gateway I/O Server, to a C200HS PLC. Note Before starting, Wonderware Technical Support recommends you use the OMRON FINS Serial Explorer to verify communication protocol, PLC ID and serial port parameters.

Configuring the OMRON FINS Software 1. Start the FinsGateway Service Control Manager. Verify the CPU Unit and SerialUnit are running. You can also select Property then Automatic startup for both the CPU Unit and SerialUnit.

F IGURE 6. SELECTING ACTIVE PORT 7. Next, start the FINS Network Tester. In the Peer field, enter the Node, Network, and Unit of the PLC (refer to Figures 3 and 5). In the Send Message field, enter 0501. Click the Start button. If communications is successful, then send and receive messages will be displayed as shown in Figure 7. If communications cannot be established, then a Timeout message or an error message will appear in the Comment field. If communications to the PLC is not successful, re-check the FINS Software configuration and cabling.

Configuring a Topic for the Wonderware OMRON FINS Gateway I/O Server Start the OMRON FINS Gateway I/O Server. From the Server menu bar, click on Configure and then select Topic Definition. The Topic Definition dialog box should appear. Click the New button and define your Topic as shown in Figure 8. In this example, Network is 0 (see Figure 3), Node is 1 and Unit is 1 (see Figure 5).

Testing Communications with WWClient 1. Open WWClient. Click Connect from the menu bar if using WWClient V7.0, or click Connections/Create if using WWClient V7, 0, 0, 1 or greater. 2. Enter the following data to connect to the OMRON FINS Gateway I/O server: Application: Enter finsgtwy Topic Name: Enter the topic name created in Figure 8. In this example, we used c200hs. Connection Type: Select DDE or IOT

3. When complete, click Connect then Done. 4. Next, from the WWClient menu bar click on Item . An Item dialog box should appear showing a highlighted connection as shown in Figure 10. In the Item field, enter a valid https://wdnresource.wonderware.com/support/kbcd/html/1/t000885.htm

PLC address. 5. Select the data type in the drop-down list box, in this case an Interger, and click the AdviseEx button.

F IGURE 10. ITEM DIALOG BOX 6. In the WWClient window, you should now see a value to the right of the item name. Notice the hex value, 0x00c0, at the end of the item name line. This value indicates good data quality. Any other value indicates bad data quality. The WWLogger will display more detailed information concerning a communications failure.
