manage conflict situations. At the completion of the workshop participants will have an awareness of the role of conflict in the workplace; understanding of their responses to conflict situations; appreciation of how others respond to conflict; and opportunity to develop strategies to effectively manage conflict CRNE Preparation Workshop Christine Reick-Buckley The CRNE® Mini Review offers tremendous value to nursing students who will be writing the CRNE as well as nursing students who are curious about the registration exam and will be writing it in the future. The review runs for 2 hours, and begins with information on scheduling your test, how the test is scored, helpful hints for passing the CRNE®, fundamental examination concepts, the development process and the makeup of the exam. The review covers general test preparation guidelines and study tips. While most of this information is contained in the CRNE Prep Guide, the information will be expanded upon as an orientation to the Prep Guide and Readiness/Predictor Test. Also, it will be an opportunity to ask questions as well as meet others who are planning to write the CRNE. A quiz at the end of the 2 hour review will give you the opportunity to validate your learning and practice of CRNE®-type questions Nursing the Future Workshop Kandis Harris & Heather Dickie Transition To and Within Practice The education of the nursing graduate of today is a dynamic process that tries to balance the desire to advance professional concepts and ideals while anticipating the work-role realities new graduates face when entering professional practice for the first time. The space between the educational ideal and the practice reality can be alarming and exhausting for the new graduate. This workshop will focus on the experience of making the transition to professional practice. Two newly graduated nurses from the leadership team of Nursing The Future will walk participants through the stages of transition, sharing their poignant and sometimes humorous stories about ‘being new’ in a very established profession. The leaders will encourage participants to ‘anticipate’ what the actual experience of professional role transition entails. The workshop format will assist attendees to work through each stage of that first year, creating strategies that can facilitate a more positive transition for new nurses and building a more productive and ‘healthier’ workplace where everyone wants to be! Student Fair & Poster Presentation Networking Break National Team Debate Diversity in Nursing As nursing students, it is never too early to advocate for change and challenge the present and future state of healthcare in Canada – the 2011 CNSA National Team will address the challenges of the contemporary nursing student, how they may be effective in the promotion of change, integration into an “old

Keynote: Dr. Judy Boychuk Duchscher Like the Fixed Point of a Compass…..Navigating Your Career with Purpose I have been a nurse for over 30 years and if there is one thing I have learned it is that it matters less WHAT you do as HOW and WHY you do it. Those individuals whose lives are built on 'purpose' rather than destination or outcome are not only happier individuals, but they contribute to creating something more substantial in the end. This professional journey you have embarked on is a roller-coaster ride. You can expect to be 'shaken up' along the way and at times all you will be able to do is 'hold on for dear life'. There will be times when you feel as though it simply couldn't get any better than this…..and times when the next pit stop is AFTER you are set to run out of gas. My life has been all of these and the only thing that has kept my nose above the water line have been the transforming experiences I will share with you during this session. I live my life now with a strong sense of purpose, grounded in the joy and sorrow of my experiences with patients, families and colleagues, all coconstructors of who I am personally and professionally. During the 101-day long battle for his life in McMaster Children’s Hospital Pediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU), Will’s family developed a close and long-lasting bond with the nurses assigned to Will’s care. As a nurse educator, Kirsten will share her unique insights and experiences into the significant role nurses have as “heroes” to a family in crisis. Making the News Workshop Ken Marciniec & Mary Gazze Nursing students are on the front lines of health care and have many important stories to tell. Yet no one has the money to hire a big communications firm. Whether it’s through a campus newspaper, local radio station or even a blog, getting your message out can mean the difference between a successful event or a campaign that goes unnoticed. This workshop will provide a crash course on how the media works, advice on how to work most effectively with journalists and simple, reliable techniques for preparing your message to make
