We are now known throughout the region for our staff and volunteers who go the extra mile to ensure that each patient gets exactly the care he or she needs. As Board Chair, I have the privilege of working with my extraordinary fellow board members to ensure that this organization is well-managed, responsive, and fiscally sound. I’d like to thank each of them for their leadership. It has been our pleasure to serve alongside former board member and the most recent winner of the Lotus Award, Kathryn Breaux, who has so generously shared her talent, time, and financial support with this organization for so many years. We are also immensely grateful for the support of our entire community. I’d particularly like to acknowledge the generosity of the Sequoia Healthcare District, Mission Hospice Auxiliary, Mills-Peninsula Health Services, and Peninsula Health Care District. Their gifts, along with those from more than a thousand individuals, corporations, and foundations, allow Mission Hospice to offer our special kind of compassion and care to people when they most need it.

Their compelling stories show how our team-based care is changing lives for patients and families throughout San Mateo County and northern Santa Clara County. Since our nonprofit was founded in 1979, we have helped more than 10,000 people spend their final months in comfort and dignity. We are now providing care for more than 350 patients and families every day. And we remain committed to caring for everyone in need, regardless of their insurance or ability to pay. This year, thanks to our ongoing capital campaign, we opened the county’s only hospice house. Mission House offers a place for patients in the last weeks of life who need intensive care that cannot be provided at home. The house also offers a safety net for terminally ill patients whose caregivers need a few days of respite. Your support is the key to ensuring that everyone in our community has access to this kind of compassionate care. Care and compassion Mission Hospice & Home Care provides physical, emotional, and spiritual support to patients facing cancer, cardiac and lung disease, and other life-limiting illnesses, offering the compassionate care they need to spend their final months in comfort. In 2015, we provided Hospice, Advanced Care (palliative home care), and Transitions support for a record 1,368 patients in San Mateo County and northern Santa Clara County. We also opened Mission House, a place for people who need intensive hospice care that cannot be provided at home. Our individualized, quality care exceeds the levels covered by Medicare and private insurance, and contributions from the community make up the difference.

Kevin Gilmore Accounting for care Kevin Gilmore is the first person to say that he’s a numbers guy. A licensed CPA who recently completed his 36th tax season, he’s spent his entire career working with audits and balance sheets. So it’s not surprising that numbers attracted Kevin to Mission Hospice. In 2008, Kevin learned of an opportunity to help our organization with accounting, and he saw this as “a chance to get connected with the community.” He was already pretty well connected to the community. A native San Franciscan, he met his future wife, Robin, at a volleyball tournament when she was on the college team at USF. They continued to play volleyball together while raising their three children, and spent many years coaching their volleyball teams. Today, when he’s not working, he’s often on the golf links, or fly fishing near their family home in the Sierra foothills. Kevin began his career with a firm in South San Francisco. Nearly 12 years ago, he founded Gilmore & Associates in San Mateo, specializing in financial services for construction companies, professional service firms, and nonprofits. While Kevin had spent years working closely with his corporation’s nonprofit clients, he’d never been on a board before he joined Mission Hospice. Smiling, he says, “this was my chance to be on the other side.” Together with his co-Treasurer Michael Teuschel, Kevin now works closely with our financial and administrative staff on budgeting and reporting procedures, tax returns, and our annual audit. Quiet and soft-spoken, he’s the first to admit that he didn’t know much about hospice when he first got involved with the organization. “My mom is a nurse,” he explains. “I grew up hearing her stories of people dying in the hospital, plugged into machines and with tubes and wires everywhere, and she made it clear to me that she didn’t want that.”

“But all I knew about hospice,” he continues, “is that it helps people die in a peaceful way, and helps families cope. I didn’t know much more than that.” Today, after eight years of volunteer service on our board – and personal experience with hospice care in his own family – Kevin is a true believer. In early 2015, Robin’s mother was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor. When a Mission Hospice nurse visited her in the hospital and explained that hospice

care meant she could go home with Robin and Kevin, she responded, “Do I really get to do this? It’s like a gift.” Reflecting on the time this gave them together as a family, Kevin agrees that it was a gift – for all of them. “As soon as people have the experience of hospice care,” he says, “they understand the value.” He’s happy to use his professional expertise to support this experience for other patients and families. “As important as the numbers are to me, I know that’s not the focus of the medical staff – they need to focus on the patients,” he says. “My role as a board member is to make sure the business is healthy so we can continue to serve people in the future.”

If you hear his southern drawl in the hallway of our offices, you’re pretty likely to hear it followed by his joyful laugh. Gary recently led the staff through a conversion to a new electronic health record (EHR) system. This is a massive undertaking, requiring extensive training across all of our clinical disciplines, tracking patient data across old and new systems simultaneously, and answering countless questions from staff – all while ensuring compliance with best practices and regulations.

As a professional educator with years of experience as a nurse, he’s now a teacher to the nurses. Gary coordinates training for our clinical staff while also ensuring our agency’s compliance with various policies and procedures. Indeed, the role seems to fit Gary perfectly – just like the Hawaiian shirts he’s known for wearing in the office. Gary says his childhood dream was to become a nurse. But life had other plans for him, and with a degree in business, he had a long and successful career in corporate training. In his 40s, he realized that he could revisit his childhood dream. He and his wife Terri moved to California so Gary could go back to school. Six years later, he graduated with RN, BSN, and PHN degrees. He took to hospice nursing immediately. “It’s such a privilege to be invited into someone’s life at such an intimate and spiritual time,” he says. 4

This is the kind of task that could make ordinary people grumpy, but Gary’s positive attitude prevented that. “I know how important it is for people to have a good experience when they’re learning something, or they’re not going to learn it.” Using the new EHR system on iPads, our care teams now have the ability to see patient records in real time – something that has been shown to dramatically increase charting accuracy and, as a result, quality of patient care. Gary is proud that Mission Hospice has been repeatedly certified by the Joint Commission, something that means our procedures exceed those required by Medicare. “It’s just an amazing feeling to be able to ease someone’s suffering and help them have a peaceful ending,” says Gary. “It encompasses everything that God wants us to be, including unconditional love. Love covers everything.”

Tom Flahavan The life of the party Tom Flahavan was a outgoing, charismatic man who loved to sing and dance. As his wife Rose says, “he was the life of the party. Everybody loved him.” Married in 1963, the two native San Franciscans enjoyed dancing, travelling, and raising their five children in Millbrae. Tom had a long and successful career with Pacific Bell and the San Francisco Dept. of Electricity. It was a huge change when this gregarious, active man started slowing down and stumbling. He was eventually diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and gradually withdrew, becoming non-communicative. As his physical struggles became more severe, he moved into a residential care facility in Millbrae. It was about this time that Rose ran into her acquaintance Libby Hagman, a Mission Hospice Outreach Nurse, who knew that although Tom didn’t quality for hospice, our free Transitions program could help the whole family. Libby, along with Social Worker Anthony Lupian, formally evaluated Tom, and admitted him into Transitions right away. Libby, an RN, accompanied Rose to appointments with Tom’s personal physician, and helped her understand options for treatment. Anthony visited both Tom and Rose regularly, providing emotional support and counseling. Anthony explains, “Parkinson’s is a difficult disease, for both the patient and the family. It can be hard to predict whether someone is going to have a good day or a bad day. Tom fluctuated a lot, and part of my job was to answer Rose’s questions, and help her figure out how to cope with that.” After a brief hospitalization, Tom became eligible for hospice care. Although his paperwork moved him into a different program, his Mission Hospice care team stayed with him, building on their existing

relationships. “It was a perfect opportunity to care for the entire family as Tom’s disease progressed,” says Libby. Anthony explains, “we’d started the conversation about hospice very early, so when it came time for that, Rose and her children understood what it meant.” Tom was in hospice care for nine months. His Case Manager, RN Ellen Chao, worked closely with Anthony – and in coordination with Wilma and the rest of the staff at Millbrae Family Care Home – to be sure that Tom was supported physically and emotionally. Throughout Tom’s journey, the team also stayed by Rose’s side. Spiritual Counselor Rachel Rosenberg prayed with Rose’s bible study group. And Rose says that her meetings with Anthony kept her going. “Anthony was a huge help. He helped me deal with things when I didn’t know which way to go. I knew I wasn’t alone with all of this.” When Tom died, he and Rose had been married 52 years. Rose says that while she had always been the quiet opposite of her vivacious husband, after his illness quieted him, she came into her own. “I am as busy as I have ever been,” she says. Spirited and energetic, Rose is an avid member of the Millbrae Racquet Club and enjoys entertaining in her Millbrae home. Perhaps she is honoring Tom’s legacy – continuing his tradition by being the life of the party.
