NEW ZEALAND PONY CLUBS ASSOCIATION INC. COACHING BACKGROUND The New Zealand Pony Clubs Association (NZPCA) began in 1946 as a branch of ‘The Pony Club’ based in England. It is the only organization in New Zealand with a historic comprehensive programme to teach children to ride and care for their ponies. From the onset, the NZPCA have had an appointed group of National Coaches with British Horse Society [BHS] qualifications, who are responsible for setting and maintaining the standards for certificates from D, D+,C, C+, B, H and A level, and training coaches and examiners at each level throughout New Zealand. Three Pony Club Manuals were written for New Zealander’s by two National Coaches, Suzanne Dickens and Elaine Knox Thompson. Circulation of these extends to Australia, U.S.A. Canada and South Africa. More recently these manuals have been updated by Kevin Lawrence – Manual 2 in 2007, Manual 1 in 2009, and a new Manual 3 in 2011. The Pony Club Manuals: Manual 1 for D, D+ and C riders Manual 2 for C+, B, H and A riders Manual 3 for Coaches The National Pony Club Association recognized the need for coaches to increase their knowledge and confidence in teaching and to plan lessons so that their coaching was safe, progressive, effective and enjoyable. To this purpose the Eqvalan Instructors Training Programme [EITP] was implemented in 1991. [Renamed Equestrian Coaches Training Programme, ECTP in 2004]. This correspondence type programme with practical assignments and assessments at each certificate level, was again written by Suzanne Dickens and Elaine KnoxThompson, with input from the other National Coaches, mainly Kay Hogan and Jennifer Howard. Since 1990 the NZPCA and Equestrian Sports NZ [ESNZ] have worked together with the Equine Industry Training Organisation [EITO] formulating equine unit standards towards National Certificate in Education Authority [NCEA] qualifications. In 2003, NZPCA formed a company called Equine eLearning [EeL], which delivers the knowledge component of Equine Unit Standards to secondary school pupils via the Internet. Units include those which give credits towards the following National Certificates in Equine – Introductory Skills, Stable Practice (Sport Horse), Care and Handling, Preliminary Coach, Coach (Level 4) Sport Horse Attendant, Sport Horse Competitor. The Client base has extended beyond secondary school students to people of all ages. The NZPCA and ESNZ have worked together to ensure there is a seamless coaching strategy for all Equestrian Coaches. To this purpose Cross Crediting otherwise referred to as RPL [Recognition of Prior Learning] has been implemented between the two programmes.

THE NZPCA EQUESTRIAN COACHES TRAINING PROGRAMME [ECTP]: The NZPCA Equestrian Coaches Training Programme [ECTP] consists of six levels corresponding with Pony Club Certificates. Each level involves attendance at Coaches course, completing written correspondence units which have practical assignments, and passing the practical teaching assessments.
Pony Club Certificate Levels: D Teaching riders the basics in riding and handling a pony, neither cantering nor jumping is required. Age usually 8 – 9 yrs D+
To work towards a secure seat on the flat and over small jumps to 50cm. Increasing knowledge and confidence in pony care. Age usually 9 – 10 years
C To be more independent, in control of the pony at all times, and have a basic understanding of pony care. Jump 65cm. Age usually 11 12yrs C+ To become active all round riders with ability to apply aids effectively and have a greater understanding of pony care. Jump 80cm. Age usually 12 – 13yrs B To be capable of riding any well mannered horse and assess results. To have more knowledge on conditioning and be able to look after stabled horses. Jump 95cm. Age usually 14 – 15 yrs H To be more efficient in all aspects of Horse management. Age 16yrs + A To be an educated horse person able to ride with confidence on the flat and over fences. Able to assess horses potential and how to improve it’s way of going. Jump 1.10m. Age 16yrs + At C+ level there is an option called ‘Coaching the Coaches’ unit. Once this unit has been passed and several other criteria completed as listed in the “Criteria for Coaching Coaches”, ECTP C+ level coaches may take D level Coaches courses. D level Coaches courses teach new Coaches how to teach to D Certificate level Pony Club riders. At B level there is the option with similar associated criteria that enables coaches to qualify to take C level coaching courses. The ‘coaching to coach’ component identifies our programme as self perpetuating, and is the reason the NZPCA cannot ‘cross credit’ in entirety, to other Equestrian Coaching Programmes. The Cross Crediting process recognises prior learning and allows suitably qualified Coaches after meeting the specified criteria to join the programme at a higher level All Coaches applying for cross crediting are required to furnish a record of learning achieved and/or proof of their qualification gained.
Cross crediting BHS, NZQA and ESNZ coaching qualifications to NZPCA Equestrian Coaches Training Programme (ECTP): On meeting specified requirements:
1. Community Coach gained prior to and including 1999, BHSAI, BHSIT and BHS Preliminary Teaching prior to and including 1994: receive C Level Coaches badge and certificate and enroll on the ECTP at C+ level 2. BHSAI, BHSIT and BHS Preliminary Teaching since 1994: NZQA Community Coach, NZQA Preliminary Coach and ESNZ Introductory Coach gained since 1999, NZQA Grade 1 Coach, and above receive C+ Level Coaches badge and certificate and enroll on the ECTP at B level 3.
