COACHING AND MENTORING 3-Day Short Course

Introduction: An important feature of the organisation of today is that there are fewer management layers, which must then emphasise individual responsibility. Successful delegation and empowerment relies on effective coaching and mentoring of senior and middle-level employees. Coaching and mentoring must then used to develop management and leadership in the organisation; it supports and reinforces training and skills development; it increases the productivity of managers and promotes teamwork and sound working relationships; it contributes to high levels of job satisfaction and helps organisations in general to achieve their strategic objectives.

Accreditation: This 6-credit HEQF (2007) level eight short course covers knowledge of a formal postgraduate programme, approved and quality controlled as required by the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) and the Higher Education Qualification Committee (HEQC).

Target Group: All senior and middle managers of national, provincial and local government departments and public sector organisations and institutions.

Course Objectives and Outcomes: The overarching objective of this course is to provide participants with strategies to deal with, and manage coaching and mentoring within the context of public sector organisations:

The outline and learning outcomes for this 3-day training programme are as follows: 

Methods and styles of coaching to improve individual performance;



The relationship between coaching and mentoring and other performance management techniques;



The coaching process and skills;



Defining mentoring and the mentoring role;



Identifying potential mentors and matching the partners;

Using skills tools and techniques for successful implementation;



The life-cycle of the coaching and mentoring relationship;



Dealing with potential problems faced by the coach or mentor;



Skills, tools and models to enhance each phase of coaching and mentoring;



Coaching and mentoring – a link to personal leadership and an integrated approach to people development;



Coaching and mentoring vs. management - the difference; and



Monitoring the process of coaching and mentoring for success.

Methodology: The methodology utilised in the presentation of this course will be based primarily on adult learning principles that include: 

Facilitation and lectures combined with discussion groups;



A greater involvement of the learners within the learning process by making use of interactive training exercises, case-studies, role plays and group-work;



The integration of the prior learning and experiences of participants within the learning process; and



A specific emphasis on personal development and growth through quality learning experiences.

Assessments: Participants will be required to submit to the following assessment: 

In-course group work of basic proficiency to be determined by the course facilitator(s) (40% of the course mark); and



An assignment to be submitted 30 days after the conclusion of the course (60% of the course mark).

Individual Assignment: 

Reflect on all the various learning outcomes (activities) of the course and find one that particularly interests you or one that will make a significant difference in your work environment;



Try this activity or process out in your work environment;



Write a five-page report on what you decided to do, how it worked out and what the lessons are that you have learned;



Hand this assignment in on: ____________________________

Please note that the policy on submission of assignments for all Executive Development Programmes specifically states that assignments must be submitted one calendar month after completion of the particular programme.

Late submission of assignments will be accepted, subject to the following directive: In the light of the accreditation requirements, as well as the Short Course Policy of Stellenbosch University, a late submission of an assignment will be accepted within two weeks after the above submission date, subject to a 5% penalty per week. This penalty will not be applied if the comprehensive written request for the extension is accompanied by a letter from the manager of the participant or a medical certificate, and is accepted after consideration by the Project Manager and/or the Programme Head: Executive Programmes of the School of Public Management and Planning.

Thereafter, no further submission or assessment will be permitted
