Push the pencil into the sharpener as far as possible. d. Crank with the right hand while holding the pencil with the left hand. e. Turn the crank several times in a circular motion, away from self. f. Remove the pencil to determine if it is sharp. g. Repeat the process, if necessary.

ADAPTATION: Place a thin strip of masking tape under the hole where the pencil is to be inserted. Use a red magic marker to draw circle around the pencil, indicating the depth to which the pencil should be inserted into the hole of the sharpener. Place a piece of masking tape around the body of the sharpener with arrows pointing upward, indicating the direction to turn the handle. Proceed through the task analysis steps, giving special instructions to position the pencil in the correct hole (using the visual cue under the hole), to insert the pencil all the way into the hole (by making sure the red circle on the pencil is just visible), and to turn the handle in the direction of the arrows. Guide the students through the steps, giving verbal and tactile cues only as necessary. 2. ----------------------------------------------------------RESOURCES/MATERIALS ----------------------------------------------------------Pencil Manual sharpener Electric sharpener

E-9

Position the large opening of the cylinder on the gears of the sharpener and push the cylinder up until the grooves of the two pieces match. e. Turn the cylinder away from self to tighten.

ADAPTATION: If the students experience difficulty in steps a and b, guide the students’ hands through the motions. If difficulty persists, draw a red arrow on the sharpener pointing in the direction that it should be turned. If difficulty persists in steps d and e, draw a blue arrow on the sharpener pointing in the direction that it should be turned. 2.

Student will seal envelopes.

Demonstration/instruction should include the following steps: 1.

2. 3. 4.

5. 6.

Place envelopes in a stack with the backside facing up so that the flap containing the glue is at the top. Pick up the envelope and place it on the table. Slightly moisten a sponge with water. Place the sponge tip on the left corner of the flap, move up along the outside edge of the flap to the center point and then down to the right corner. Press the flap against the envelope, moving from left to right. Place the sealed envelope in a stack or box.

NOTE: Insert a step between 2 and 3, 6 and 7, if sealing clasp envelopes, to incorporate opening and closing clasps. Be sure to check with the office or organization to see if they will have the envelopes sealed by the post office or if the students should do it. If the mail out is a bulk mailing, this will be very important.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------OBJECTIVE TEACHING ACTIVITIES -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1.

Student will collate papers.

1.

2.

Give the students two stacks of paper and stapler. Instruct them to “collate the papers” according to the following process: a. Pick up one sheet of paper from the first stack and transfer to the opposite hand. b. Pick up one sheet of paper from the second stack and place it under the first sheet so that the left corners march. c. Place the left-hand corners of the two papers under the arm of the stapler. d. Use the other hand and push down on the stapler so that it staples the papers together. e. Remove the papers and stack to the side. Collating the school newspaper or newsletter is a functional activity that offers practice. Offer to collate test papers for teachers and to provide assistance in the school office when needed.

NOTE: It is easier to collate by starting with the last page and stacking on top so that the pages are visible throughout the task. Always have the students work from left to right. This is an additional way to teach the movement needed for reading and writing.

Student will apply pressure-sensitive labels on envelopes.

1.

Demonstration/instruction should include the following steps: a. Arrange envelopes so that they are face up, ensuring that flaps are at the top on the underneath side. b. Get one envelope and place it on the table. c. Remove the label from the sheet, beginning in the upper left-hand corner of the page, by grasping one corner of each label and pulling it away from the sheet. d. Position the label over the center of the envelope, making sure the printing is right side up. e. Place the label on the envelope and rub back and forth across the label. Be sure to put the label on straight, with no wrinkles. f. Place the envelope in a completed stack or box.

ADAPTATIONS: Using a magic marker, mark off a rectangular area approximately 1 1/2 times the size of the label on the front of the envelopes. Proceed through steps d through 3 (above). Emphasize that the label is to go “right side up” inside the marked rectangle. Gradually fade out visual cues. Measure the paper on the ends of the box so that it will fold down over the end. Trim, if necessary. f. Fold the bottom end in a triangle and tape to the box. g. Repeat the process on the top. h. Secure both ends of the box in this manner Take a length of string or ribbon and tell the students to wrap it around the box horizontally two or three times. Be sure to explain that the cut end should be held securely and should be long enough to tie, eventually. Have the student to wrap the box vertically two or three times. Demonstrate slowly so that the students can see how to change the direction of the string without losing its tension. Demonstrate how to tie a knot with the ends of the string.
