GIVE PRAISE TO GOD This hymn text was written in 1930 by the pastor of the Riverside Church in New York City, Harry Emerson Fosdick. You will notice that the 3rd verse contains a line that defines greed. In this verse we ask God to “shame our wanton selfish gladness, rich in things and poor in soul.”

This arrangement of the hymn tune was commissioned for the National Service of Thanksgiving on June 5, 2012, at St. Paul’s Cathedral celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee.

**Hymn of Praise God of Grace and God of Glory CWM RHONDDA/ Page 12 arr. Simon Johnson Lighting of the Candles Placement of the Bible Prayer of Confession (in unison) Merciful God, the world we live in urges us to live a grasping life, never satisfied or contented. We fear that contentment will make us lazy. We allow healthy ambition to become greed. We confess that in our anxiety we acquire and keep what we neither need nor truly want. Forgive us and grant to us a contented soul. Teach us to live with open hands, eager to give, at rest in your abundant grace. Begin this work among us now as we continue to offer our silent confessions . . . Assurance of God’s Forgiveness *Congregational Response Come Thou Fount of Every BlessingNETTLETON O to grace how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be; Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Here’s my heart: O, take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above. Pastoral Prayer and Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. *Those who are able, please stand. **Ushers will seat latecomers at this time.

Offering Our Gifts O Be Joyful in the Lord John Rutter The Chancel Choir and Brass O Be Joyful was written by John Rutter in 1984, in honor of his friend Gordon McMillan, director of music at the First United Methodist Church of Lubbock, Texas.

O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: Serve the Lord with gladness, And come before His presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord He is God: It is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. O go your way into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful unto Him, and speak good of His Name. For the Lord is gracious, His mercy is everlasting: And His truth endureth from generation to generation. O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: Glory be to the Father; Glory be to the Son And to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: World without end. Amen. *Hymn of Thanksgiving Holy, Holy, Holy NICAEA Holy, holy, holy Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee! Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Amen.

God’s Word Read and Proclaimed

John Rutter wrote the simple words and music for Look at the World as a song of thanksgiving, a recognition that every good and perfect thing in the world comes from God.

Luke 12:13-21(pew Bible, page 1617) Greed: Successful FailureVic Pentz Senior Pastor Presentation of Commitments *Commitment Anthem Look at the World John Rutter The Chancel Choir

Look at the world, ev’rything all around us: Look at the world, and marvel ev’ry day. Look at the world: so many joys and wonders, So many miracles along our way. Refrain: Praise to Thee, O Lord, for all creation, Give us thankful hearts, that we may see: All the gifts we share, and ev’ry blessing, All things come of Thee. Look at the earth bringing forth fruit and flower; Look at the sky, the sunshine and the rain; Look at the hills, look at the tress and mountains, Valley and flowing river, field and plain: (Refrain) Think of the spring, think of the warmth of summer Bringing the harvest before the winter’s cold. Ev’rything grows, ev’rything has a season, Till it is gathered to the Father’s fold: (Refrain) Ev’ry good gift, all that we need and cherish Comes from the Lord in token of His love; We are His hands, stewards of all his bounty; His is the earth, and His the heav’ns above: (Refrain)

The Contented Soul: The Art of Savoring Life by Lisa Graham McMinn Winner of a 2006 Chicago Book Clinic Award! Is your life characterized more by long, leisurely walks or by frantic sprints to get the kids to school, rush to work, beat out other cars in traffic so you can pick the kids up on time and grab dinner before your seven o’clock meeting? Our culture teaches that possessions equal success and busyness equals importance and we have believed the lie. In The Contented Soul, sociologist Lisa Graham McMinn invites us to slow down, be still and learn the art of savoring life. Available in the Peachtree Bookstore and the Williams Center.
