The Townscape – Inviting, Historical and Visionary Munich combines various epochs of style into a stunning mix of historical and visionary architecture.

The city owes its generous architecture to the reign of King Ludwig I. Its townscape is marked by broad avenues and the contrast between Classicistic restraint and Baroque profusion. Daring creativity and innovation have placed new architectural accents all over the city. The world-renowned tent roof, the landmark of the Olympic Park, enthralls spectators even four decades after its construction. The Allianz Arena is regarded as Germany’s most beautiful and thrilling soccer stadium. The recently opened BMW Welt is a milestone of dynamic architecture. The downtown area nevertheless presents a clear, delightful and charming image marked by the distinctive feature of the Frauenkirche church whose towers rise above the roofs of the city.

05

The Perfect Place for Business With respect to trade, industry, technology and research Munich assumes a top position within Europe. And for good reason...

Many global players have chosen Munich as their headquarters. The city of automotive industry, banks, biotechnology, health care, information technologies, media and patent management, publishing as well as insurances provides an optimal mix of science, research and technology. Here future-oriented, successful corporations can offer their employees more than just a place of work: a service-minded, tolerant society and a life in a safe city with outstanding leisure-time opportunities.

06

Live and Let Live Munich’s appeal and success are closely linked to joy of life, cosiness and a cosmopolitan mindset. This is THE place for gourmets, night revelers and party animals.

„Eating and drinking keeps body and soul together“. In Munich this old proverb still holds good today. You will find cosy Bavarian inns, international cuisine, gourmet restaurants as well as our world-famous beer gardens, where people of all ages, families, single persons and guests from all over the world get together under shady chestnut trees and enjoy a mug of freshly tapped beer. Shopping in Munich is a particular pleasure. Strolling along the extravagant Maximilianstrasse and Theatinerstrasse you quickly reach the pedestrian mall where department stores and shops offer their select goods. Trendy and fancy merchandise is found, for example, in the Gärtnerplatz and Glockenbach quarters; a variety of souvenirs is available at Platzl near Hofbräuhaus; culinary treats from all over the world are best purchased downtown at Viktualienmarkt. Pre- and Post-Convention Tours Munich is the ideal starting point for tours to the surrounding area.

Neuschwanstein Castle – Linderhof Castle The most famous heritage of King Ludwig II of Bavaria is the “Fairytale Castle“ of Neuschwanstein. The fascinating external design and the interior architecture reflect the style of German Romanticism of the early 13th century. Linderhof Castle is the only castle of King Ludwig II that was completed during his lifetime. In front of the castle – with Rococo decoration in the interior – expands a huge terraced garden culminating in a round temple “Temple of Venus“.

Garmisch – Zugspitze – Mittenwald The health resort Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a renowned metropolis for winter sports. Canyons of wild brooks (Höllental and Partnachklamm gulches) are typical for the region. The Zugspitze Mountain with a height of 2,966 meters offers a magnificent view. Nestled between the mountain ranges of Karwendel and Wettersteingebirge is one of the most beautiful Bavarian alpine towns: Mittenwald – home of the art of violin making.

16

Herrenchiemsee Castle – Chiemsee Bavaria‘s largest lake is Chiemsee. It invites guests for a boat trip to the two islands Frauenchiemsee and Herrenchiemsee. To the south unfolds the mountain ridge of the Chiemgau Alps with the dreamy town of Reit im Winkl nestled in its midst. The fairytale king – King Ludwig II – realised his dream of a second Versailles with Herrenchiemsee Castle. Although only part of the planned facilities were completed the castle and gardens are of imperial size. The showpiece is the Hall of Mirrors which even surpasses its Versailles counterpart.

Berchtesgaden – Lake Königssee The Augustine canons’ convent Berchtesgaden was founded in 1080. Old patrician houses, the castle and the convent church St. Peter and John characterise the old town centre. The salt mine is the most important access to the large vein of salt located between Berchtesgaden and Hallein. The landmark of the emerald green Lake Königssee is the Baroque church St. Bartholomä. The main attraction of the boat ride is the echo of the horn reflected by the 1,800 m high eastern wall of Watzmann Mountain.

Rottenbuch – Oberammergau – Ettal Monastery The landmark of Rottenbuch is the monastery founded in 1073 with the monastic church of the former Augustine canons‘ convent „Birth of Mary“. The Gothic basilica from the 15th century was turned into a Baroque church by the Wessobrunn artists in 1740. Oberammergau – the school building of today’s state college for wood sculptors and carvers is located in this hub of woodcarving. The town centre is characterised by Lüftlmalerei, an old Bavarian term for the facade paintings that have been executed using the fresco technique since the middle of the 18th century. © Ammergauer Alpen GmbH, Oberammergau Tourismus

While the exterior looks plain in comparison with other surrounding buildings, the interior of the Old Town Hall has been touted as a masterpiece of medieval design. It boasts a beautiful barrel-vaulted timber roof with handsome decorative beams and golden stars. A frieze of the town’s coat of arms was installed in 1478.
