It is hard to believe that November has already arrived! The children certainly had great time learning about fall, Harvest, and of course celebrating Halloween last month. Be sure to take time to read your child’s classroom lesson plans each week to find out what your child will be learning and experiencing each week. Don’t forget Skip-a-long will be closed November 24 & 25 in observation of Thanksgiving. Thank you to all of you who are participating in our annual fall fundraiser! We appreciate your support. The orders and money are due to the office on November 3rd. The items will be in on November 17th for you to pick up in the afternoon. You will receive more details as the date gets closer. Many parents ask us what they can do to help their children succeed in school. You don’t need to buy a lot of special toys or equipment to turn your child into a successful student. The best thing you can do is to take time to play with your child, read wonderful books together, and talk as you go about your normal, everyday household chores. You are your child’s first teacher and most important teacher. The way you talk with your child makes a big difference in how your child thinks and feels and the kind of person your child will become. If we can work together and do some of the same things at school and at home, your child will benefit in many ways. Enjoy the month! Julie Allen Director

Mental Health Corner with Katrina It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is right around the corner! As the gift giving tradition approaches, I wanted to share with you an excerpt from the Kids Health organization regarding toy safety guidelines for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Toys are supposed to be fun and are an important part of any child's development. But each year, scores of kids are treated in hospital emergency rooms for toy-related injuries. Guidelines published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission can help you make good buying decisions https://www.cpsc.gov/ 

Avoid toys with sharp points and edges.

Put toys intended for older kids out of reach of babies and toddlers.

Children love to pull apart toys, so choose sturdy toys that don't have moving parts that can easily come off.

Buy age-appropriate toys. Read the label, and if it's not recommended for children under a certain age, then don't buy it for your baby. Toys are determined by safety factors, not intelligence or maturity.

Search for toys that are washable or include the words non-toxic, since so many toys end up in baby’s mouth.

Reduce choking risk by skipping any games that include parts that are smaller than 1.75 inches in diameter, such as marbles, balls, coins, for babies and toddlers. A general rule: Any object that can fit into an empty toilet paper roll is a choking hazard and should be out of reach. Toys stuffed with any kind of beans or pellets should be avoided, too, because a baby can choke or suffocate if any of those pellets were to spill out of the toy and end up in your baby’s mouth.

Battery operated toys should have battery cases that secure with screws so that kids cannot pry them open. Batteries and battery fluid pose serious risks, including choking, internal bleeding and chemical burns.

Avoid toy guns or other toys that shoot objects. Even the simplest versions that shoot plastic objects can cause eye injuries and present choking hazards.

Beware of toy chests and toy storage containers. They can pinch little fingers and a child can climb in, get trapped, and suffocate.

Avoid crib toys that have ribbons, ropes, cords, wires, or anything else hanging from them that could strangle your baby. As a general rule, remove all toys from your baby’s crib when she/he is sleeping.

Hello from the Tigers Wow this year is flying by!! Tigers have been busy with the hustle and bustle of school and the work that comes with it. We have now started the Outreach Girl Scouts program which is Mondays from 330-430. The girls are broke down into two groups between Tigers and Pumas. The boys are still participating in the Boy Scouts Outreach program as well they meet every other Tuesday from 330-430. Please be sure that your child is here for those programs. We have been working on the concepts of manners, and respect, with that the children have been reading out loud to the group during large group time. We continue to have trivia questions sometimes they are related to our theme other times they are just fun random trivia questions. Our favorite one that the children struggled with was “what is the name of all seven dwarfs from Snow white and the Seven dwarfs.” DO you know?

Allergies in Children Signs and Symptoms

Page 6 Happy Skip-a-Long Anniversary to:

Itching, hives, redness or swelling. Swelling of lips or tongue. Shortness of breath. Coughing or wheezing. Weak, dizzy, passing out

Why is it important to know these signs and symptoms?

Anaphylaxis is unpredictable—a mild allergic reaction one time can be life-threatening or severe the next. For example, someone who has a peanut allergy may accidentally eat a peanut and feel tingling lips and watery eyes that eventually go away. However, if the same person is accidentally exposed to a peanut on a different occasion, it could cause difficulty breathing, weak pulse, shortness of breath, fainting and hives that may quickly become lifethreatening. Both are instances of anaphylaxis, but the severity, progression, symptoms and duration of the symptoms are inconsistent and unpredictable.

Vigilance is essential

Because of this unpredictability, it’s crucial for parents and caregivers of children living with potentially life-threatening, or severe, allergies—as well as adults with severe allergies—to be vigilant about any type of allergic reaction ranging from mild to severe. Talk to a healthcare professional about how to identify the signs and symptoms of a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
