Jesus and his disciples went on their way. Jesus came to a village where a woman named Martha lived. She welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary. Mary sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was busy with all the things that had to be done. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, my sister has left me to do all the work by myself. Don’t you care? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered. “You are worried and upset about many things. But only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better. And it will not be taken away from her.” ...A man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived. ...So the sisters sent a message to Jesus. “Lord,” they told him, “the one you loved is sick.” ...But after he heard Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was for two more days. ... When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him. But Mary stayed at home. ...After she said this, she went [continued on page 132] back home.

Mary always made the right choice when it came to showing Jesus her love. She sat at His feet, she devoured His teachings and she trusted Him. In an extreme act of devotion, she poured perfume on His feet and wiped His feet with her hair. Her every action proved her devotion to Jesus over and over. What do you do to show Jesus your love and devotion? Meditate on this passage, giving special attention to Mary's actions. Make a list of the things you can do to show Jesus how much you love Him. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:5)

Truth for Your children Today’s Bible Passage

Luke 10:38-42; John 11:1,3,6,20,28-29,32; 12:1-8 continued from page 131 She called her sister Mary to one side to talk to her. “The Teacher is here,” Martha said. “He is asking for you.” When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. ...Mary reached the place where Jesus was. When she saw him, she fell at his feet. She said, “Lord, I wish you had been here! Then my brother would not have died.” ...It was six days before the Passover Feast. Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived. Lazarus was the one Jesus had raised from the dead. A dinner was given at Bethany to honor Jesus. Martha served the food. Lazarus was among those at the table with Jesus. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard. It was an expensive perfume. She poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the sweet smell of perfume. But Judas Iscariot didn’t like what Mary did. He was one of Jesus’ disciples. Later he was going to hand Jesus over to his enemies. Judas said, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold? Why wasn’t the money given to poor people? It was worth a year’s pay.” He didn’t say this because he cared about the poor. He said it because he was a thief. Judas was in charge of the money bag. He used to help himself to what was in it. “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “The perfume was meant for the day I am buried. You will always have the poor among you. But you won’t always have me.” PAG E 1 3 2

Story Time Introduction “I Can Do That!” EASY IDEAS FOR CREATIVE STORYTELLING: Luke 10:38-42; John 11:1, 3, 6, 20, 28-29, 32; 12:1-8

Hi boys and girls! We have been learning more about Jesus. Jesus is so amazing! Last week we learned that Jesus and a few of His special friends walked up to the very top of a mountain. Do you remember what happened on top of the mountain? (Let the children answer.) Jesus loved His special friends. He chose each one of them to be His special friends. But Jesus had some other friends He was very close to. He loved them. And they loved Him and believed in Him. Jesus stayed with them when He visited their city. They ate together, talked and had fun. Well, today we are going to hear about one of those friends in particular. Her name was Mary.

Pillowcase of Props

Storyteller: The lesson from the Bible starts here. See the “I Can Do That” sidebar on this page for storytelling ideas.

Make this story come vividly alive by using props as visual aids. • Fill your pillowcase with a small brush and dustpan, a thermometer, a box of tissues, a small plate and cup, a bottle of perfume, and a baggie of play money. • Pull out the props one by one as you follow the prompts in the story.

Jesus and His special friends went to the city of Bethany. That was where a woman named Martha lived. Her sister Mary lived there also, along with their brother, Lazarus. Jesus was welcome to stay in their house and visit with them. So, Jesus went into their house and sat down. Mary sat down at Jesus’ feet and listened to Him. Mary loved Jesus.

MARY LOVED JESUS

MARY WORSHIPED JESUS

But Martha was busy doing things around the house. (Pull out the small brush and dustpan.) She wanted everything to be just right for Jesus’ visit. She had so much to do. Finally, Martha went over to Jesus. She said, "Jesus, my sister isn't helping me at all. I am doing all this work by myself. Don't you care? Please, tell her to get up and help me." Jesus said, "Martha, Martha. You are worried and upset about so many things. There is only one thing that is important right now. That's what Mary chose to do. I won't take that away from her." Mary knew how important Jesus was. Mary worshiped Jesus. One day, Lazarus got very sick. (Pull out the thermometer.) Right away, Mary and Martha sent a message to Jesus. "Jesus! Come quick! Our brother Lazarus is very sick." Jesus got the message, but He didn't leave to visit Lazarus for two more days. As soon as Jesus arrived in the city of Bethany, He learned that Lazarus had died. Jesus went to their house. Martha ran out to meet Him. But Mary stayed at home. She was crying so hard. (Pull out a box of tissues.) She was sad that her brother had died. She couldn't even stand up. Then Martha came back home to get Mary. She whispered in Mary's ear, "Mary, Jesus is here. He is asking for you." Mary jumped up quickly and ran to find Jesus. Mary loved Jesus.

Story Time

[cont.]

When Mary saw Jesus, she fell down at His feet. Mary cried, "Oh Jesus! If only you had been here. I know my brother would not have died." Well boys and girls, Jesus did something amazing! He made Lazarus come alive again! Mary and Martha were so happy! Their brother was alive again! Mary worshiped Jesus. On another day, Jesus went to the city of Bethany. Mary, Martha and Lazarus wanted to have a special party for Jesus. They wanted to show Jesus how much they loved Him. Jesus was their guest of honor. Mary was busy serving the food. Lazarus sat with Jesus at the table along with Jesus' special friends. (Pull out the small plate and cup.) Then Mary came into the room. She did something sweet and wonderful. Mary loved Jesus. She wanted to show Jesus how much she loved Him. She held a bottle of very expensive perfume in her hands. (Pull out the bottle of perfume.) She went over to Jesus and knelt at His feet. She poured the perfume out on Jesus’ feet. (Spray the perfume in the air.) Then she wiped His feet with her hair. Mary worshiped Jesus. The whole house was filled with the wonderful smell of the perfume. Everyone there could smell the perfume. They all looked at Mary. They saw what she had done. There was one person there who didn't like what Mary had done. His name was Judas. He was one of Jesus' special friends. Judas didn't love Jesus the way Mary did. Judas said, "That perfume cost a lot of money! Why didn’t you sell it and give the money to poor people?" (Pull out the baggie of play money.) Judas didn't care one little bit about poor people. He really just wanted the money for himself. In fact, sometimes he would steal money! Jesus said to Judas, "Leave Mary alone. She poured the perfume on My feet because she loves Me. She poured the perfume on My feet because she worships Me." Boys and girls, Mary loved Jesus. She loved Jesus because He loved her. She loved Jesus because He was so kind to her, and her sister and brother. And Mary worshiped Jesus. Mary knew how important Jesus was. Go to “Wrap It Up!” in the sidebar.

MONDAY

“Jesus said, ‘I’m the world’s light. Follow me. Then you won’t live in the dark. You’ll have the light of life.’” John 8:12

Read & Do

Read Luke 10:38-42; John 11:1, 3, 6, 20, 28-29, 32; 12:1-8. Ask your child, “Why do you think Mary poured perfume on Jesus’ feet? What is worship? How can you worship Jesus?”

TUESDAY

Memory Verse for Unit 6

o Mary loved Jesus o Mary worshiped Jesus

Out & About

Mary was completely devoted to Jesus. He was the most important person in her life. One of the ways we can express our devotion to Jesus is by serving Him. When you visit the sick, you are loving Jesus. When you feed the hungry, you are serving Jesus. When you give money to the poor, you are worshiping Jesus. Think of ways you can show your child how important Jesus is in your life by serving others.

WEDNESDAY

Art

Mary showed Jesus how much she loved him in a very simple way. You can show your love to your child in a very simple way. Trace your child’s foot on a piece of paper with a crayon. As you trace it, talk about the special little person who is connected to that foot. Express your love to your child. Give your child a turn to trace your foot. Then decorate your foot tracings together.

THURSDAY

Snack

Make some heart-shaped cookies with your child. Make your favorite sugar cookie dough, or buy some ready-made dough at the store. Roll the dough out and cut out heart shapes. Decorate the cookies with icing and sprinkles. As you work together, talk about the Bible story and how much Mary loved Jesus. Ask, “What did Mary do to show her love for Jesus?” Say, “We are going to share our cookies to show our love to others.”

FRIDAY

Pray & Praise

Mary’s heart was full of love for Jesus and it came out in the form of honor and praise. She was not afraid to express openly how she felt about Jesus. Spend some time with your family and openly express how you feel about Jesus. Talk about what you can do to show how much you love Him. Then pray and ask God to help you live a life that honors and worships Jesus.

SATURDAY

Just for Parents...
