Course/Module description: In the course we will study the uniqueness of Polish culture as it shows itself in language, literature and art and in relations with other cultures (especially in Russian).

Course/Module aims: The aim of the course is to introduce the Polish culture and literature in their highest achievements and to examine the interaction of Polish culture with other cultures, first of all Russian and the historical and social aspects of that interaction. To achieve knowledge of translation problems with translating Polish literature of different eras to Russian.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: To receive a picture of Polish culture unity in it’s development and heritage and it’s main problems in historical-cultural context. To create an understanding of Polish-Russian relations and their problems over various historical eras. To perceive the concept of Polish cinema as a unique phenomenon in history of East-European film industry . To deepen the skills of literature and film analysis (based on polish material). To improve reading skills in Polish for future self education.

Poland in Medieval Europe: main historic events (the Crusade wars, the union with Lithuania), Krak‫ף‬w University (1364), Polish literature in Latin and the first works in Polish language. XVI c. The parliament system in Poland and the social structure. Religious movements. The development of science – Mikolaj Kopernik. The history chronicles: Jan DBugosz. Polish-European cultural and political relations. Prose of Mikolaj Rej. Poetry of Jan Kochanowski: Psalmy, Pie[ni. Fraszki and the frashka genre in Polish literature, Treny. Mikolaj Sp-Sza|iDski. Sonety, Epitafium Rzymowi. XVII c. Historical overview - the wars, political and economical situation. Sarmatizm – a unique phenomenon in Polish culture, the mentality of the shliahta. The Baroque style in art and literature. Jan Andrzej Morsztyn. Daniel Naborowski. The baroque and rococo styles in the architecture of Polish cities (Krakow, Warsawa, Wilna, etc.).
