President’s Report

Jacksonville Area Chamber of Commerce

Congressman Aaron Schock and his team arranged for another amazing Washington D.C. Fly-In in July. The Chamber’s Government Division sponsors this event as well as the Springfield Drive-In. These are two examples of ways to stay in touch with elected officials and ensure they hear issues important to our area. As a Chamber Member, please express your concerns regarding any regulations pertaining to your particular business with the Contact Club Member who calls on you or pass it along to me. These concerns are then shared with the Chamber Board so we can better serve you. The Education Division kicks off the Business Education Partnership program for the 2014-2015 school year on August 6th. We are fortunate to have 23 partnerships with both public and private schools. If you are interested in becoming an active part of this valuable program, you can call the Chamber office. There are many opportunities in addition to being the sole BEP partner for a school. Our Agri-Industry Division invites you to attend a tour at CCK Automations to learn more about their ag operation. The majority of CCK’s work is in the field of agriculture. This is another example of how important ag is to our area. I hope you will join us on Aug. 26th. Workshops on a variety of topics are part of the Business Division’s plan of work. They recently welcomed State’s Attorney Bobby Bonjean to address the topic of identity fraud and some best practices in a business. Yet to come in 2014 include an Ameren Illinois

4

workshop on business recovery, an OSHA seminar on their emphasis programs for next year, and an Illinois Department of Employment Security program. There are inserts in this Ginny Fanning edition for upcoming events from two of our divisions. The Be Aware Wellness Fair sponsored by the Chamber’s Health & Community Agencies Division in partnership with Passavant Area Hospital and the Mia Ware Foundation registration form may be completed and returned to ensure your exhibit location. The Membership Division has an invitation to attend the 57th Annual Steak Fry that has some new and exciting additions to this always popular event. Our YPN Division will continue their community involvement by working on the new big toy August 23rd in Community Park. If you have an associate between the ages of 20 to 40, please tell them about our Young Professionals. They have a fun time working together, learning more about the area, and building friendships. As you can see the Chamber Divisions don’t slow down in the summer. We have wonderful volunteers who work on these various projects ensuring their success. If you are not currently involved with a division committee, I would be happy to meet with you to explain in more detail the great work each one does and how it could benefit you and your business to participate.

Health & Wellness

Sponsored by the Health & Community Agencies Division Submitted by Dale Bainter, Morgan County Health Department Administrator Vaccine Preventable Diseases An important goal in Public Health is disease prevention. While some vaccine preventable diseases have been eliminated and the incidence of others reduced, the recent outbreak of mumps in and around our communities serves as a reminder of the importance of keeping vaccinations current. When a person gets vaccinated, they are not only protecting themselves but those they come into contact with. If a large number of the community is vaccinated against a disease, that group is less likely to get the disease and pass it to others, thereby creating a community or herd immunity. On the other hand, if vaccinations decrease, the vaccine preventable diseases can increase again. Many may think that vaccinations are mainly for infants and children, however vaccinations are recommended throughout life, including adolescence and adults. Routine childhood vaccinations can prevent 14 diseases: Chickenpox, Diphtheria,

Hib Disease, Hepatitis A and B, Influenza (beginning at age 6 months), Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Polio, Pneumococcal Disease, Rotavirus, Rubella, and Tetanus. Vaccinations for adolescents focuses on those diseases for which they are at a higher risk: meningococcal disease and Human Papillomavirus (HPV). This age group also receives a vaccination of Tdap and an annual vaccination against influenza. Vaccinations needed as an adult can depend on a variety of factors including age, health conditions, lifestyle, travel and previous vaccinations. Adults need protection against: Seasonal Influenza, Tetanus, diphtheria and Pertussis (Tdap), Shingles (age 60 years and older), and Pneumococcal Disease (age 65 years and older and adults with specific health conditions). Other vaccinations may be needed such as Hepatitis A and B, Meningococcal Disease, Chickenpox, and Measles Mumps and Rubella. Ask your Doctor which vaccines are recommended for you.

Agri-Industry tour J.O. Harris J.O. Harris was established in 1934 by J.O. Harris focusing on tractors, planters, shellers and corn pickers. Today the business is run by J.O.’s two sons J.R. & Andy and J.R.’s son Jay. The focus of the business has changed with time and now includes many different types of new and used equipment. Since 2003, they have been exporting ag equipment to many countries including Ukraine, Russia, South Africa, Australia, Mexico, and Canada.
