Overview The Nurses in Action Program is a team-based program held over 4 weeks which allows nurses and allied health professionals to provide primary healthcare services to people living in remote communities. By enrolling in this program, you will join a group of like-minded healthcare providers under the guidance of a trained and qualified RN Australian Team Leader. You will learn about Kenyan culture, experience living in a rural village, and utilise your skills through a variety of placements. These may include clinical placements, the facilitation of health promotion sessions, the delivery of home-based care to the chronically ill and elderly, and running mobile medical camps which provide free health care to rural communities. WYI strongly supports reciprocal education on our NIA programs. You will be encouraged to share your knowledge and skills with local community members and healthcare providers while learning about primary healthcare practices in a developing country.

4 | Overview

What’s Involved? Odede Community Health Centre A range of placement opportunities All volunteers will be able to support hospital activities in Odede within their specialised field. You will help treat the local people, provide additional training to local staff and offer an extra pair of hands where required. As part of our program, you may wish to volunteer at one of three clinics in neighbouring communities. At these clinics you will help manage the steady flow of patients while providing a range of care and support services. Your NIA group will also be involved in at least two medical camps during the program. You will accompany a group of doctors and nurses to a remote community where there are little to no medical facilities available for the local people. Participating in the medical camp will entail supporting staff to provide free medical advice and treatment to approximately 200-500 people who otherwise would not have been able to access medical treatment. In addition to your medical placements you may choose to help out at the local primary school, assist with WYI’s orphan home care program, work with the local women in the fields, assist with income generating projects or even help to build a family a new home.

Cultural Immersion A significant portion of your program will be spent in Odede, located about 2 hours outside of Kisumu, Kenya’s third largest city. As part of the NIA, you will live here with basic accommodation and facilities but which are safe and secure. You will have the rare opportunity to witness firsthand the challenges faced by healthcare providers at rural health posts and hospitals. You will also have the opportunity to interact with community members on a daily basis, learn about their unique culture and immerse yourself in local activities and events.

Preparation Prior to your departure, WYI will conduct a group training session via Skype with your NIA team. During the chat, we will talk in detail about your program, the communities you will visit, your placement options and Kenya in general. We will also be on hand to address any questions you may have.

Health The state of health in Kenya requires significant improvement. The Healthcare system struggles to provide crucial services, particularly for communities living outside of major cities. Many illnesses in Kenya are transmitted by insects, animals and by the use of contaminated water for washing and drinking. Infectious respiratory diseases and malaria account for the majority of illnesses and deaths in the country, while tuberculosis, dysentery, and parasitic and venereal diseases are common occurrences. HIV/AIDS continues to devastate families and communities across the country, with 3 in 5 people living with the virus in some locations. Maternal and infant health are also a concern with many women still giving birth at home in unsafe conditions because of a lack of access to basic health services.

Kenya Country Information | 7

Awareness of sanitation and hygiene principles is limited, and people rarely receive education about their bodies and living a healthy lifestyle. Climate change is also beginning to have an impact in Kenya, with increasingly long droughts and heightened malaria risk becoming problematic in many regions. Despite major achievements in the Kenyan health sector, there remain to be challenges in developing strong policies, leadership and quality training for health workers.

Culture and Religion There are more than 40 indigenous tribes and many other ethnic communities living in this country, many speaking different traditional languages and holding their own unique sub-cultures. The five largest tribal groups, which account for approximately 70% of the population, are Kikuyu, Luo, Luhya, Kamba and Kelnjin. Kenya is a modest country with regards to socially acceptable behaviours, dress and presentation. The majority of Kenyans identify as Christian though there is also a strong Islamic following, particularly in the coastal regions. Many different denominations of Christianity exist and people take their faith very seriously. Tribal beliefs are slowly petering out and very few traditional tribes continue to reside in the country today.

Politics and Government Kenya gained political independence from British rule in 1963 and became a Republic within the Commonwealth of Nations in 1964. Although the government is elected through democracy, Kena has experienced several instances of internal political conflict and continues to struggle with government corruption.

Frequently Asked Questions How old do I need to be? This program is for adults of all ages. There is no maximum age for this program.

Which qualifications do I need to participate on this program? All NIA participants must have formal qualifications in one of the following areas: • • • • •

Nursing (Registered, Enrolled or Endorsed Enrolled, all areas) Midwifery Paramedicine Physiotherapy Occupational Therapy

What is the selection criteria? In addition to possessing the relevant qualifications, WYI seeks to recruit resilient and adaptable participants with excellent communication skills and a mature outlook. Participants must also be fit and healthy and able to work effectively in a team environment. Applicants will be notified of their suitability during the initial application process for the program.

What areas of Kenya will I travel to? You will fly in to Kisumu for this program and spend the majority of your time in a rural village about 2 hours outside of Kisumu. Kisumu is located on the shores of Lake Victoria and has supermarkets, department stores, banks, internet cafes and a western hospital. You will then travel to the remote village of Odede where the WYI health clinic is based. You can then choose to participate on the three day safari at the end of your program. You will either complete in Kisumu (no safari) or in Nairobi (with safari) depending on which option you choose.

What will my living arrangements be? During the orientation period and in the last couple of days of your program you will stay in a hotel in Kisumu. During the program you will stay in basic, share house style accommodation with the rest of your team in a rural village. Because of the rural location, you may not have access to electricity or running water, however solar power will be available if possible and your Team Leader will ensure you always have access to clean drinking and bathing water. The living conditions might be a challenge but it is a fantastic experience and a great way to truly immerse yourself in the Kenyan culture!

Frequently Asked Questions | 17

What kind of food will I eat? During your orientation, you will be eating most meals at local cafes and restaurants in Kisumu. While in the village, WYI will shop locally at the markets and we will hire a cook to prepare your meals. We provide a vegetarian diet while on placement in Odede to ensure your health is maintained.

What if I have any special dietary requirements? You will need to inform WYI and your Team Leader of this at the start of your program, and take responsibility for ensuring your dietary requirements are met. If you have any concerns about this, make sure you talk with your Team Leader about the best way to manage your diet and what kinds of foods you can and cannot eat.

Do I need to speak the local language? Over 64 languages and dialects are used in Kenya, with Swahili and English being the most common amongst them. English is widely taught as a second language throughout Kenya so you will be able to communicate reasonably well with most people during your program.

When should I apply for a position on the program? Programs fill very quickly so it is recommended that you apply for a program at least 6-9 months prior to the program start date. This will allow you adequate time to pay off your program fee gradually and organise your fundraising campaign. WYI accepts applications up to 60 days prior to the program commencement date, providing places are still available.

18 | Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim my annual CPD hours? WYI has been endorsed by the ANMJ as a CPD delivery organisation. Under a supervised environment, you will be able to complete a journal and claim your annual CPD hours.

Is my program fee tax deductible? As you are able to claim your CPD training hours on your NIA program, you should be able to claim your program and flight expenses on your next tax return (check with your accountant first). That makes your Nurses in Action Program fully tax deductible! Any fundraising or donations made towards your fundraising target of $2,200 (which is part of your requirements to participate in the NIA program) are fully tax deductible. If you raise any money where donors receive goods or services in return for their contributions, then these funds are not tax deductible. What are the safety risks in Kenya? WYI’s NIA program is designed to ensure any risks are minimised, and our priority at all times during your program is the safety and wellbeing of you and your team. We have extensive risk management plans in place, as well as evacuation procedures. Out Team Leaders and incountry staff are fully trained in these areas, and will be responsible for you and your team’s safety in the unlikely event of an emergency. During your program, you will not travel to areas which are identified as high-risk locations.

Why do you run programs in a limited number of countries? At WYI, we value quality over quantity. We ensure that our destinations provide participants with the greatest possible volunteering experience. We have worked in countries like Nepal and Kenya since 1992 and have a deep network and relationship with these countries and with our international partners. Fundraising The challenge In addition to your program fee, you will be required to raise $2,200 to support WYI’s Global Projects Fund. This money goes towards the community development project you will be working on and to WYI’s projects in Nepal and around the world.

The cause The funds you raise will make a real impact on the communities you work with in Kenya, and to other communities around the world. By raising this additional $2,200 you can help to create change by supporting projects such as: Mama Ann’s Odede Community Health Centre in Kenya The Odede Health Centre is a WYI initiative that brings crucial healthcare services to thousands of people living in extreme poverty every year. It provides maternal and infant health care, HIV testing and support, and many other services. Hundreds of women give birth safely at the Health Centre each year, and community outreach programs provide education and basic medical services for schools and villages around Odede.

How to fundraise Once you have paid your program fee deposit of $550, WYI will send you a Fundraising Kit containing fundraising ideas, terms and conditions, and handy hints and tips. You will need to raise a minimum of $2,200 to support WYI’s global projects, and the donations you receive are fully tax deductible.* There are many ways you can raise your $2,200 target! You could host a trivia night, movie night, tea party or fundraising dinner, arrange a garage sale or even hold a sausage sizzle at a local business or sports club. Or you could create an online fundraising campaign and invite your family, friends, acquaintances and colleagues to donate via social media. WYI regularly utilises Everyday Hero (everydayhero.com.au) as an online fundraising platform, and we can provide you with any advice or support you need to reach your target. Please contact the office on (08) 8340 1266 for more information about fundraising. * Please note that you cannot fundraise your program fee * A ‘donation’ requires the donor to receive nothing in return (e.g. chocolate bars and raffle tickets are not tax deductible) * Please note that any personal contributions towards your program fee or fundraising target are not tax deductible
