3 concerts in Huddersfield Town Hall and 2 concerts in Huddersfield Parish Church Concert Season 2012-2013

10 November 2012 Borodin Kalinnikov Rachmaninov

Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor Symphony No 2 Piano Concerto No 3

Conductor Piano Soloist

Nicholas Smith William Green

Our opening concert has been designed to bring you music "From Russia with love", a programme built around soloist William Green's suggestion of the mighty Piano Concerto No. 3 by Rachmaninov. William's last performance with the orchestra was in May 2011, when his playing of the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini was described as "of immense musicality as well as technical skill". This concerto, perhaps less well-known than the second, was given particular prominence in the film "Shine" and has since enjoyed a higher profile in the concert hall and on radio. Vasily Kalinnikov is a relatively little-known composer, which may be partially accounted for by his death at the age of only 34. He was Assistant Conductor of the Moscow Italian Opera from 1893-94, but was obliged to resign due to ill-health. Of his two symphonies, the second is the less performed and we are delighted to feature it in this concert. We open with the famous Polovtsian Dances by Borodin, taken from the ballet scene in Act 2 of the opera, Prince Igor. As is well-known, the opera was left unfinished when Borodin died in 1887 and was completed by his friends Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov. The Polovtsy were nomadic invaders of Russia and are responsible for the capture of Igor according to the opera's plot. They provide a colourful and dramatic opening to the concert and our new season.

9 February 2013 Wagner Wagner Bruckner

Overture - The Flying Dutchman Prelude and Liebestod (Tristan and Isolde) Symphony No 7

Conductor Nicholas Smith Soprano Soloist Cressida Sharp Our soloist tonight is a former Clare College Choral Scholar and is tipped by conductor Nicholas Smith as a star of the future. Cressida joins us in a performance of the Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde, part of a programme marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of Richard Wagner. Let's give her a warm welcome to Huddersfield. This concert opens with Wagner's overture to the opera The Flying Dutchman, composed in 1841 using Wagner's own libretto. It is based on the legend of a sailor condemned to sail his ship until redeemed by a faithful woman. He is only permitted to try to achieve his salvation once every 7 years. The heroine, Senta, proves her faithfulness by leaping from a cliff top and they rise towards heaven together. Throughout his life, Bruckner remained a devout Catholic whose faith pervades his music. His Symphony No 7 is closely connected with Wagner, who died whilst Bruckner was working on the Adagio. Wagner had been something of a mentor to Bruckner during the difficult relationship he endured with the Viennese pro-Brahms faction. In tribute, Bruckner introduced a quartet of Wagner tubas into the Adagio and it is said that the coda is a direct response to news of Wagner's death. Did you know that the expression "Good Night Vienna" is taken from an song and operetta of the same name, written in 1932 as a vehicle for Richard Tauber? It's also the title of Ringo Starr's fourth solo album.

27 April 2013 Chabrier Debussy Bizet Poulenc Saint-Saëns

España Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune L'Arlésienne Suite No 2 Ballet Suite - Les Biches Symphony No 3 (Organ Symphony)

Conductor

Nicholas Smith

In a concert which might be titled "The French Connection", we open with Chabrier's rhapsody based on his visit to Spain in 1882-3 and using Spanish tunes and rhythms he heard then. Pierre Boulez once said that "just as modern poetry surely took root in certain of Baudelaire's poems, so one is justified in saying that modern music was awakened by L'Après-midi d'un faune". Debussy based his work on a poem of the same name by Mallarmé, and both work through suggestion rather than statement of themes, evoking a languid and hedonistic atmosphere. A perfect showcase for the woodwind section of the Philharmonic. Bizet composed 27 items of incidental music for the play by Daudet, and later incorporated some of the music into Carmen. Poulenc's ballet suite for Diaghilev's Ballet Russe was composed in 1923 and the ballet was produced in Monte Carlo in 1924. It dates from a period in Poulenc's life when he was trying to achieve a balance between elegant modernity and a classical sense of proportion, under the influence of his friend Jean Cocteau. Saint-Saëns' Symphony No 3 was dedicated to the memory of Liszt and was first performed in London in 1886. He said of his own work "I ran after the chimera of purity of style and perfection of form", perhaps suggesting that he felt he never quite achieved his goal. Nevertheless, this symphony has remained a popular work with audiences and performers alike.
