Jolly Phonics is a comprehensive programme, based on the proven, fun and multi-sensory synthetic phonics method that gets children reading and writing from an early age. Jolly Phonics provides seven years of teaching starting with phonics in Reception/P1 and going all the way through to Year 6/P7. It enables teachers to deliver fun and effective lessons embedding phonics, spelling, grammar and punctuation concepts that will empower children to become clear and confident communicators.

Whole school teaching consistency

The phonics teaching and skills are revised and extended through systematic spelling lessons in each year, gradually building children’s knowledge of spelling patterns. Alongside this, the children are also taught the core concepts of grammar and punctuation, starting with simple age-appropriate definitions and building toward more complex understanding. Children are given the tools that they need to independently write what they want clearly and with expression.

Phonics

The sample pages show how the for /ai/ is taught through the programme. These pages are from The Phonics and Grammar Handbooks. The same content can also be found in the phonic and grammar pupil/teacher books, which can be used as an alternative to the handbooks. Phonics year Children learn the /ai/ sound and practice blending and segmenting words: for example, ‘rain’, ‘sail’, ‘snail’. Once the 42 letters sounds are secure, the alternatives can be introduced for reading. With regular blending practice, the children become familiar with the alternatives, making it easier for them to choose the correct spellings later on. Grammar 1 Teaches the main alternatives of /ai/ for spelling: and . Children are taught one spelling per lesson. Each lesson has a spelling list of 10 words, including 4 /ai/ words.

Module 1 - covers the history of literacy teaching and evaluates the various methods used to teach reading and writing over the years.

Module 1 - covers the history of grammar and evaluates the myths and facts about why it should be taught. An introduction to the Grammar programme is also provided.

Module 2 - introduces Jolly Phonics and explains the five basic skills that are taught in the programme.

Module 2 - introduces grammar and punctuation concepts that are taught in the 6 year programme. Topics include sentences, phrases, clauses, parts of speech, parsing and punctuation.

Module 3 - gives practical teaching advice and guidance. Explains how all the five skills can be incorporated into daily lessons and the pace of teaching. Module 4 - discusses tried and tested techniques that can be used for teaching children that are struggling. Module 5 - looks at research studies, which have examined the various methods used to teach literacy.
