The Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestras

The Cape Philharmonic is alive and well in Cape Town – become part of the action!

The sounds of a symphony resemble a divine experience as the harmonies of the great composers flow from City Hall – they bring joy to body and soul. The universal language of music resounds in Cape Town because of the undying support of the audience, patrons and donors. The Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestras – a symphony orchestra and a wind band - were launched in 2004 as part of the CPO’s development and transformation plan. The members of the CPO are committed to a programme of teaching and training the young musicians through regular workshops, orchestra rehearsals and one-on-one tuition. The young Cape Town conductor Brandon Phillips (winner of the first Len van Zyl Conductors’ competition) was appointed Artistic Director and Conductor of the youth orchestras in March 2012. These orchestras have become soughtafter ensembles in the Western Cape. Apart from performing regular curtainraisers for the CPO and taking part in the annual Cape Town International Summer Music Festival, they also perform in other festivals at at many corporate events.

Recent performances include at the Stellenbosch International Chamber Festival, the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre Orchestra Festival, the Mercedes Benz SA Fashion Week, the Iziko Museum Youth Day Celebrations, the Fleur du Cap Awards at Artscape Theatre Centre, two concerts in collaboration with Artscape (Women’s Week, Africa Day) and a Heritage Day concert at the V&A Waterfront. The symphony orchestra has performed with many well-known soloists, including Loyiso and Zwai Bala, Ivan Siegelaar, Neville D, Magdaleen Minnaar and the Soweto Gospel Choir. In March 2013, the members of the CPYO were mentored by members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam during its tour of South Africa.

In recent years the orchestra has, beside its mission of performance excellence, also became a beacon of hope for hundreds of young aspiring musicians to realise their dreams of becoming a professional musician. Educational and Outreach training programmes were initiated in 2003 to start a transformation process which would ensure that the CPO is a culturally inclusive organisation.

The CPO Academy, two youth orchestras in training and performing at top corporate events, four Masidlale Music Projects in Langa, Nyanga, Gugulethu and Atlantis and eight weeks of school concerts per annum have put the CPO on the map as a major contributor to skills training and transfer, empowerment and job creation. Our dedication, music and securing the future for symphonic concerts in Cape Town requires your support. Please make a donation to the orchestra to sustain its status quo as the best entertaining organisation in the Cape. It is your orchestra – be part of the action via the following options:

You can assist by: • Setting up a monthly debit order to the CPO • Making an annual donation to the CPO • Sponsor a concert to the amount of R150 000 which will secure naming rights for the concert • Become an Orchestra Angel by donating R50 000 for 5 years to the Endowment Trust. • Make a bequest to the CPO • Sponsor a musician

Masidlale Music Project Masidlale was established in the townships of Gugulethu and Nyanga in 2009 to provide children with string instrument training, irrespective of the participants’ financial means or background. The project has grown and now includes satellite centres in Langa and Atlantis. Each school/satellite centre has a violin teacher who trains the students weekly, assisted by Suzuki project leader, Maria Botha.
