SINGERS MARIN HISTORY Founded by Artistic Director Jan Pedersen Schiff in January 1987, Choral Singers of Marin became a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization in July 1988, with Wings of Song as its first ensemble. This all-female, non-auditioned chorus continues to grow in numbers and excellence. Singers Marin formed its first mixed chorus in 1992. Originally called Choral Singers of Marin, the name was changed to A Joyful Sound! Today, this chorus performs only in the summers and encourages family participation. After four successful seasons, the Marin Master Chorale presented an historic final performance of the Berlioz Requiem at Davies Symphony Hall in May 2001. It is now a professional mixed ensemble known as Just Voices. The youth program had its formal beginnings in 1996 after a two-year sponsorship of the Marin High School Honors Chorus. The first all-female teen chorus chose the name les étoiles, and subsequently became the “stars” of Singers Marin. Caroling Kids joined in the fall of 1996, after a successful independent season. The children’s program expanded after its participation in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. Starlights (ages nine through middle school) was created in 2000, and Celestial Voices (membership by audition for the same age group) was added in the fall of 2004. These “star” programs now also include Twinkling Stars (ages six through eight), and a program for young boys, the Comets. Concert touring has become a regular part of the opportunities offered to our singers. In 1995, 1999, 2002, 2006 and 2011, adult singers performed in Carnegie Hall. In 1997, they also traveled to Berlin and Vienna, performing at the International Schubert Festival. In 2001, they performed the Berlioz Requiem at the Sydney Opera House, and, in 2004, Wings of Song participated in the Choir Olympics in Bremen, Germany. In 1999 les étoiles performed at the Kiwanis Choral Festival in Vancouver, BC. In 2001, they took part in the Australian International Music Festival, performing in the Sydney Opera House and receiving a gold award. In 2003, they presented a concert tour in Scandinavia, which included Norway and Finland, and in 2004 also participated in the Choir Olympics, receiving a bronze medal. In 2005, Celestial Voices participated in the Children in Harmony Festival at Disney World Resort, and in 2006 competed in the Golden Gate International Children’s Choral Festival, earning second and third place finishes. Wings of Song returned to Carnegie Hall with les étoiles in April 2006, performing with artistic director Jan Pedersen Schiff as guest conductor. In 2008, Wings of Song members took part in a Mexican Choral Cruise, and les étoiles & Celestial Voices traveled to Graz, Austria, receiving a silver diploma in the World Choir Games. In 2009, les étoiles participated in the Golden Gate International Youth Choral Festival taking second place in both the Folk and Historical categories. In 2010, they traveled to South Africa, for the Ihlombe Choral Festival, in 2011, they competed at the World Choir Games in Cincinnati, winning a silver and bronze medal, and in 2014 competed again in the WCG in Riga, Latvia, winning two silver medals. 2015 brought les étoiles to Carnegie Hall to perform “The Peacemakers,” and Wings of Song to Rome to sing at the Vatican. Singers Marin has received several awards over the years, including The Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce 2001 Volunteer of the Year Award for “outstanding community service and contribution to the community of Mill Valley and the county of Marin,” and the Marin County Women’s Commission Certificate of Commendation in 2002 for “the life enriching experience of Wings of Song to the women of Marin and their elderly audiences, and reaching out to teen girls with the extraordinary ensemble of les étoiles.”

MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER/ ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to the first concert of our 2015/1016 “Glowing Harmonies” Concert Season. Now in its 20th year at the Marin Center, this familyoriented performance continues to be a highlight of the season. A few songs remain a tradition: Craig Courtney’s “Carols of the Night” (“O Holy Night” and “Silent Night”) masterfully accompanied by pianist, Irene Jacobson, and “Let There Be Peace on Earth,” signed for the deaf by our youth choruses. Even after 20 years, I never grow tired of conducting these beautiful and powerful compositions. They continue to evoke those spine tingling goose bumps from audiences and singers alike. This is why we sing! However, the constant challenge for me each year is how to top the previous year’s “Best ever!” remarks from our audience, and I never fully know until it’s over whether we achieved that goal. This year’s “Candlelight Magic” theme came out of a trip to the Midwest last spring when I stopped at a little Scandinavian souvenir shop in Wisconsin. There I found a Luciakrona. The crown of candles is worn by a young woman representing Saint Lucia (Latin for light) followed by a procession of young singers singing the famous Neopolitan song Santa Lucia. For the Scandinavians, she represents bringing light into the dark winter night. Thus was born our candlelight theme, which led to selecting the following repertoire gems: “Wishes and Candles” by the late Stephen Paulis, composed for the NYC Lincoln Center tree lighting; “Candlelight Carol,” by John Rutter, now becoming a favorite among newer Christmas carols; “In the Candlelight” as sung by the children with lyrics that meld Christmas and Hanukkah traditions. Returning as our guest artist on harp is Bertina Boyadjiev who will accompany many of these songs. Knowing that holiday traditions are not only about candles, fun selections of songs about Santa are included with Robert Alan Clink as guest baritone soloist leading the traditional “Twas the Night Before Christmas” story. In closing the concert, I return to songs about peace, as we remember the deeper meaning of the season: “Peace on earth, good will to all.” A newer composition by Jim Papoulis sends out a powerful message with his lyrics, “How many Christmases will there be ‘til we learn to live as one!” which we will follow by singing “Light One Candle” by Peter, Paul, and Mary. I believe our mission to “touch hearts and uplift spirits” has the potential once again of being fulfilled in this concert. I hope you enjoy! In peace and harmony,

Jan Pedersen Schiff 5

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT Spring is here again! As I write this, news of the drought throughout California is making headlines in the local, national, and international news. The small storms that passed through at the end of Spring Break week brought just enough moisture to whet our appetites. Despite our lovely green hills in Marin, I am told we are in for a long, hot, dry summer! A similar drought occurs annually at this time of year in the Singers Marin budget. One of our major fundraising events will have taken place by the time you read this, but we rely on our supporters throughout the year. Our women’s chorus, Wings of Song, has recently returned from their trip to Rome, and by all accounts it was wonderful! I kept up by watching for posts on Facebook by our singers. Please check out our activities there, or sign up for our monthly newsletter at www.singersmarin.org. Please note our continued involvement in bringing vocal instruction to our local community. It is as vital as rain! I support Singers Marin with my time and funding, and am grateful to be able to do so. I am also so very thankful to those of you who have supported us in the past, and hopeful that I can count on your continued support! I will be stepping down from my role as President in September, after my term is up, but look forward to supporting Singers Marin in any way I can.

Calling all new singers!

If you enjoyed listening to today’s concert, and you or your daughter or son would like to try out one of our rehearsals, we would love for you to come along and join us! Our spring session begins the second week in January, and you can check out our range of offerings by visiting our website at www.singersmarin.org or by reading our chorus profiles in this program. We will waive the new member registration fee of $25 if you show this program announcement at the time of booking. So keep it safe, and we look forward to welcoming you to Singers Marin in the New Year!

CAROL SING-ALONG Angels We Have Heard On High Angels we have heard on high sweetly singing o’er the plains, And the mountains in reply, echoing their joyous strains. Gloria in excelsis Deo; Gloria in excelsis Deo. Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the new-born King. Gloria in excelsis Deo; Gloria in excelsis Deo. See him in a manger laid, whom the choirs of angels praise Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, while our hearts in love we raise. Gloria in excelsis Deo; Gloria in excelsis Deo

We Three Kings We three kings of Orient are bearing gifts, we traverse afar Field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star. O…Star of wonder, Star of night. Star with royal beauty bright, Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to the perfect light. Glorious now behold Him arise King and God and Sacrifice “Alleluia, alleluia!” Earth to the heavens replies.

Silent Night Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight. Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing, “Alleluia!” Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born. Silent night, holy night, Son of God loves pure light, Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

Up On the Housetop Up on the housetop reindeer pause, Out jumps good old Santa Claus. Down through the chimney with lots of toys, All for the little ones Christmas joys. Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn’t go? Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn’t go? Up on the housetop, click, click, click. Down through the chimney with good Saint Nick!

CAROL SING-ALONG Deck the Hall Deck the hall with boughs of holly Fa la la la la…. ‘Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la… Don we now are gay apparel, Fa la la la la…. Troll the ancient Yuletide carol, Fa la la la la…. See the blazing Yule before us, Fa la la la la…. Strike the harp and join the chorus, Fa la la la la…. Follow me in merry measure, Fa la la la la…. While I tell of Yuletide treasure, Fa la la la la….

O Christmas Tree O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, How lovely are your branches. Not only green when summer’s here, But in the coldest time of year. O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, How lovely are your branches.

Jingle Bells Dashing through the snow in a one horse open sleigh O’er the fields we go, laughing all the way; Bells on bobtail ring, making spirits bright; What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight. Oh! Jingle Bells! Jingle Bells! Jingle all the way! Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

Jolly Old St. Nicholas Jolly Old St. Nicholas lean your ear this way; Don’t you tell a single soul what I’m going to say; Christmas Eve is coming soon. Now you dear old man, Whisper what you’ll bring to me; tell me, if you can.

Let There Be Peace on Earth Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me, Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be. With God as our Father, family all are we. Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony. Let peace begin with me; let this be the moment now. With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow. To take each moment, and live each moment in peace eternally. Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

CHORUS PROFILES Wings of Song, the founding women’s chorus of Singers Marin, began as an amateur chorus of women that performed primarily a varied collection of classical, folk songs, show tunes, and popular standards for the elderly in Marin. Their purpose was to “bring back memories.” Favorites from that repertoire have been captured on their CD, Sentimental Journey. Today, the ensemble attracts singers of all ages and musical backgrounds. Membership is open to women who love to sing and enjoy being challenged by new repertoire, in addition to singing old standard classics. Two rehearsals are held each week to accommodate today’s busy schedules, and singers may attend one or both. Rehearsals are held Tuesday evenings, 7:00 to 9:00, and Wednesday mornings, 10:00 to 12:00 noon in Tiburon. Joyful Sound is the summer chorus and is open to everyone who loves to sing. There are no age limits, and families are encouraged to participate together. The repertoire is a mixture of lighter classical, folk songs, and popular standards. Several concerts are given at the end of the summer for retirement homes, in addition to a final concert and picnic for the general public. Rehearsals for the ten-week session begin mid-June and are held on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Tiburon.

VOCAL ARTS ACADEMY The “stars” of SingersMarin are the youth choruses. Divided by age levels and experience, these ensembles teach valuable skills through a repertoire of varied musical styles, and build confidence in performance as children share their gift of song with others. A friendly interview/audition is required for membership in order to determine readiness and commitment. Caroling Kids have been delighting Marin County residents since 1995, when these boys and girls, aged six to eight, first appeared on the holiday scene. This fall they have also been joined by Caroling Kiddies, our new chorus for singers aged four and five years old. These young singers rehearse the wonderful traditional music of the holidays, including Christmas carols, Hanukkah songs, and popular winter standards. In the spring, the same children become Twinkling Stars and Twinkling Starlets. The younger singers meet on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:25, and the older children rehearse from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays in Mill Valley, and Thursdays in San Rafael. Starlights is the entry level program for girls aged nine through middle school. This is the required next level chorus, and offers vocal training, music fundamentals, and performance opportunities to young singers who are new to choral singing. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday afternoons from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Mill Valley. Comets is our chorus for boys and young men, aged nine and up. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 – 7:00p.m. Celestial Voices is the younger advanced ensemble for girls aged ten through twelve with at least one semester in Starlights, or for those with prior musical training who are ready for a higher challenge. Singers perform music, both a cappella and accompanied, in three-part harmony. Rehearsals are held on Mondays from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Mill Valley. les étoiles is the young women’s advanced ensemble for teenage girls. Naming themselves back in 1997, they continue to hold true to their name, “the stars,” as they shine for audiences everywhere. Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Mill Valley, with sectionals on selected Saturdays. 23
