MERCER SLOUGH ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER (JUNE 20 – SEPTEMBER 2) 1625 118th Ave SE, Bellevue, WA 98005 | On a 320-acre wetland just north of I-90. The outdoor environment takes center stage at Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center, a collaboration between the City of Bellevue and Pacific Science Center. This LEED® Gold certified facility features spectacular views of the wetlands of Mercer Slough Nature Park, as well as state-of-the-art laboratories, classrooms and hiking trails. Did you know that owls can fly without making a sound, dragonflies spend most of their lives underwater, and a bunny’s ears are for more than listening? Dip for aquatic creatures, search the wetlands for animal signs and discover hidden burrows as you uncover fascinating facts about residents of the Slough. Hunt for hidden habitats and observe awesome oddities of animals all around you. Join us for a week of discovery into how adaptations help creatures survive!

Get in tune with the rhythms of nature! Recognize patterns and sounds that occur all around you—at the beach, in our pond and in the forest. Investigate the science of sound and how different animals use sound to survive. Experiment with sound waves, observe tidal cycles and listen for bird calls on a hike. Then, share your new knowledge at a concert starring your own naturethemed songs and hand-made recycled instruments. It’s going to be a rockin’ good time!

Geocaching Adventure Did you know there are thousands of secret geocaches hidden around our region? From the streams of the Cascade Foothills to the wetlands of Mercer Slough, investigate the macroinvertebrates and plankton that live in our local waterways. Camper Lunch Program

• Registration opens for Pacific Science Center Members on February 25 at 8:30 a.m.

We are pleased to offer this convenient option at Pacific Science Center’s main campus for full-day campers only (or campers participating in morning and afternoon half-day camps). Substitutions are not available. View our menu online at pacificsciencecenter.org/camps.

• Registration opens for the general public on March 1 at 8:30 a.m. • Early bird registration ends April 30. PRICING: After April 30, $30 added to price.

How to Register & Pay • All registrations must be made online at pacificsciencecenter.org/camps with Visa or MasterCard payment. • When registering, choose the grade level your child will be entering in the fall. • Full payment can be made when you register; otherwise, a $100 non-refundable deposit per camp is required, with the remaining balance due by April 30.

Sign up for the Camper Lunch Program at the time of registration. Lunch orders are not available by the day, and all orders or cancellations must be made by 4 p.m. on the Wednesday before your child’s camp start date. Cost $35 for 5-day camp week $28 for 4-day camp week Lunches are provided by Classic Catering, a preferred caterer for Pacific Science Center for the past ten years. They are locally owned and have been catering for over three decades in the Pacific Northwest.

Legends of Polliwog Pond

Teddy’s packing for an adventure to find out what it takes to be a scientist. Embark on a journey with your new stuffed friend, Teddy, and explore the world of science careers! Each evening, Teddy will venture out to make discoveries and then return to share photos, activities and stories with you the next day. Practice treating Teddy’s ouches at the doctor’s office and don your parka for a scientific expedition to the Arctic! Investigate animals with a zookeeper, and then design an airplane to soar through the clouds with a pilot. At the end of the week of exploration, Teddy will be ready to join you at home for adventures of your own!

Dip for aquatic creatures, search the wetlands for animal signs and discover hidden burrows as you find out fascinating facts about residents of the Slough. We have found a treasure map left behind by the Pirate of Polliwog Pond! We need your help to follow the map and find the treasures of the wetlands. Work with your treasure hunting team to solve puzzles and riddles that will direct you as you hunt for natural resources outside. Practice reading and creating maps while combing the trails for the plants, rocks and water that make the wetlands so unique. By the end of the week, your treasure chest will be filled with special objects to take home!

With an array of technology at your fingertips, learn what remote sensing is, how scientists use it, and how it can benefit our world. Explore the tools and platforms scientists use to collect data from the depths of our oceans to the farthest reaches of deep space. Use infrared technology to explore how firefighters track wildfires. Set up your own tracking experiment just like biologists use to track animals in the wild. Study satellite imagery of sea ice and collect data to compare with current sea surface conditions. Discover what the Doppler effect and a police radar gun have in common. This week offers hands-on opportunities with remote sensing technology and real-life applications to remote control cars, GPS, weather forecasting and current NASA missions on Mars. Tap into technology! Test your software engineering skills by creating, building, testing and prototyping robots. Spend the week in our robotics lab construct­ ing circuits, exploring basic mechanics, taking apart old electronics and discover­ ing breadboarding. Teen volunteers receive training, build their professional resume, meet high school service requirements and gain the rewarding experience of working with children and contributing to their community. This experience is especially valuable for teens who are interested in careers in science, technology or education. Teens must attend mandatory trainings on Saturdays in May, and be able to commit to at least two weeks during the summer.

How to Apply The application process includes a written portion and recommendations, followed by interviews. Environmental Science & Technology Practicum and Environmental Science Pathways The Environmental Science and Technology Practicum and Environmental Science Pathways programs offer exciting multi-week sessions for middle and high school students to explore skills and careers associated with environmental and clean technologies. Each session includes hands-on research investigations in field and laboratory settings, as well as direct exposure to high level professionals in clean technology and environmental science who share their cutting-edge work and discuss educational pathways in their respective fields.

LOVE OUR SUMMER CAMPS? Parents’ Night Out

Night Walks

Pacific Science Center offers a series of Parents’ Night Out events throughout the year. Spend a night out (or in!) while your child enjoys after-hours exploration of our exhibits, hands-on activities and a live science, planetarium or laser light show. Participants will be supervised in age groups by our experienced and enthusiastic staff all evening.

Once a month, bring your family to examine skulls and conduct experiments to discover the tricks nocturnal creatures use to survive at night. Then head out into the dark to listen for nocturnal creatures and participate in hands-on sensory activities aimed at exploring the wetland at twilight. Offered September through May for groups or families with children ages 5 and up.

Preschools Pacific Science Center and Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center offer school year-long play-based preschool programs for children ages 3–5. Proton Preschool in downtown Seattle uses science as a catalyst for learning and discovery. At Proton Preschool students explore the physical world while utilizing the amazing resources Pacific Science Center has to offer. Polliwog Preschool in Bellevue utilizes 320 acres of wetlands to explore seasonal themes and daily activities that meet the developmental needs of early learners, while fostering a love of nature and learning.

Scouts in the Wild Scouts in the Wild are after school and weekend programs targeted at groups of children in grades K–5. These groups could include scouts, camp fire groups, homeschool cooperatives or an informal group of friends. The programs are loosely based on a variety of badge requirements for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, but are fun and educational for any group interested in a guided hike through the Mercer Slough Nature Park.

NEW! Tech Workshop Coming This Spring New to Pacific Science Center for grades 6 – 8, we will offer a multi-week workshop series on Saturday mornings beginning in April. Spend time diving deep into a subject and put your new skills to the test with innovative challenges and experiments.
