What is a Cam Slide Unit? Cam: A mechanical device that converts one linear motion to another linear direction Cam Slide Unit: An in-die mechanical device in a metal stamping die that performs a mechanical function with attached tooling

Cam Applications Cams are typically used in the following applications • • • • • •

Piercing Trimming Flanging Forming Coining Holding

– Cams can be uses anywhere press motion must be redirected from one direction to another.

Types of Cams •External / outboard Vox style

• Aerial (NAAMS Standards)

•Internal / inboard box style

• Die mount (NAAMS Standards

•Mini-cam / barrel style

• Milfab

Cam Features • Hardened surfaces • Self-Lubricating wear surfaces • Soft mounting face on driver • Choice of mechanical or nitrogen springs with most models • Component parts marked with serial number for easy re-assembly • Positive returns on aerial and die mount models • Wide range of cam angles up to 60 degrees on Aerial • Product templates for easy die design on CD or Web Site

Bump Cams “Box” Style • Models 2 - 5 External and 23 -25 Internal • Box Style 11 -15 Internal

Gas Spring Features • External Spring for aid in stripping and returning unit • Gas spring for high stripping force • For use on larger holes or any area requiring a large stripping Force • Part must be held for stripping in some external means • Same footprint as outboard models • Standard Trigger when used 0 to 15 degrees • Special offset trigger used if mounted from 15 to 60 degrees

Top(PH) Mounted Units

Top Mounted Units

Inboard, Outboard, and Gas Spring models can all be set up for top mounting

Oil impregnated bronze bearings added to top mounting units for punch lubrication

Standard Trigger when used 0 to 15 degrees

Special offset trigger used if mounted from 15 to 60 degrees..

Choosing the Right Model • Material Thickness • Type of part • Punch stroke • Punch force or tonnage • Stripping Force • Point size • Point Shape

Other Considerations • Mounting angle and trigger style • Shaped punches need key flats • Oil impregnated available bearing on std. models • Stripper displacement • Special designs

Die-Mount / Lower Cams / Downstairs Cams:

• Cam is mounted to the die shoe or lower shoe. • Typically work at angles of 0 30 degrees

Die Mount Cams • • • • • • • •

Aerial / Upper / Upstairs / Flying • Popularized in transfer presses; reduce number of dies. • Cam is mounted to upper shoe or punch shoe of the die • Typically work at an angle of 30-60 degrees. • 0-30 degrees where work and cannot clear the cam if die-mounted.

Aerial Cams • • • • • • • • •

Other Types of Cams - Hydraulic

• Used for negative angle or very low shut height applications. • Non-press pierce/work unit. • Hydraulic power pack with a return spring. • Non-mechanical cam.

Other Types of Cams - Rotary

• Fill units where rotary slide moves into position to allow negative flanging • Rotary moves out of position to accommodate removal of the part or panel • Replaces drop slides with less space

Other Types of Cams - Giant • Used primarily in the automotive industry • Can handle multiple operations in one movement • Sizes range from 400 - 1600 mm • Some manufacturers use multiple large cams to make larger “Giant Cams”

RATIONALE FOR BUILDING YOUR OWN CAM SLIDE UNITS IN-HOUSE

• Slow Economy • Personal Satisfaction --- My Quality is Better • Special Applications • Perception of being cheaper

Bump Cam Slide • Nested in a Cam Body. • Soft Mounting Face. • Angular section to accept driver – Driver pushes slide so it moves or “travels” • Lubrication by self-lube wear surfaces

Bump Cam Body

• Houses the Slide ; affixed to the die ; does not move. – Slide “travels” within the Body • Provides the Accuracy of the Cam Work • Typical clearance between the Cam Body and the Slide is .002 (slip fit, no slop)

Bump Cam Driver

• The driver accepts the force of the press. • The angular section of the driver acts on the slide.

Bump Cam Spring Assembly

• Spring rod attaches to the slide • Spring compresses during the sliding action against endplate • Returns the slide when the die opens • Can aid in part stripping
