Calciphilous species of the genus Scapania in the Tatra Mountains (Western Carpathians, Poland and Slovakia): distribution and threats Piotr Górski & Jiří Váňa

Abstract: Górski, P. & Váňa, J. 2015. Calciphilous species of the genus Scapania in the Tatra Mountains (Western Carpathians, Poland and Slovakia): distribution and threats. – Herzogia 28: 28 –37. This study presents the distribution, both horizontal and vertical, of eight species of the genus Scapania occurring throughout the Tatra Mountains, on the strongholds of limestone rocks (S. aequiloba, S. aspera, S. brevicaulis, S. calcicola, S. cuspiduligera, S. gymnostomophila, S. helvetica, and S. praetervisa). A list of localities of each species is presented on the basis of the data published between 1814 and 2014 as well as our own herbarium data. An original key for identification of earworts was prepared, and selected features are also illustrated. Zusammenfassung: Górski, P. & Váňa, J. 2015. Kalkliebende Arten der Gattung Scapania in der Tatra (Westliche Karpaten, Polen und Slowakei): Verbreitung und Gefährdung. – Herzogia 28: 28 –37. Key words: Scapaniaceae, Tatra Mts, Western Carpathians.

Introduction Within the genus Scapania (Dumort.) Dumort., 24 species have been detected throughout the entire area of the Tatra Mts. The first study on the flora of liverworts occurring in the Tatra Mts (Wahlenberg 1814) lists merely Scapania undulata (L.) Dumort. in the whole group of 30 species. Before the end of the 19th century, 11 species from the Tatra Mts had already been identified. This was possible due to the first monograph of liverworts of the area (Szyszyłowicz 1885), but also to shorter floristic notes (Rehman 1864, Limpricht 1877a, Krupa 1882, 1888). The localities of very rare earworts were also identified in that period among others. They include S. apiculata Spruce or S. compacta (Roth) Dumort. The number of their localities in the Tatra Mts does not exceed 10 at the moment. In the 20th century, the first monographic studies in the Scapania genus appeared. Those worth mentioning include the Polish monograph of the genus Scapania (Hausbrandt 1949) covering the whole area of Poland (including the Polish Tatras but also West Ukraine and Belarus). Single localities of mountain species from the Slovak Tatra Mountains can also be found in the paper. The study encompasses the first records of Scapania crassiretis Bryhn or S. glaucocephala (Taylor) Austin var. scapanioides (C.Massal.) Potemkin [= S. scapanioides (C.Massal.)

Grolle] in Poland and the Tatra Mts. In the second part of the 20th century, the first specification of all known localities of earworts from the Slovak Tatras were already published. They also started to issue the first reviews of herbarium materials of the genus (Duda & Váňa 1968, 1969a, b, 1970a, b, 1971a, b, 1972). The group of the Tatra species reported the latest include Scapania aspera Bernet et M.Bernet (Duda & Váňa 1970a; the previous data are incorrect), S. praetervisa Meyl., S. gymnostomophila Kaal., S. parvifolia Warnst. (Szweykowski 1956a, b, 1960) and S. carinthiaca J. B.Jack ex Lindb. (Duda 1955a, b). Presently, S. undulata (L.) Dumort. is the most widespread in the whole area of the Tatra Mts (ca. 400 localities recorded between 1814 and 2013), and there are also S. aequiloba (Schwaegr.) Dumort. (ca 290), S. subalpina (Nees ex Lindenb.) Dumort. (ca 125), S. uliginosa (Sw. ex Lindenb.) Dumort. (ca 115) and S. umbrosa (Schrad.) Dumort. (ca 70) (Górski & Váňa 2014). One of the most influential factors of the distribution of plants in the Tatra Mts is their ground preference. Eight species within the genus Scapania grow on the strongholds of limestone rocks. They include Scapania aequiloba, S. aspera, S. brevicaulis Taylor, S. calcicola (Arnell et J.Perss.) Ingham, S. cuspiduligera (Nees) Müll.Frib., S. gymnostomophila, S. helvetica Gottsche and S. praetervisa. The objective of the following study is presenting the horizontal and vertical distribution of calciphilous species of the genus Scapania as well as determining their current threats in the massif. An original key for the determination of the species of this group is also presented.

Methods All known data regarding the occurrence of eight species of the genus Scapania that is S. aequiloba, S. aspera, S. brevicaulis, S. calcicola, S. cuspiduligera, S. gymnostomophila, S. helvetica and S. praetervisa have been arranged. This applies to the species occuring throughout the entire area of the Tatra Mts (both on the Polish and Slovak sides). The data include information published between 1814 and 2014 as well as the authors‘ own herbarium data collected in the Belianskie Tatra Mts and the limestone part of the Western Tatra Mts. Herbarium materials deposited in selected herbaria in Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic were also used (see list of localities). The degree of threat to the analyzed species throughout the Tatra Mts was specified with the use of categories and criteria of the IUCN (see IUCN 2001).

Area of research The Tatra Mountains are the highest mountain range in the whole Carpathians. They are a part of the Central-Eastern Carpathians. The length of the ridge of the Tatra Mts is close to 80 kms (56.5 kms in a straight line), while the maximum width is 18.5 kms (15 kms on average). The range is located on the border between Poland and Slovakia and covers an area of 785 km², including 610 km² (77.7 %) on the Slovak side and 175 km² (22.3 %) in Poland (RadwańskaParyska & Paryski 2004). The range is divided into: Belianskie Tatra Mts, High Tatra Mts and Western Tatra Mts. Sedimentary calciferous rocks cover mainly the northern part of the Tatras (Fig. 1). They, in turn, form the entire Belianskie Tatra Mts (= Belianskie Tatry Mts, Mt Havran, 2,154 m a.s.l.). The major limestone formations in the area of Poland in the Western Tatra Mts (= Tatry Zachodnie Mts) are formed by Mt Giewont (1,909 m a.s.l.), Kominiarski Wierch (1,829 m) and the northern parts of the mountain valleys (e.g., the Dolina Strążyska, Dolina Kościeliska, Dolina Chochołowska valleys). In the area of the Slovak Western Tatra Mts (= Západné

Tatry Mts), there is Mt Osobitá (1,687 m), Mt Sivý vrch (1,806 m) and the surroundings of the Bobrovecká dolina valley and the Juráňova dolina valley. The most significant limestone formations along the Polish-Slovak border include the Czerwone Wierchy Massif (Červené vrchy; as far as Mt Krzesanica / Kresanica, 2,123 m), Mt Bobrowiec (Bobrovec, 1,663 m) as well as Mt Furkaska (Veľka Furkaska, 1,491 m).

Distribution of the species Amongst the eight species of Scapania occuring on the strongholds of limestone rocks in the Tatra Mts, the most widespread are Scapania aequiloba (292 localities) and S. cuspiduligera (99). One of the most common species is also S. helvetica (139). Most of its localities are, however, found in the non-limestone part of the massif, mostly in the High Tatra Mts. The species that can be considered rare include S. calcicola (26) and S. brevicaulis (24). It is worth mentioning that S. calcicola occurs solely on limestone rocks (mainly in the Belianskie Tatras), while most of the localities of S. brevicaulis are located in the crystalline part of the Tatra Mts In the High Tatra Mts, S. gymnostomophila, so far considered very rare (Szweykowski 1958b), seems to have increased in numbers. Many localities of the species have been identified in the Belianskie Tatra Mts, including the peak of the highest mountain (Mt Havran, 2,154 m a.s.l., leg. P. Górski, 2012). Its further localities have been found on limestone rocks in the Western Tatra Mts and also on low rocks in the valley, which is lower than 1,000 m a.s.l. The rarest species in the group are Scapania praetervisa (three localities) and S. aspera (six localities). Various revised herbar data suggest the latter to have been mistaken for S. aequiloba. Following the criteria of IUCN, the species that are considered endangered in the area of the Tatra Mts include S. praetervisa (category: EN – endangered) and S. aspera (VU – vulnerable). The other species are not endangered (Tab. 1). Within the group, two liverworts (S. brevicaulis and S. calcicola) are uncommon and may be considered endangered in the future (category: NT – near threatened). Two distinct subgroups can be distingiushed in relation to the horizontal and vertical distribution of the genus Scapania discussed in this study. These are alpine species (most of the localities are found in the sub-alpine and alpine zones). They include: Scapania brevicaulis, S. cuspiduligera, S. gymnostomophila, S. helvetica and S. praetervisa. The other group, so called mountainwide species, consists of plants distributed quite evenly on all the mountain belts. They include S. aequiloba, S. calcicola and probably S. aspera (Fig. 3). A list with all localities of the investigated species in the Tatra Mts is given in the online supplement (Supplementary Table S1).

Acknowledgements Photos of Scapania aequiloba and S. aspera for this paper were done by Maciej Romański (Wigry National Park) whose help is gratefully acknowledged.
