Director’s Column Maintaining a Healthy Mind and Body at your Library

My mother used to say as she got older “Use it or lose it” and this issue of the Library Connection emphasizes the importance of keeping moving. It is important to exercise both your mind and your body. As I age, I realize the importance of keeping active. Sometimes I do want to just sit down and stay sitting down, but it is important to get up and move and get the blood flowing. It is also important to exercise your mind, and reading is a very good way to do this. We should all make it a practice to learn something new every day. The library is offering many opportunities to exercise both your body and your mind in the next three months. The Main Library and several of the branches offer a variety of exercise and weight loss classes. If you like yoga, dancing, or just exercising, one of the branches should fit your needs. Guyandotte Branch has the longest-running exercise group for seniors in the system, and it remains strong and vibrant. Many of the libraries have at least one reading and discussion group. All ages and all tastes in literature are covered. Be watching, because we are cooperating with Marshall University for a new series of programming entitled Muslim Journeys that will have a preview this spring but really get started in the late summer to early fall. The programs are sponsored by the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Another collaboration we are involved with is one of my favorite programs—the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. The United Way of the River Cities and the Cabell County Board of Education wrote a successful grant that will fund the Imagination Library for three years. This program operates from the Department of Education and the Arts and has been very successful in other counties in West Virginia. Because of funding issues some counties (such as Logan County) began the program a year or so ago but without sufficient funds the program has dropped back to the original thirteen counties. Children may register at any library in Cabell County. Any child from birth until the child reaches his/her fifth birthday may register and receive a new book in the mail every month. There are no income eligibility restrictions. All we ask is that the mailing address remain current. Be sure any child you know that resides in Cabell County signs up for this wonderful program!!

Farewell Friends

Here I am talking to you again about the Friends of the Library: what are they all about, and how important is it that we support this really excellent library system that we have here in Cabell County? This issue is going to address health and well-being. I have a situation in my own life that is an adjunct to that topic. As we live longer and longer in our society, many families are eventually faced with making difficult decisions about their elderly parents and how to take care of them to keep them safe. I am in that situation right now, and I have made a decision that I will move to the Northern Panhandle to take care of my 93 year old mother. She is able to take care of herself now but things are getting much harder for her. She is starting to need more help getting to doctor’s appointments, etc. This was a very difficult decision to make but feels like the right thing to do. Unfortunately, that means I have had to resign as President of the Friends of the Cabell County Public Library Board. I hope to return to Huntington at some time in the future and will seek to help with the library again at that time. However, even though I will be a long way away, I will always remain a Friend of this library. I will continue to renew my membership each year and make donations of support. It is still early in 2013, and if you haven’t already renewed your membership in the Friends, please do so now. If you aren’t a current member, please consider joining us. You are such an important part of what we are doing – your dues, your donations, and your participation in our book sales by donating books or buying books is the way we raise funds to support the library. So, as this is my “swan song” column, I wish to thank the people currently serving on the board. They are a dedicated group of people who care about this library and this community. So please, continue your support and interest in this library. It is really a worthwhile thing to be doing for your family, your community, and yourself. It’s been such a complete pleasure serving on this board for 30+ years, and hopefully I will be able to return someday and continue that work. So stay healthy and fit and always support your public library. Thank you,

Judy K. Rule, Director [email protected]

Lets Move! “The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake.” - First Lady Michelle Obama at the Let’s Move! launch on Feb. 9, 2010 Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Combining comprehensive strategies with common sense, Let’s Move! is about putting children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years. This site gives parents helpful information and fosters environments that support healthy choices; provides healthier foods in our schools; ensures that every family has access to healthy, affordable food; and helps kids become more physically active. Everyone has a role to play in reducing childhood obesity, including parents, elected officials from all levels of government, schools, health care professionals, faith-based and community-based organizations, and private sector companies. Your involvement is key to ensuring a healthy future for our children.

Where to start Let’s Move! and Meetup Everywhere make it easy for parents, teachers, chefs, elected officials, and others to take action by organizing or participating in face-toface meetings dedicated to solving the problem of childhood obesity in their local communities. A Let’s Move! Meetup is flexible – a mayor may host a town hall, a parent could organize a physical activity event, or a chef can teach a healthy cooking class – the idea behind a Let’s Move! Meetup is to spark a conversation about childhood obesity in your community. To learn more visit http://www.letsmove.gov. 3

Got Aches and Pains?

Whenever the non-specific aches and pains of everyday living kick in, many of us turn to the Internet for health information. This is not always the best thing to do. Several times in the past few years, I have self-diagnosed, and then drawn up plans for the funeral, contacted my loved ones, and made arrangements for my pets. What I was suffering from was what one physician has called “Google cancer.” Don’t worry, it doesn’t exist. However, this does raise the question of where to find reliable information on health issues. One of the databases offered by the library is Consumer Health Complete. Consumer Health Complete is one of the Ebsco-Host family of databases to which the library has access. It allows patrons to search for their own terms, use a list of terms provided by the proprietors, a health highlight (a kind of health related thought or fact of the day), access a number of popular sourcesThe AMA Medical Encyclopedia, the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book, Fitness After 40, and more-and find information about surgical procedures, medications, and even smoking cessation programs. Now, admittedly, with this information available, will it stop Google cancer? In my case, no. But what Consumer Health Complete really does allow a user to be is a more informed consumer of health information. This can only be a good thing if and when an illness or injury occurs. --Daivd Owens, Reference Librarian http://cabell.lib.wv.us/pages/aa-databases.html

Tabata . . . What’s That? “Tabata” is the name of a particular type of workout program that provides similar health benefits to that of cardio workouts, but Tabata has a bit more spice. Instead of hours upon hours or exercise, Tabata can be completed in 4 minutes. Tabata falls under the category of high intensity training or high intensity interval training. Tabata was founded by a Japanese scientist named Izumi Tabata and fellow colleagues at a department of physiology in Japan. After conducting many tests they discovered that not only did high intensity interval training have more of an impact on the aerobic systems; it had an impact on the anaerobic systems as well. Any exercise can be incorporated into the Tabata training. However the basic outline of the Tabata training method are as follows:

Don’t Give Up!

Everyone knows that getting fit is one of the most popular new year’s resolution. So my question to you: are you thinking about giving up on your New Year’s Resolution of getting healthy? Don’t! The library can help you on the path. Cookbooks, workout DVD’s, and relaxing meditation music CDs are just a few of the items available to be checked out at Cabell County Public Library. You can either check out our collection on our website, cabell.lib.wv.us, or come to the library yourself to browse. Just think! If you come in and browse our collection, you are also burning calories from walking around. After all, according to Dr. Joan Vernikos, the author of Sitting Kills, the action of simply standing up instead of sitting all day will help you on your way to becoming healthy. Dr. Vernikos recommends creating a “natural lifestyle of constant, natural movement that resists the force of gravity.” To help resist the force of gravity, the library also has programs dedicated to leading a healthy lifestyle from an exercise class for seniors at Guyandotte or a yoga class at the main library. The library is here to help the community. The United States Department of Health and Human Resources recommends that people that choose to do moderate activities should do 2 hours and 30 minutes a week or one hour and 15 minutes of intense activities. Do one of the hours at the library. Now there is no excuse not to complete your New Year’s resolution about living a healthy lifestyle.
