WHY BUY FROM THIS SALE? Pick of the Remuda Before the decision is made to purchase, everyone makes a choice. Some people will devote considerable effort to research, value received and market study, while others buy on impulse. No matter how you arrive at your decision, the “AQHA Best of the Remuda Sale” makes the process easier. Each award-winning ranch has selected horses that represent their unique breeding program. You decide.

Yearlings From an investment standpoint, your purchase will include pedigree, conformation and the largest potential for overall increased value. Ranches are able to offer better bred yearlings at auction due to the reduced cost to bring a horse to this market point. Yearlings have been halter broke, loaded and have experienced their first trip away from home. They are now ready to begin their education in the functional

part of their lives. The development skills you employ to advance their training will return later as they are broke and trained in the many disciplines of the Quarter Horse.

Two & Three Year Olds The combination of many patient hours spent breaking and laying the foundation for a great performance horse, is packaged in this product. These ranches are offering you a chance to purchase a horse that has a lot of the “guess work” removed. Their value has increased as you can now see how they handle and perform the basic tasks required of them. This is the point where a buyer can take advantage of the time and labor that the ranches have invested to lay the groundwork and begin to sharpen the horse in more specific areas of performance.

Riding Horses Few will have a chance to really enjoy what is offered here. Each day we all wish to own and ride a

top using horse. This is it — the culmination of years of hard work and hard knocks. Each of these horses has a unique story from their early start to their educational experiences that make them so valued.

Broodmares & Stallions Any ranch that the AQHA has selected to receive this prestigious award has based their breeding program on a strong mare foundation complemented by stallions which improve the breeding traits they strive to produce. These broodmares and stallions carry the bloodlines that have made these ranches so successful. Here is a chance to reach into these herds and tap into hundreds of years of genetics that have developed the great American Quarter Horse. As you make your choice, remember the opportunity that is being offered is unmatched. From the potential value of the yearling to the inherent worth of the breeding stock from these programs, buy and enjoy a dream we all share.

All of the Consignors to the AQHA Best of the Remuda Sale are Ranching Heritage Breeders!

Brown Ranch has been producing some of the most superior cattle and Quarter Horses in the industry. This family run and operated ranch was originally established in Throckmorton, Texas, by R.H. Brown in 1895, who then sent his son R.A. Brown Sr. to manage the ranch. Upon his death, the reins were passed down to R.A. “Rob” Brown Jr. and his wife Peggy who steadfastly guided the ranch’s course for many years. Recently, the reins were passed again and now the ranch is owned and operated by their four children, the fifth generation of the Brown Ranch. This seamless transition and unbroken chain validates Rob and Peggy’s lifelong ambition to “keep the ranch in the family and the family in the ranch.” In fact, the backbone of the workforce on the Brown Ranches is also family – members of the sixth generation – while the seventh generation of Brown cowkids proudly trot along behind! Over the years, R.A. Brown Ranch has been honored with some of the most prestigious awards in the industry including: Cattle Business of the Century Award and the AQHA Best Remuda Award. In addition, Rob Brown was recognized as one of the nation’s top ranchers with the Golden Spur Award. The R.A. Brown Ranch has also shaped the American Quarter

Horse industry. R.A. Brown Sr. is credited as being one of the founders of the AQHA and his son Rob was elected President in 1995. Fittingly, both have been inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. Keeping the leadership tradition alive is Rob A. Brown, who is currently on the AQHA Board of Directors. The R.A. Brown Ranch has always made it a priority to raise the kind of horse that cowboys want. Cow sense, heart, stamina, athletic ability and gentle disposition are a must. A horse who can handle all aspects of ranching is a valuable asset. The increased popularity of versatile ranch horse competitions has provided an outlet to showcase the horse program we’ve had for decades. R.A. Brown raised horses have accomplished the following: AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge class winners, AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse winners, ASHA National Collegiate Champions, Texas Ranch Roundup Top Horse, as well as NRCHA, RHAA and SHOT money earners. In addition to these, we were able to secure the AQHA Reserve World Championship title in Versatility Ranch Horse this past year. The five head that we are selling today are a prime example of what we are trying to produce: strong, sound, trainable cow horses that are sure to please in most any setting.

BRO OK S HODGES | PO BOX 120, GU T H R I E , T EX A S 79236 806-284-2223 | T H EPI TC H FOR K R A NC H.COM From all accounts, the Pitchfork Land & Cattle Company would not exist were it not for Daniel Baldwin Gardner and Eugene Flewellyn Williams, both cousins and life-long friends. They were born in the South in 1851 to plantation-owning families. In 1871, tales of abundant opportunity in Texas lured Gardner to Fort Griffin, located near present-day Albany. In February of 1877, Gardner was one of 17 men who drafted plans for what was to become one of the most powerful and prestigious livestock organizations in the world, which is known today as the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. In the summer of 1881, Gardner learned that Jerry Savage, who had been running cattle on the South Wichita River under a Pitchfork brand, was interested in selling land, equipment and stock. Needing capital, Gardner thought of his boyhood friend and cousin, Eugene Williams. In 1881, Williams journeyed to Fort Worth and after a dinner meeting announced he was ready to close the deal, without seeing either the land or the cattle. Williams said he was investing in the venture solely because he had the highest regard for his cousin, Dan Gardner. Williams wrote a check and took the night train back to St. Louis.

6

The property Gardner and Williams purchased included 2,600 longhorn cattle, 70 horses, wagons and camp equipment, but little land. They did obtain rights to the ranch that bordered the South Wichita River in eastern Dickens and western King counties. Wishing to expand, but lacking capital, the two men found two willing investors from Texas, A.P. Bush, Jr. and Samuel Lazarus and two from St. Louis, A.D. Brown and W. H. Carroll. In St. Louis on December 29, 1883, the partners gathered to adopt the by-laws and elect officers of the newly formed corporation known as the Pitchfork Land & Cattle Company. Gardner was chosen to be general manager, a position he held until his death in June of 1928. Six managers have filled the vacancy left by Gardner. These included Rudolph Swenson, Virgil Parr, D. Burns, Jim Humphreys and Bob Moorhouse. Today, the ranch is managed by Brooks Hodges. The Pitchfork Land & Cattle Company stretches some 181,000 acres in three west Texas counties and newly acquired acreage in Waurika, Oklahoma known as the Pitchfork OK Ranch. The descendants of Eugene Williams continue to operate the 133-year-old ranch in the same conservative manner as did the ranch’s founders.

CR AIG & JODY H AY T HOR N | 193 H AY T HOR N DR I VE, ART H U R, NEBR ASK A 69121 308-355-4000 | H AY T HOR N.COM The historic Haythorn Ranch legacy began more than a century and a quarter ago as a dream in the mind of a young stowaway, Harry Haythornthwaite, of Lancaster, England. In 1876, at age 16, Harry was discovered as a stowaway on a ship headed for America. The Captain put him to work caring for some Hereford bulls being shipped to Texas. No stranger to livestock or hard work, Harry’s ability impressed the Captain and upon arrival, he was dispatched to accompany the bulls to their destination. Over the next eight years, he worked as a cowhand, making four trail drives north out of Texas. Two of the drives went to Kansas and two to Ogallala, Nebraska. On his last drive to Ogallala, with only his savings and what he could carry on a horse, he decided to strike out on his own. He bought a livery stable, shortened his name to Haythorn and married Emma Gilpin of Arthur County. After just a couple of years, the newlyweds sold the livery barn and he went to work as a wagon boss for P.A. Yeast. He took his wages in cattle and Emma cooked at the Yeast Ranch for 25 cents a meal, if there were more than 10 men at the table. Less than that, she cooked for free. Nearly every penny they could pinch was put aside to buy land. In 1884, Harry and Emma filed on a land grant section four miles west of Arthur, Nebraska, and an American ranching dynasty was born. Harry and Emma had two sons, Walt Percival and Harry Walker

8

Haythorn. Though different in disposition, as well as ability, both boys were accomplished cowboys and continued the ranching tradition. Today Haythorn Land and Cattle Co. is spread over two ranches in two Nebraska counties. Present day manager, Craig Haythorn is the fourth generation of Haythorns to manage this historic sandhills ranch. He and his wife, Jody, and 5th generation Sage, his wife Kelley, and Cord manage the day to day events trying to preserve cowboy traditions in an ever changing and increasingly challenging industry. Horses have played a pivotal role in the ranch’s survival ever since Harry loaded his saddle on a train and headed for Baker, Oregon, where he gathered up 500 head and trailed them back to Nebraska. Since then, the Haythorn name has been synonymous with good, working ranch horses. The Haythorn Ranch was the first Nebraska ranch to register Quarter Horses, and today is one of the largest breeders of the American Quarter Horse in America. In addition to the Quarter Horses, the Haythorns use Belgian draft horses. The 6-horse hitches pull the feed wagons in the winter. The day to day life is much the same for the Haythorn cowboys today as it was over a century ago. The family has taken great pride in preserving the rich heritage and tradition of its founding father. These rolling Nebraska sandhills will be home to generations of Haythorns to come.

The brothers renamed it Tongue River Ranch (TRR) because of its location on the Tongue (South Pease) River, aptly named in reference to black tongue, a nineteenth century disease which wiped out many buffalo in the region. Folklore also states that the many different Indian tribes in the area nicknamed the river “River of Many Tongues” which was later shortened to Tongue River. Present day owner, Millard Morris purchased Tongue River at its current size of 89,000 acres in 1997, and added the 30,000 acre Big Baldy New Mexico division in 2007. Paramount to the Tongue River Ranch operation is their outstanding horse program. Tongue River Ranch has concentrated on

raising horses that are not only well built animals but are, above all, highly intelligent and incredible athletes. This is evidenced by the fact that the Tongue River Ranch Quarter Horses have led us to 9 WRCA finals, which included two Top Horse Titles. Tongue River Ranch Quarter Horses have also received Champion and Reserve Champion Titles at the RHAA finals held in Abilene, Texas. We have been privileged to have been awarded the most Top Horse Awards in the 3 largest and most recognized Ranch Rodeos in Texas: Best of the West Invitational Ranch Rodeo at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, Texas Ranch Roundup in Wichita Falls, Texas, and the Western Heritage Classic in Abilene, Texas. Tongue River Ranch takes great pride in preserving the land for future generations. Continuing tradition and preserving history is a way of life, not a job at Tongue River Ranch.

MULESHOE RANCH JOHN R. ANDER SON | PO BOX 134, GAI L, TEX AS 806-756-4436

W.D. Johnson, Sr., started the Muleshoe brand when he bought the Blackwater division of the XIT Ranch on the Blackwater draw about 1900. The Santa Fe Railroad built a road from Lubbock to Clovis, NM which ran through the middle of the ranch known as the Muleshoe Ranch. By that time Mr. Johnson had sold the ranch to E.K. Warren and son from Three Oaks, Michigan. Warren gave one section for a town-site when the railroad was built. This town was named Muleshoe and still goes by that name. When Mr. Johnson sold the ranch, he maintained the Muleshoe brand. Around 1908, Mr. Johnson and Mr. R.M. Clayton formed a partnership, the Clayton and Johnson Co. and bought a ranch in Borden County in 1913 continuing to use the Muleshoe brand. What

is now the Muleshoe Ranch was originally open grazing and used by the Magnolia Land and Cattle Co. prior to 1894. In 1945 Mr. Jerry Clayton, one of R.M. Clayton’s sons, bought the Muleshoe Ranch from another son, A.M. Clayton. In 1957, Jerry Clayton sold the ranch to his daughters, Jere Hubbard and Barbara Anderson. In 1994, Rich and Barbara became the sole owners of the ranch. John Anderson and his wife, Kevva, live on the ranch. Their three children were also raised on the ranch. Clay John and his wife, Krista, live on the ranch and help run it as well. The younger daughter, Bailey Halverson, and her husband Jake, help with the working ranch program also. Whitney Fusotn and her husband, Kye, carry on in the ranching industry as they work for the Matador Ranch.

W.H. GREEN CATTLE CO. BI LLY GREEN | P.O. BOX 385, ALBAN Y, TEX AS 76430 325-762-2770

In the 1870’s, Thomas Henry Green from Hill County was running his stock on the open range of West Central Texas, including a herd of horses located in Western Stephens County, on Hubbard Creek. Since the open range was being fenced, he sent his young son, William Henry, a recent 1885 graduate of Trinity University, to locate, gather, sell the horses and return to Hill County. Henry did everything his father told him except return to Hill County. He was so impressed with the Hubbard Creek country that he used the money from the horses to lease and later purchase the beginning of the Green Ranches. When W.H. Green first acquired a herd

of cattle branded “J” on the left hip, he adopted that brand. Today, W.H. Green Cattle Company still brands the J and is managed by Billy Green, grandson of the ranch’s founder. The ranch runs Hereford, Angus and black baldy cows and purchases yearlings each year. Horses are a very important part of daily ranch operations and are furnished by an award-winning broodmare band. The American Quarter Horse Association honored the Green horses with the 2002 AQHA/Bayer Best Remuda Award. Horses are bred to withstand the daily rigors of ranch use as well as excel in the performance horse world.

In December of 1882, the Matador Land and Cattle Company was formed by a group of Scottish investors. In 1951 it was sold to Lazard Freres and Company of London. In 1953, Fred C. Koch purchased three subdivided corporations of land. Mr. Koch also bought the Flying V cattle brand and the “50” horse brand, both of which were used by the Scots during their 70-year ownership.

Today the Matador Ranch covers about 130,000 acres in the rolling plains just off the caprock around Matador, Texas. It is managed to produce beef through its cow-calf and stocker operations. In addition, the ranch has a small broodmare band. It focuses on producing horses that are athletic, versatile and have the right disposition to produce horses that are dependable.

TULE RANCH 9689 T U LE R A NC H ROAD, T U LI A, T EX A S 79088 806-633-4395

Billy Cogdell was raised on his families ranch north of Snyder, Texas. Billy was extremely involved in the ranch and had a love for the cowboy way of life and a good horse. In the fifth year of a terrible drought, Billy’s father, D.M. Cogdell Sr., while looking to find better pasture, remembered from his youth the lush grass of the Texas Panhandle plains. As a result, in 1954, he purchased the Tule Ranch, east of Tulia, Texas, as well as other Panhandle interests and moved his cattle there. When D.M. Sr., passed away in 1964, his two sons, D.M. Jr., and Billy took over the ranching operation in the Panhandle. In the mid 1970s, they dissolved their partnership; Billy and his wife Bette kept the original Tule Ranch. Billy continued to expand the Tule Ranch, which lies in the rugged Palo Duro and Tule Canyons, to encompass more than 160,000 acres to run 3,000 mother cows. D.M. Cogdell, Sr. knew the value of a good horse, so in 1951 he purchased 10 yearling fillies and a yearling stallion sired by Wimpy from the King Ranch, which he name Solis Cogdell. Later that year, D.M., Sr., went to the Waggoner Ranch and bought a son of Pretty Buck, named Peppy Buck. He also bought a daughter of King from the Hankins Brother. That group of horse laid the foundation of the Tule Ranch’s top remuda that the Cogdells continue to develop to this day. A best-loved hobby - one that has had a huge impact on the ranch’s breeding program - was found in the sport of cutting. Billy won his first show at the young age of 12 and for the next eight years, showed his ranch horse whenever he could. Billy contracted polio at the age of 20, leaving him partially paralyzed. However, this did not deter him from his passion of ranching and raising the best cattle and horses he could. As a result, the image of Billy that most people remember is either him in the cake wagon making sure things when smoothly, or in his wheelchair

enjoying a cutting or ranch rodeo. So it was in 1977, while at the NCHA Futurity sale, Billy purchased a little 13.2 hand mare named Lynx Melody who went on to win the NCHA Futurity the following year. She also won the NCHA Derby and was the 1980 NCHA World Champion Mare, which lead to lifetime earnings of more than $113,000. After retiring to the broodmare band, Lynx Melody’s foals earned more than $1 million in cutting competition. This was in large part to a filly she produced by Peppys Boy 895, named Shania Cee. Shania Cee was crowned the 1999 NCHA Futurity Champion, making Lynx Melody the only mare ever to win the Futurity and produce a Futurity Champion. Shania Cee went on to win over $400,000 and is now an integral addition to the broodmare band. Her foals have had success in the cutting pen, as well as, ranch horse competitions. Today the broodmare band reflects the Cogdell’s interest in the cutting arena, as well as in ranch horses, because to the Cogdell’s they are on in the same. The country is rough and the pastures are big, so a horse you can count on is a valued asset. Cattle are gathered and calves are branded all with horses and in the fall, during shipping time, some cattle are driven close to 15 miles up and out of the canyon, where the truck awaits. Some of these horses have gone on to success in SHOT, RHAA, and Ranching Heritage Challenge competitions, as well as being selected as Top Horse at several ranch rodeos. Billy passed away in 2003, but he left a legacy in both the ranching and cutting horse industries that continues on in the lives of his four children and multiple grandchildren. The entire Cogdell family is back on the ranch and they operate it as their father and grandfather did before them – stewards of the land the Lord has blessed them with.

STUART RANCH TER RY ST UA RT FOR ST | PO BOX 247, WAU R IK A, OKLAHOM A 73573 580-228-3272 | ST UART R ANCH.COM

In 1868, Robert Clay Freeny left Boggy Depot, Indian Territory to settle on the “Redlands” on what is today the Atoka/Bryan county line, north and east of Caddo Oklahoma. This country would become the future headquarters for the Stuart Ranch, which has now grown into a diversified operation spanning four counties in the great state of Oklahoma. The headquarters today is in Jefferson County, near Waurika Oklahoma. Robert Clay registered one of the first brands in the Choctaw Nation; today cattle are branded with a 7S on the left hip and the horses branded with an S on their left shoulder. The Stuart Ranch was designated an “Oklahoma Centennial Ranch” by the Historical Society and in 2012 was inducted into the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame. The ranch has also been honored for its stewardship in grazing management by the Society of Range Management. The ranch operates a commercial cow herd comprised of Hereford and Black Baldys. We calve in a 60-day season in both the spring and fall. Calves are weaned and we have the options of wheat or grass. Replacement heifers are also a primary focus in our operation and are available open or bred. Our no-till wheat pasture gives us the flexibility to better use our native grass, take in gain cattle and gives us options on timing as to the marketing of home-raised calves. The ranch has a drought plan in place and does not deviate from it. In 1949, Bob Stuart began to upgrade the horses on the ranch with the purchase of Big Shot Dun from the Waggoner Ranch. Son O Leo and Port Command crossed back on the Big Shot Dun and Breezy

Buck mares laid a solid foundation for the broodmare band. Today the ranch maintains around 30 mares of which all have proven themselves on the ranch and/or in the show pen with the majority being producers and performers. The ranch strives to produce versatile horses with eye appeal, good structure, conformation and agility. Stuart Ranch has produced numerous World Champions, superior event horses, NRCHA, NCHA and RHAA money earners, national high point titles and the 1995 Superhorse, Genuine Redbud. In 2014, Miss T Stuart (1961) - (Breezy Buck x Pretty Sally x Big Shot Dun) will be inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. In 1995 the ranch was honored to be the recipient of the Best Remuda Award. The ranch participates in the Ranching Heritage Breeders program and has won the Heritage Challenge event twice. With abundant populations of whitetail deer, turkey (both Eastern and Rio Grande), feral hogs, quail, ducks and geese, the ranch began to pursue another enterprise. Stuart Ranch Outfitters was developed to oversee all the management of the wildlife populations and to provide a guide service. Stuart Ranch Outfitters is continually enhancing accommodations and creating unique hunting packages. Being good stewards of the resources God has given us to manage, is a commitment to which the ranch is dedicated. As the oldest ranch in the state of Oklahoma under continuous family ownership, the ranch is proud of its tradition and heritage and looks forward to an exciting future of excellence.

W.T. WAGGONER ESTATE, INC. T R ACE C R I BBS | PO BOX 2130, V ER NON, T EX A S 76384 940-552-2521 EX T. 252 | WAGG ONER R A NC H.COM

W.T. Waggoner Estate, Inc. was started in 1849 by Dan Waggoner. Dan began buying land in western Wise County in 1870. In 1873 Dan and his 21-year-old son, W.T. (Tom) drove a herd of cattle to market in Kansas, and returned with $55,000. This was considered to be a fortune at that time. It was seed money to start an empire. As the land was cleared for settlement, they gradually moved to the west, buying grasslands, having holdings in six counties. Dan passed away in 1902, and W.T. Waggoner continued to expand and operate his ranching interests until 1923, when he formed what is known today as the W.T. Waggoner Estate. The W.T. Waggoner Estate stretches into six counties, with headquarters in Vernon, Texas. Main interests of the company are ranching, oil and approximately 26,000 acres in cultivation. The horses are bred for working ranch purposes and many still carry the

bloodline of the famous Quarter Horse, Poco Bueno. Descendants of Dan Waggoner sold the sprawling ranch to Kroenke Ranches in February of 2016. Kroenke Ranches now owns ranches in Canada and the US. The main office for the ranch is located in Vernon, Texas. The headquarters for the ranch, known as Zacaweista, is located 13 miles south of Vernon. The ranch consists of approximately 525,000 contiguous acres which makes it the largest ranch in the nation under one fence. It employs approximately 96 people, ranging from cowboys, farm hands, oil field workers, to office staff. The cowherd is comprised of 35% straight Hereford with 65% Angus cross. Ranch management constantly strives to implement proven modern techniques into the operation, making the W.T. Waggoner Estate, Inc. one of the largest cow/calf enterprises in the country.

Haythorn Ranch Company is located in the Sandhills of Nebraska, along the Platte River Valley near Maxwell. It is comprised of 20,000 acres of grass, meadow hay, and sweet water from the Ogallala Aquifer. We are primarily a cow/calf operation running up to 1500 mother cows. The Haythorns have been ranching in the Nebraska Sandhills since 1884. Harry Haythornthwaite (later shortened to Haythorn) stowed away on a ship bound for the U.S.A. at the age of 16, and when found he was put to work caring for the Hereford bulls that were on board. Docking in Galveston, Texas, he went to work for the rancher who owned the bulls. He later made four cattle drives on the Western trail, two of which passed through Ogallala, Nebraska. Harry spent his wages on a livery stable in Ogallala where he met and married Emma Gilpin. Harry and Emma filed on a homestead in

1884 thus beginning the long legacy of Haythorn Ranches. The Haythorns have been breeding American Quarter Horses since before the registry’s inception in 1940. We pasture breed 15 to 25 mares a year and run about 20 to 40 saddle horses in our remuda. Our horses are bred for use on the ranch, not to follow the whims of the market. They must have good bones and feet, plenty of muscle, a kind disposition and lots of cow sense. All this translates into versatile horses that can be used by a wide variety of people for anything that can be done on horseback. All of us at Haythorn Ranch are proud of our work and proud of our industry. Cowboys and horses have been part of the Haythorn Legacy for over 130 years and will continue to be for generations to come. Haythorn Ranch is entering the 6th generation of traditional ranching.

The Spade Ranch legacy began more than 120 years ago, in 1889, when DeKalb, Illinois, natives Colonel Isaac Ellwood and his son, W.L. Ellwood, made a simple business trip to West Texas. In 1874 Ellwood became one of the original patent holders of barbed wire when he and his neighbor developed an economical way to keep livestock out of the area’s many farms. The invention quickly changed the Midwest farmland, but the Ellwoods saw a burgeoning market in the vast expanses of the West Texas plains. Among the ranchers the Ellwoods met were the Snyder brothers. The brothers must have been shrewd businessmen themselves because not only did they resist Ellwood’s sales pitch, they convinced him to buy their 130,000-acre ranch. By the 1960’s the Spade Ranches began a planned crossbreeding program in the cow-calf operation that continues today-although adjusting with changing market demand. Today, the ranches use composite bulls (Simnn/Angus and Balancer) crossing the heifers from

one mating to the other composite. This maintains a high level of heterosis while producing a uniform calf crop, a stable breed composition and eliminating the need to buy replacement heifers from other sources. Today’s horse breeding program crosses the daughters of their own son of Peptoboonsmal with their son of High Brow Cat and vice versa. The objective is to use unrelated bloodlines to produce functional ranch horses with lots of cow sense and bottom. The Spade Ranches today consist of six outfits: the original Renderbrook Spade in Mitchell, Sterling and Coke counties; Borden Spade in Borden County; Wagon Creek Spade in Throcknnorton County; North Spade in Briscoe and Motley counties; Panhandle Spade in Roberts County and Alpine Spade in Brewster and Presidio counties, totaling about 275,000 acres. Wesley Welch is the President and C.E.O. of Spade Ranches and the board of directors include five great-great grandchildren of Isaac Ellwood along with outside directors.
