July 2016

Letter from the Principal Derek Pierce Dear Casco Bay Families and Friends: The greatness of the 2015-2016 school year at Casco Bay High School can be captured by some traditional metrics. In our 11th year, we finally achieved the “full size” we imagined when we opened, just under 100 students per grade level. Ten of our original thirteen faculty members remain on staff. We had a 172 8th graders submit a commitment form for Casco Bay, our highest ever. We were named one of the top ten high schools in Maine again Dates To Remember by US News and World Report. We became a credentialed school within the EL Education •August 15th: Fall Sports Trynational network. This spring, the Class of 2017 posted the highest average SAT scores in outs •August 23-24th – CBHS Facul- school history, well above district, state and national averages. 98% of the Class of 2016 ty Summer Institute graduates were accepted to college. •August 24th: Parent and Student Input on 2015-16 Expeditions (tentatively, 2:00-3:30pm) August 25th: Parent Advisory Group: (5:00-6:00pm) •August 25th : Casco Bay Quest Information Night (6:30 to 6:30pm) •August 26th - CBHS Beautification Day (9am-3pm) •August 29th - New Student Ice Cream Social: 6:00-7:00pm (CBHS Great Space) •August 31st - 1st Day of School •September 8th – New CBHS Parent Social (6:00-7pm) •September 15th: CBHS Open House (6:30pm) •September 20th--23rd - The Senior Quest •September 27th-September 30th - The Freshmen Quest

But student work remains the best reflection of who we are. The 3-D excellence of our students – and faculty – is clearer when you get to see one of our culminations. And the last month of school was teeming this year: the freshmen shared their positions on bio-ethics at UNE; the sophomores premiered podcasts which connected the Civil Rights movement to the Black Lives Matter movement – and then followed that with Sophomore Passage Presentations. The juniors created a gorgeous, full-length documentary about local heroes in Detroit's renaissance. Still, the most comprehensive, accurate and affecting depiction of who we are is through the Seniors' Final Words. Final Word may be our most glorious tradition at CBHS, a chance for each senior to say precisely what needs to be said on the verge of one of life's great milestones. Here's a sampling of what the Class of 2016 had to say - about themselves, their classmates, their school and their world. “Crew loved me more than I loved myself.” ~Maeve Porter Holliday “When we as a school talk about community and how we are crew, a family, it’s not just talk. We back it up with the way we treat and listen to each other.” ~ Faith King “I’ve grown into someone I’m proud to be.” ~ Ryan Schultz

“Casco is a place where not only do I learn, but I enjoy myself while doing so. Casco has shaped me, helped me grow, taught me how to listen to others, speak my mind, respect opposing viewpoints, and think critically both about myself and the world around me.” ~ Nate Hesselink “I’m ready to graduate because I know what I am losing.” ~ Maddy Bennett

“I am ready, somehow, for everything I want to create, for everyone I want to meet, and everything that I want to be.” ~ Emmet Lynch

“I love the way this school has changed me.” ~ Emma Hindall “Mom, I hear you brag about me to your friends, but let me tell you right here, right now that you haven’t seen anything yet.” ~ Marta Haydym “At Casco Bay I could stand up and choose a seat of my own, whether it be a public speaker’s seat, an engineer’s seat, an artist’s seat, the community Casco sofa or stand on my own two feet if I must. I can call any place my own.” ~ Laurene Isimbi “Casco Bay just kept handing me microphones and audiences and I was reluctant, reluctant, reluctant, and then, one time, accepting. And the next, confident. And my blank white slates of days slowly turned into yellow-orange horizons, and I began to forget that I was supposed to be scared and shy and locked up on the inside. Casco Bay, in a very real way, gave me back my vitality.” ~ Josie Pierce “I realized that this place where I stand right now is where I belong.” ~ Henry Burke “From there I came to a school... [w]here the classroom was filled with collaboration and creativity, where art took the place of a textbook, [w[here the teachers are the most passionate people, and their love for their students emanates from their chests and fills the classroom.” ~ Maisie Perkins “I now realize that success is measured not by how many times you win or lose, but by how quickly you can bounce back in the face of adversity.” ~ Caleb Broomfield “Gratitude is not a large enough word.” ~ Kate Pontius “Our class is a wolf pack, one that I cannot wait to run with again.” ~ Gabe Kolbert “Around the time where I was at my worst, I was taken in by an unlikely family, Casco Bay.” ~ Izzy Baker-Pitre “I never felt adequate. Now I do.” ~ Monica Boucher “He told me I would be the first to graduate high school on time, and hey I’ve done more than that, I’m leaving for college now. I DESERVE A HAPPY ENDING.” ~ Jim Bowie “Through the days I spent at Casco I noticed what I had been missing. My voice.” ~ Judy Albdoor “This new me is awesome.” ~ Mohamed Hassan “... Like a lot of things I experienced here at Casco Bay, I didn’t realize its beauty until it was over.” ~ Hafsa Abdalla Thank you Class of 2016 for telling your story – and Casco Bay's – with such eloquence, candor and love. Sincerely

Derek Pierce

All CBHS students have summer reading to complete. Students can find the details about their grade level requirements by clicking on the link on the home page of the CBHS website and scrolling to the bottom of the resulting page: “CBHS Summer Academic Options and Summer Reading.” AP courses have additional work requirements, also detailed at this same spot. Copies of select AP texts are available at school. Call FMI. All juniors and seniors interested in taking a USM, SMCC or PATHS course next fall must make sure they are signed up and have completed all of the necessary paperwork. Contact Ms. Doyle ([email protected]) with any questions about college courses or Mr. Hale ([email protected]) with any PATHS questions. We will be offering the SMCC Introduction to Sociology and College Algebra courses at CBHS (taught by SMCC professors) on Wednesday afternoons. Contact Ms. Doyle if would like to enroll and have not yet done so. Please note that the SMCC and USM fall semester begins August 29th, so enrolled students may have their first college class before CBHS classes start 8/31.

We will be adding a few new courses next fall. Mr. Ford will be teaching a new photography elective. And Ms. Teller and Ms Natarajan will both be teaching a dual USM-CBHS course. Ms Teller will be co-teaching a college chemistry course focused on the chemistry of Mars in the fall, and Ms. Natarajan will be teaching College Calculus in the spring. Students will be receiving their course schedules on the second day of school. They will be in crews for the shortened first day of school. Watch for more details in August. If you have any questions about your schedule, please contact us at school. Each spring, we test all 9th graders in math and reading using a standardized test called the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress). They are often referred to by students and teachers as the NWEA's because that is the organization that creates the test (the Northwest Evaluation Association). At CBHS, we are not huge fans of standardized tests, but we recognize that they are an embedded part of the American educational system that students need to learn to navigate, and they can be useful in providing a more universal measure of achievement. In the case of the NWEA, they can also be useful to demonstrate growth over time. You can view your childs' annual (K-9) NWEA scores in Infinite Campus (under the “assessment” tab). As a school, we also use the NWEA's to provide data about if our students are making expected yearly progress as mathematicians and readers. The NWEA's provide targets for annual growth for each repeat test-taker. Although one test can never adequately assess a year's worth of complex learning, we do see it as an indicator worth following. (See “Cougar Kudos” for grade level data.)

We have been fortunate to have great continuity on our faculty, a key facet of our excellence. However, each year it is necessary to say the difficult goodbye to colleagues who are moving on to new adventures: Jake McNally – to a new career in educational software Laura (LK) Kulaw – to further work in wellness and bullying prevention in Southern Maine Stephane Pejic – to his native France to teach. Thank you Jake, LK and Stephane for your service! In this year's budget process, we were fortunate to add a .5 administrative position, so we could have an administrative complement commensurate to our (full) size and comparable to staffing ratios at Deering and Portland. Consequently, Scott Shibles will be our full-time Director of Student Life next fall. In other shifts, Mr. Morales will be returning from his sabbatical in Nicaragua to teach freshmen Humanities (English) with Mr. Bernstein who will once again be teaching social studies. We are in the process of interviewing for a .5 French position and a .25 Wellness position. And please welcome our new Wellness teacher, Liz Koharian Ms. Koharian is currently a health teacher at Deering, and she has previously taught health at PHS. Ms. Koharian is a graduate of Portland High and USM and the former Deering varsity field hockey coach. She earned an Advanced Certificate from the University of Bradford (UK) in Human Osteology and Paleopathology. Her colleagues and supervisors laud her energy, humor, caring and hunger to improve. Ms. Koharian will be teaching all sections of Wellness and leading a sophomore crew (inheriting Ms. Richard's).

Rising juniors, Class of 2018, the junior team is happy to announce that we have a destination for Junior Journey '17! After much research and thought, we are so excited to say that we will be returning to Detroit! This past year, we traveled to Detroit and it was an extraordinary experience. And, we only barely scraped the surface of all the city has to offer. There are so many more places to see and people to meet. We will be able to draw upon our experiences from last year while also crafting a trip that is unique. Detroit is a fascinating place with a rich history and vibrant culture; it is also an American city that has struggled through the recent recession and is working to reshape itself. We will explore the city, engage in service work, and then interview and document the stories of people living there who none of us has met yet. So, get excited and start brainstorming fundraising ideas! We will see you in September! Any rising junior interested in being the student coordinator for Junior 2017 should write a letter of interest to Mr. Pierce by August 1st. All CBHS families can help make JJ 2017 happen through using Junior Journey Clynk bags for your returnables. You can pick up pre-labelled bags at school - or contact Clynk Tsarina Helen McCain @ [email protected]

Join us for Summer Reading on Thursdays, August 18 and 25, from 9 - 11:30 am. This is an opportunity for students to catch up on their reading and get back into learning mode before school starts. Ms. Randall will lead the group in the Casco Bay HS Library. Reading time will continue in the fall on Mondays after school in the library, part of the afterschool library Homework Club.
