Guided by our vision and grounded in our core values, the YMCA's commitment to serve, learn, lead and renew has ensured our association's relevance to a changing community for over one hundred years. Since 2007, the YMCA has extended services to surrounding communities including Grande Prairie and has provided administration services to the YMCA of Wood Buffalo. Given this reality, our Board of Directors has approved a name that better reflects the geographic area we serve—the YMCA of Northern Alberta. Citadel

A Message to the Community Dear Friends,

The Y in Your Community YMCA Housing Services - 2

YMCA Community Programs - 17 YMCA Child Care Services - 47 YMCA Health & Fitness Centres - 4

Looking back at 2012, it's important to recognize and acknowledge the incredible efforts of our wonderful team of volunteers, staff, donors, members and community partners. Their energy, talent and passion continue to drive this association forward and make it what it is today. Thanks to their leadership, commitment and dedication to our YMCA and our community, we are creating lasting personal and social change in over 87,000 children, teens, young adults and families.

Father Leo Green John Barnett Delwood Baldwin

2012 was a momentous year for our association, one of transition and growth. We welcomed new Staff, Board members, and volunteers. We reinvented ourselves, developing a new image and a new strategic plan that will guide us into the future. The YMCA Welcome Village, our most ambitious, most visionary project yet, completed the $4 million Capital Campaign and opened its doors for the first time. And our CEO, Franco Savoia, after a 43-year YMCA career, retired, leaving behind a decade-long legacy of achievement as the President and CEO of this association. Alongside these changes—historic as some of them may be—we continue to work toward our 106-year-old mission: to create life-enhancing opportunities for the growth and development of all people in spirit, mind, and body.

The title for this year’s annual report is “Communities We Envision.” It is a theme that speaks to the passion we all share for building healthy communities. We are driven, every day, by our mission and by our desire for a better future. Today, the YMCA is recognized as a leader in physical health, child and youth development and community services for Edmonton and Northern Alberta. We are in a position, now more than ever, to address the urgent needs of our communities. And through our past successes, we are ready for the challenges and accomplishments that lie ahead.

PROMOTING Health & Well-Being The YMCA promotes healthy living of all people by ensuring absolutely no one is turned away from the opportunity to achieve a healthier lifestyle. YMCA programs are vital to the sustainable health of our communities. Programs like strength and conditioning, aquatics, organized sports, recreation, dance, yoga and personal training are available to people of all ages, levels and abilities.

2012 Highlights Bridge to Fitness Since its inception at Don Wheaton Family YMCA in March 2012, the Bridge to Fitness program has seen tremendous success. In partnership with the Steadward Centre and the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, the YMCA launched the new program to help participants make the transition from physical rehabilitation to a physical fitness setting. Bridge to Fitness is now hosted in all four YMCA locations, and there are now plans to branch out to include participants from diabetes, cancer, and cardiac rehabilitation programs. Y-Tri Jamie Platz Family YMCA hosted its first triathlon club in 2012 from January to June. A dedicated group of 34 athletes, several coaches, and their fearless leader, Kelly Boisvert, trained three days a week for five months. Every athlete competed and finished in the Westlock Sprint Triathlon, which involved a 750 m swim, a 21 km bike race, and a 5 km run. Jamie Platz Family brought home six medals and 40 very happy tri-participants and coaches. High Voltage In April, the Don Wheaton Family YMCA hosted High Voltage, a 4-hour indoor relay cycling race put on to help raise funds and awareness for the 2012 Strong Kids Campaign. In teams of four, participants enjoyed a great workout and raised over $23,000 dollars for an important cause. Volunteers and Don Wheaton Family YMCA staff were on hand to run the event and ensure that everyone had a fun time. Golf Classic The YMCA hosted yet another successful Strong Kids Golf Classic, thanks in large part to the event’s dedicated volunteers and generous donors. Together, sponsors, suppliers, and 148 golfers raised over $40,000 to benefit the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign and help 400 children participate in day camps and community programs. 4

Over 850 people would have visited our centres.

Don Patterson

YMCA Strong Kids Hero

r us, The YMCA was so important fo . ve ti c a p e ke s u ed lp e h it se u ca be Setting out from Victoria, Don Patterson rode an astonishing 3,500 kilometres in 2011 to raise money for children. When he finally rode into Thunder Bay at the end of his grueling ride, the 58-year-old grandfather was greeted with playful ribbing from the Mississauga YMCA staff. "They were complaining that I only made it half way!" In July 2012, "Halfway Don" would prove his tormentors wrong when he embarked on a coast-to-coast solo ride. Starting from Vancouver and ending in St. John's,

Newfoundland, Don completed the ride in 28 days, pedaling an amazing 250 km each day. All of the money raised went to YMCA Strong Kids, the YMCA's annual campaign. A lifelong member of the YMCA, Don remembers how important the YMCA was in his life and in the lives of his three children growing up. Now this was Don's way of helping kids stay healthy. "We can all play a role in helping our kids become active." Don ended up raising over $25,000 for YMCAs across Canada.

NURTURING Child & Youth Development The YMCA nurtures the potential of children and youth by engaging young people and encouraging positive choices. At the YMCA, support for young people includes licensed child care, before and afterschool programs, recreation, camp, leadership training and counseling. YMCA programs stimulate growing minds while immersing children in a dynamic, caring and culturally diverse environment.

2012 Highlights Youth Transitions Program The YMCA's Youth Transitions Program (YTP) is a free service focused on providing support to youth (aged 13-19) who are facing barriers in their life. These barriers may be related to school, employment, peers, family, housing, addictions or pregnancy. YTP offers a variety of support programs specifically designed to address particular challenges that youth face. In 2012, 104 youth chose to access the program's workshops and one-to-one support, which helps youth cope with various life issues. 86% of youth surveyed said they had increased knowledge of life skills, and 100% surveyed indicated a desire to continue personal commitment towards education and employment goals. Virtual Y Program Virtual Y is a afterschool literacy program delivered through the YMCA within the community of Grande Prairie. The purpose of the program is to create an environment in which children can feel safe, valued and heard. Delivered in an area where there are few resources or services available, Virtual Y has helped children—many of whom have experienced abuse and neglect in their lives—develop emotionally, socially, and academically. The Virtual Y depends on $80,000 in annual community support to fund this program.

Animal Friends: Horse Visit For many of us, the opportunity to get up close with a real horse is a rare event in our urbanized environment. In July, over 80 kids enjoyed a magical experience when Trifon and his owner swung by the YMCAs for a visit. Besides getting to pet and talk to Trifon, the kids also got the chance to colour and make horse masks during arts and crafts. In partnership with the YMCA, the Arabian Horse Reading Literacy Project arranged the visits in an effort to spread awareness of the Arabian horse to an audience unfamiliar with the breed, the group of children learned about grooming, feeding, and a horse's anatomy.

Erykah, Keenin & Caly Summer Day Camp

Lifetime memory, impossible to forget. In late June, Jennifer and her three children came to Castle Downs Family YMCA to meet with Centre Manager Karen Davis. A low-income single mom working to support her family, Jennifer was having an impossible time arranging something for her kids to do over the summer. But thanks to an anonymous donor and the funds raised through the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, the family received YMCA memberships for the entire summer. As summer drew to a close, Karen had the opportunity to speak with the children about their YMCA experience. All three had a blast over the summer break, meeting new

friends and improving their swimming skills. Oldest daughter Erykah, inspired by her summer camp experience, can’t wait to join Leaders in Training as soon as she is old enough, and she looks forward to becoming a YMCA camp counselor and giving back to the community. When asked about their favourite part of summer, all three kids gave different answers. But whether it was the swimming, the field trips, or the many new friends made over the summer, the message was clear: The summer spent at the YMCA was a once-in-a-lifetime memory, impossible to forget.

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY YMCA Welcome Village Located in the Boyle Street area of downtown Edmonton, the YMCA Welcome Village is a visionary partnership between the City of Edmonton, the Province of Alberta, Capital Region Housing Corporation and the YMCA. It consists of the Melcor YMCA Village, a 150 unit affordable housing building; the Shirley Stollery YMCA Child Care Centre, a home-like environment for children 12 months to six years; and the YMCA Family Resource Centre, a community support facility available to any individual, couple, or family.

2012 Highlights Melcor Village Naming

In April, Melcor Developments, a real estate company with deep roots in Edmonton, donated $1.5 million toward the YMCA Welcome Village project. The generous gift, spearheaded by Melcor’s executive chairman Tim Melton and CEO Ralph Young, helped the YMCA close a successful $4-million capital campaign. The YMCA Welcome Village’s housing centre was named the Melcor YMCA Village in honour of Melcor’s contribution.

Opening of the Stollery YMCA Child Care Centre

In August, the Shirley Stollery YMCA Child Care Centre opened its doors. Located in the heart of downtown, the centre is a state-of-the-art facility named in honour of Shirley Stollery, passionate philanthropist and joint founder of the Stollery Charitable Foundation. The centre is a home-like child care centre for children twelve months to six years, providing a safe and nurturing environment for children to grow and develop cognitive, physical, emotional, and social skills. The centre features a connected outdoor play space as well as access to a child-friendly kitchen and a muck and guck room where children can fully explore their creativity. Open House of the Boyle Street Plaza

The holiday spirit came alive this last Christmas as Boyle Street Community members and YMCA staff, friends and supporters arrived at the opening of the Boyle Street Plaza. While a choir sang carols, visitors got to tour the centre and visit the YMCA Family Resource Centre, a community resource full of life-enriching services available to any individual, couple, or family. Bringing families closer together, it offers numerous volunteer opportunities, leisure programs, social supports, parenting programs, community kitchen, and more. 8

Tim Melton

Fellowship of Honor

g in t u ib r t n o c f o s e lu a Reflects our v community. back to the Never ask someone to do something that you wouldn’t do yourself. It’s a cardinal rule of leadership, and it applies even more to philanthropy. Tim Melton understands this truth and has led—and inspired—others by example throughout his more than four decades of involvement with the YMCA. As Executive Chair of Melcor Developments Ltd., Tim leads a highly diversified, well-respected publicly traded business that has evolved from a real estate company started by his grandfather in 1923. Continuing a legacy of philanthropy established by his parents and grandparents, he also oversees his family’s charitable foundation, which supports many community organizations, including the YMCA.

Tim has been a member of the YMCA’s Board of Directors and a board member of the YMCA of Edmonton Foundation, a position he holds to this day. In 2010, Tim became part of the capital campaign to build the YMCA Welcome Village, providing the lead gift through his company. This past January, Tim was appointed an Officer of the YMCA Fellowship of Honour in recognition of his outstanding service and generosity. Most early mornings you’ll find Tim in the pool at Don Wheaton Family YMCA. As in other areas of his life, he’s leading by example, and more than 40 years later, the YMCA is still where he really wants to be.

INSPIRING Community Leadership Our communities face urgent challenges requiring immediate action. As a community leader, the YMCA is in a position to build healthy communities and enrich the lives of children, youth, and families. Whether it’s supporting individuals with their health and wellbeing, encouraging child and youth development, or providing opportunity for all, the YMCA has become an influential agent of positive change.

2012 Highlights Strategic Plan

Over the past year, YMCA staff and Board members have worked hard to renew the YMCA’s strategic plan, one that addresses the needs of our changing community. Their hard work and effort paid off, and a new strategic plan for 2013– 2016 was created. The plan identifies the many challenges now facing our communities by focusing on four strategic directions. It’s a bold and innovative approach that will help foster a YMCA better and stronger than ever. New Scholarship

To honour the contributions of Franco and his wife, Barbara Savoia, a fund has been established in their names to help fulfill the dreams of young people and aid them in reaching their full potential. Franco believes that it is our responsibility to be purposeful in our actions to assist others in reaching their personal best, and thus "Star-Building." The Franco and Barbara Savoia Star-Builder Scholarship Award is an annual scholarship for young people in the Melcor YMCA Village who plan to pursue post-secondary education. Branding

With 2012 came a new facelift for Canadian YMCAs. New branding was introduced to give the YMCA a more youthful, more engaging image. Through this re-branding, Canadian YMCAs look forward to providing more focused programs and services that will be consistent across the country. Communication staff worked tirelessly over the last year to change communication materials to meet the new standards. The result? A colourful, friendly, and vibrant new look for the YMCA of Northern Alberta.

Franco Savoia

Former President & CEO

. s s e n s s le e m o h g in Passionate about end On November 14, 2012, family members, friends, and community leaders gathered to celebrate the many achievements of Franco Savoia, who would be retiring as the President and CEO after a long and distinguished career. Under Franco’s leadership, the YMCA has undergone many remarkable changes: membership increased from 17,000 to 25,000; the number of YMCA Child Care Centres jumped from 13 in 2000 to over 40; the Don Wheaton Family YMCA opened

in 2007; and in 2012, the $36.5 million YMCA Welcome Village was completed. Passionate about philanthropy and the health and well-being of others, Franco has always had a close affinity with his local community, beginning his YMCA career as a community worker in Toronto’s Little Italy. Helping to make the YMCA what it is today, Franco leaves an enduring legacy that will benefit our Edmonton community for years to come.

STRENGTHENING International Partnerships YMCAs in Canada build strong, supportive bridges across cultural and national boundaries through immigrant settlement services, global education programs, and collaborations with YMCAs in other countries.

In 2012

In its mission to provide opportunity for all, the YMCA of Northern Alberta participates in global initiatives that foster well-being, cooperation, and world peace. Currently, the YMCA is partnered with YMCAs in Mexico, Ukraine, and Bogota, Colombia.

children and youth in Bogota, Colombia were connected to the education system by the YMCA.

2012 Highlights Peace Awards Promoting peace provides an environment where individuals and communities can experience growth and strengthen communal bonds. Since 1987, YMCAs across Canada have honoured individuals or groups in their communities who, without any special resources, demonstrate in their lives and activities the values of peace and understanding. By recognizing individuals who promote peace in their communities, the YMCA hopes to raise awareness of the impact that peaceful initiatives can have. Viktor's Visit

One of the YMCA’s major partnerships is with YMCA Ukraine. Viktor Serbulov, the General Secretary of YMCA Ukraine, came to visit the YMCA last May prior to attending our NAYDO (North American YMCA Development Organization) Conference on YMCA Philanthropy. With plans to develop an international youth centre, Viktor came to tour the YMCA centres and learn from YMCA staff about program and service delivery. World Hoop Challenge

In October, the YMCA participated in the YMCA World Challenge: 2012 Hoop Springs Eternal. The international event challenged YMCAS all over the world to set a new record for the most number of people shooting basketballs in one day. The goal of the event was to unite the worldwide YMCA community in celebration of everything YMCA. All four Health and Wellness centres had a spectacular turnout with over 1,500 people participating overall.

Katie Hicks

Youth Conference Participant

A Senior Director of Child Care for the YMCA, Katie Hicks had the opportunity to participate in the YMCA Europe Catch the Vision Youth Conference that was hosted in Istanbul, Turkey. The conference was the first of YMCA Europe’s Roots for Reconciliation initiative, which strives to increase international peace building through youth relationships. The motto of the conference, “Where West Meets East,” underlined the importance of peace building between different cultures. Listening to guest speakers who came from around the world, Katie learned about cultural sensitivity and youth empowerment, and forged enduring relationships with international peers.

t s e W e r e h W t s a E s t e e M Thanks to the conference, Katie now has a new outlook on interacting with others: “Through experiencing the culture and conference, I recognized that although there are differences among us, we are all committed to our work in our local communities through the YMCA.” Now, back in Edmonton, Katie is looking forward to linking up with friends made during the conference. With their support, she plans to establish pen pal relationships between children from the YMCAs of Edmonton and children from the YMCAs in England and Kosovo. 13
