In the last few years, many new options have become available to restore the youthful appearance of the face. Restylane has replaced collagen to fill fine lines as well as enhance lips and laugh lines. Silicone is used to elevate small, depressed scars. The latest breakthrough in newly FDA-approved injectable fillers is Sculptra. It is the first treatment of its kind approved for a condition known as lipoatrophy, or facial wasting which can affect HIV patients. In this condition, there is a loss of fat tissue under the skin, which gives a hollow appearance to the cheek, eye, and temple areas. Clinical studies have demonstrated that Sculptra produces a significant increase in skin thickness, adding volume to facial tissue and restoring shape to areas of fat loss. FDA approval of Sculptra was based on a review of clinical safety studies, which showed Sculptra to be safe and effective. Prior to its approval in the United States, Sculptra had been used safely for five years in Europe under the trade name New-Fill. The Titan has also been used successfully to treat loose skin of the abdomen and upper arms and may also have applications for other body areas such as the breasts, and the skin above the knees. Until the arrival of Sculptra, the main treatment option was fat transfer, a surgical procedure in which fat is taken from one body area and implanted in another area. JUVA Study Reveals Exciting New Information About Kinerase

Kinerase is a natural, plant-derived growth factor used to minimize the signs of photodamage, including fine wrinkling, pigmentation, and skin roughness.

In a recent study conducted at the Juva Skin & Laser Center, 15 patients applied Kinerase cream on their face twice daily for 12 weeks. Study patients were evaluated prior to treatment and at six and twelve weeks after treatment with the Visia Complexion Analysis System, digital photographs, ultrasound scanning as well as physician clinical assessment. The study revealed exciting new information about Kinerase cream. It was found that Kinerase cream markedly diminished ultraviolet light spots, a direct result of sun damage which can lead to skin cancer. Therefore, a reduction in these spots may decrease the potential to develop skin cancer. Our study also demonstrated that porphyrins, a chemical produced by bacteria that cause acne, were markedly reduced. This is important as Kinerase cream may have a role in preventing the development of acne. Finally, preliminary findings from ultrasound analysis showed an increase in low density collagen in the dermis in a significant number of patients. This may indicate that Kinerase stimulates new collagen production. The majority of study subjects reported a moderate to marked improvement in skin texture. The Ultrasonic Facial

In a recent scientific study performed at Juva, it was found that by using ultrasound probes, a variety of different types of facials were more cosmetically effective compared to facials performed in the traditional fashion. A Better Breast Lift/Reduction Each year many women undergo breast surgery to correct functional and aesthetic breast problems. These problems vary from the teenager who may be struggling with her identity as a young women and adjustment to her body image to the mature woman who complains of large sagging breasts causing pain as well as a variety of medical problems and social issues. Other women complain of having lost a youthful breast shape with flattening of the upper breast and breast drooping or ptosis. To alleviate both the functional and aesthetic complaints associated with overly large breasts many women choose to undergo breast reduction surgery, known as reduction mammoplasty. To improve the appearance of drooping breasts women may choose to have a breast lift, a mastopexy. In either instance they want to feel better physically and psychosocially. Until recently, both breast reduction and breast lift procedures resulted in extensive scarring. The most common type of breast reduction performed, the inferior pedicle technique, is a safe, reliable, proven technique, which has been the gold standard of breast reduction surgery for many years. However, the scarring is extensive. The scar circles the areola, extends downward and follows the curve or fold beneath the breast. The longest scar and the one that tends to heal least favorably is the scar in the breast fold. In addition, over time, some of the remaining breast tissue settles toward the bottom of the breast giving the breast a somewhat flattened appearance. Breast lifts may have some of the same problems. In both techniques the modification of the breast skin has been the determining factor of breast shape. There is now a technique, the vertical scar technique, which has significant advantages over the more traditional methods 5

through a two-step process. First, Tui-na (pronounced tweenah) is used which is a therapeutic and stimulating manual manipulation. Second, acupuncture needles, which are thinner than a human hair, are inserted both locally on the face and on various other points of the body.

Although it's been practiced for more than 5000 years, acupuncture is only now being tested by Western medicine. of breast reduction and breast lift. This technique is based on reshaping the breast tissue itself rather than relying on the skin to shape the breast. The vertical scar technique results in breasts that are more shapely with better projection. The desirable breast tissue in the upper pole of the breast remains and the undesirable breast tissue in the bottom part of the breast is removed. The amount of scarring is significantly reduced. The horizontal scar underneath the breast is either completely eliminated or is replaced by a very short well-hidden horizontal scar. This technique however does have limitations; it cannot be used to reduce exceedingly large breasts.
