What are essential oils?

If you’ve ever smelled a rose, peeled an orange or had mint leaves in a drink, you’ve experienced essential oils. They are the aromatic components of plants.

Since plants need to communicate with their neighbors to survive and thrive, they need to keep pests and predators away, fight off diseases and also attract the right pollinators and heal themselves from injury. These volatile aromatic components are key in serving these functions and have developed over the course of that plants’ evolution. It’s also why they are referred to as “essential oils”. Essential oils are expressed, distilled and extracted from flowers, seeds, roots, leaves, fruit rinds and other plant material into these fragrant natural oils. These oils have been used for centuries in cooking, body and health care. Essential oils are said to contain the vital “life-force” of the plants.

The heart of rareEarth and rareEssence...

Scent is at the heart of our business. In 1977, Sherri Jobelius, co-founder of rareEARTH, managed one of the first natural food stores, Tao Natural Foods, where she worked for over 12 years. One of her duties was overseeing the “herb loft” where she discovered the incredible variety of herbs available for medicinal teas and tinctures. As she explored this realm, she was drawn to the essential oils that were a part of this herbal world. She began to learn how these oils could be used for a variety of things: lavender oil to soothe a minor burn, rosemary oil to give luster to hair and eucalyptus to clear a stuffy nose. She also noticed how wonderful these essential oils smelled and she began using them instead of perfumes from department stores. They were softer than synthetic scents and not over-powering when worn. Sherri combined these oils to create her own perfume essences dreaming that one day she would create products using these beautiful oils.

In 1996, Sherri and Brian Paulsen met, fell in love and soon began to collaborate on essential oil products. They shared a love of people, the natural world, healthy food, environmental sustainability and a commitment to create an enterprise that would encompass these elements. Through the years, they also studied and gathered information about the concerning ingredients in synthetically scented products. They discovered that most of these ‘synthetic fragrances’ contained petroleum derived chemicals like phthalates, shown to have negative effects on the respiratory system, the nervous system and a serious detrimental effect on growth and hormones in children. Together they resolved that they would make it their mission to create only pure, healthy products utilizing pure essential oils - free from harmful synthetic chemicals. From these humble beginnings, rareEARTH was inspired. Today, Sherri still guides this mission along side Brian who shares in her passion for the beauty and alchemy of nature. In recent years, the company’s focus has been on expanding and further developing the rareESSENCE Aromatherapy branded line of products. A premium luxury brand, Eufori, has also been introduced, featuring only essential oil based, sophisticated synergistic scents. 4

These oils also contain components that have been found to be beneficial and pleasing to humans. Where once ‘Aromatherapy’ was considered to be ‘fringe’, it has now become a part of complementary therapy and has been incorporated into mainstream uses by healthcare practitioners in clinics and hospitals.

rareESSENCE essential oils are subject to stringent, advanced-scientific testing by our Essential Oil Chemist to verify their superior quality, potency and purity. They are also “smell tested” by our Certified Aromatherapists to provide the ultimate aromatic experience. This testing and evaluation includes; GC - MS (Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry) Analysis. GC - Gas Chromatography analysis measures the individual chemical constituents in an essential oil sample to confirm that they are representative of what that particular essential oil should actually contain. MS or Mass Spectrometry follows GC testing and analyzes all the chemical constituents to determine whether any adulterants including synthetic components, diluents, pesticides and heavy metals are present. If the sample fails any part of the test, the oil is rejected. After the sample passes GC-MS Analysis, the final test is the “Smell Test” conducted by our Certified Aromatherapists. Through years of experience, our experts can determine if the oil meets our uncompromising standards. Only the finest oils become rareESSENCE Essential Oils and make it into our products.

OUR STORY

Scientific testing is critical to ensuring quality and potency, but it is the relationships developed over twenty years with growers and distillers that eliminates intermediary handling of the oils, where adulteration could occur. We are proud to support these amazing, dedicated farmers, harvesters and distillers all over the world. This is also reflected in that each of our oils tells you the “Country of Origin” and botanical species of the plant from which the oil was made. If an essential oil does not provide that information, you may be getting an oil that is adulterated or blended from many oils or not even from the actual plant you thought. rareESSENCE is committed to providing essential oils that are pure and potent.
