GAME VIEWING AT XUGANA ISLAND LODGE Xugana means "kneel down to drink" in the local dialect. Xugana Lagoon has, for thousands of years, been a safe haven for the Bushman people who lived in this pristine water world. Xugana Lagoon is in the permanent Delta, a world of crystal clear waterways winding through vast reed and papyrus beds, opening unexpectedly onto tranquil lagoons, home to bream, catfish, and the fighting tiger-fish and fringed by secret wooded islands, a haven for the magnificent bird and wildlife that inhabit the Delta.

Activities at Xugana Island Lodge are water based! Staying at Xugana lets you enjoy all the activities that the Okavango Delta does best. Mokoro trips in eco-friendly dugout canoes built to the traditional design, boat safaris to lagoons and islands, and wilderness walks each give guests the chance to see the Delta denizens such as the sitatunga and red lechwe antelopes, crocodile, and hippo, as well as the other big game that frequents the islands and riverine fringes. These can be combined with leisurely walks on surrounding islands in the concession.

Bird-watching opportunities are outstanding, and the bream (tilapia) and tiger-fish fishing can be excellent at certain times of the year. The peaceful motorboat ride back across Xugana Lagoon during the spectacular African sunset provides a lifelong memory. All activities are conducted by experienced naturalist guides, who, as well as ensuring that guests come to no harm, are keen to impart their vast knowledge and love of this unique area.

At the end of the day admire the sunset from the viewing deck & watch Wild Dogs hunt in the channel where crocodiles once swam. The game viewing offered by Savute is an experience not to be missed

GAME VIEWING AT SAVUTE SAFARI LODGE Stretching from the waterways of the Linyanti all the way to Savute Marsh, the winding waterways of Savute Channel have pumped life into the western section of Chobe National Park for many thousands of generations. But this fickle and unpredictable channel has a fascinating history of flooding and drying up independently of good rainy seasons and flood levels elsewhere - a mystery that has intrigued geologists and other researchers for many years. When David Livingstone discovered the Savute Channel in 1851 it was flowing. Thirty years later the channel had disappeared and the Savute Marsh had dried out, remaining this way for almost 80 years. It flowed again in the late 1950s, continuing until the early 1980s when it again receded, gaining the channel its reputation as ‘the river which flows in both directions’. In 2009, after another extended hiatus, the channel began flowing again and by January 2010 had spilled into the Savute Marsh for the first time in three decades. No-one knows how long the water will remain…

The Savuti area is world renowned for offering incredible game viewing. During the dry season, guests can expect to see Savuti's famous resident bull Elephants, antelope and resident lion prides, as well as black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, tsessebe, kudu, impala, giraffe and ostrich. During the summer months thousands of zebra and antelope species migrate to the area offering a feast for lion, hyena and cheetah. Buffalo herds arrive and migrant birds increase Savuti's resident population of over 300 species. Activities are centered around game drives throughout the Savute area in open 4x4 safari vehicles lead by professional and experienced guides. Many trips will incorporate a visit to the Savute Marsh for your chance to see the historic presence of the Savute Channel at the marsh against a teeming backdrop of wildlife. Guests will also enjoy a visit to the

ancient San rock paintings at Gubatsa Hills – a small hilly outcrop which forms a remarkable landmark in the otherwise flat landscape. Savute lays claim to the second biggest summer zebra migration in Africa, which is determined by the rains but usually occurs between November and December and again between February and April when the zebras move from the rivers in the north in search of the rain-ripe grasslands and full waterholes in the southeast of the park. Often followed by a myriad of predators, the zebra migration is a must for visitors.

Each luxurious chalet comprises beds with down duvets, en-suite bathrooms and private viewing decks allowing spectacular views. The main lodge houses a dining room, reading room and bar in the main lodge, expansive wooden decks and a plunge pool, guests can immerse themselves seamlessly into the ultimate wildlife experience in Botswana. The lodge offers both scheduled guided day and night game drives. Depending on water levels of the Boteti River, boat activities are also on offer. Optional cultural excursions can also be arranged to visit Khumaga Village. Guided nature walks in the area surrounding the lodge can also be arranged. (Please Note: Due to their location in the park, the physical Makgadikgadi Pans are not visited on daily scheduled activities from Leroo La Tau).

GAME VIEWING AT LEROO LA TAU The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park stretches away from the banks of the Boteti River, through its interior of scrubland and grasslands. The western boundary provides for mineral rich grass lands and the Boteti River which supplies the much needed sustenance for the herds which inhabit the park. Leroo La Tau is situated on the western bank of the Boteti River, north west of Khumaga village, about 140 kilometers south east of Maun. The river's eastern bank forms the boundary of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. The Boteti River is the main outflow of the Okavango Delta, collecting the water that flows past Maun, and stretches about 250 km southeast finally ending at Lake Xau on the extreme south western edge of the great Makgadikgadi salt pans. There was permanent water in the river since long before Livingstone first explored the area in the late 1840s and brought the existence of Lake Ngami to the attention of the outside world. The river provided water for the great herds of wildlife that seasonally utilized the short grass plains on the north-west side of the Makgadikgadi, and latterly provided water for the Setswana cattle herders who moved onto the western bank. The river was thus a natural barrier between the wildlife and the cattle – and was a natural boundary for the National park.

In the mid 1980s the flood waters of the Okavango started to decline as the region entered a cycle of low rainfall in the catchment – and the Boteti River, receiving far less water, began to dry back progressively. It finally started drying up completely in the mid 1990s. The water stopped reaching Leroo La Tau by about 1987/88 – leaving a few waterholes in the riverbed fed by underground seeps, and trapping a small pod of hippo who stayed in a deep pool near Leroo La Tau, together with crocodiles who became completely terrestrial and denned in caves in the eastern river bank opposite Leroo La Tau. The zebra and wildebeest herds continued to use the rich grass plains and migrating to the river at the end of winter to access the water in the seeps. The Makgadikgadi National Park is a harsh dry environment, suited to Gemsbok and Kudu, but the river provided a life-giving source of water for the zebra and wildebeest utilising the eastern grass plains.

2009 saw the highest floods in the Okavango in the past 25 years, and the Boteti River has started flowing strongly again with the water reaching and flowing past Leroo La Tau. After the start of the rainy season, this desert area teems with wildlife as herds of zebra and wildebeest graze to their heart's content on the wide open green grassland plains of the Makgadikgadi. During the wet season there is an influx of migratory bird species, while resident desert species welcome their visitors by showing off their breeding plumage. The area around the lodge also boasts Chobe Bushbuck, Leopard, Brown and Spotted Hyena, Impala, Kudu, Jackal, Porcupines, Genets, Caracal and White Rhino to name but a few. Most unique however, are the Crocodile and an amazing pod of Hippo which have survived in extremely adverse conditions for over 12 years. Making this area of the Boteti a unique haven for large herds and predators alike. Leroo La Tau offers both scheduled guided day and night game drives. Depending on water levels of the Boteti River, boat activities are also on offer. These activities usually take about 2 hours per activity and although guests do see large game, activities emphasise on experiencing the beauty of the Kalahari and sharing the wonders, which together constitute this very delicate African ecosystem. Guided nature walks in the area surrounding the lodge can also be arranged. Optional cultural excursions can also be arranged to the neighbouring village, Khumaga. Also on offer are day trips out to Baines Baobabs and Nxai Pan and for those looking for some extra insight into this unique area and its history there are cultural and topographical talks on offer. Please note: Due to their location in the park, the physical Makgadikgadi Pans are not visited on daily scheduled activities from Leroo La Tau
