Welcome to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall
On behalf of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, I would like to welcome all participants, coaches, fans, members of the media and corporate sponsors back to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall for the 2016 New Jersey Individual Wrestling Championships. Our New Jersey Wrestling Championships are arguably the best showcase of wrestling in the country. New Jersey is one of three states that have a single Champion. Not only have we produced individuals such as Olympic Champions Jordan Burroughs, Bruce Baumgartner, and Chris Campbell but also many NCAA Champions and placewinners. Our model has been promoted by the NWCA as the golden standard to promote wrestling across the country. Again this year is no different than in the past. Another outstanding field of wrestlers will be taking the mats to strive for their ultimate goal as a State Champion. The success of these wrestlers is only possible by the efforts of many, especially the parents and coaches of each of the wrestlers. The showcase for these outstanding athletes helps to complete the wrestling season in grand fashion. This is only possible through the help of many, my assistant, Jack Kinner, Steve Timko and his staff at the NJSIAA, especially Jewel Sellers, and the tournament staff at the tables and around the arena as well as the many coaches and officials who help behind the scenes. I would like to say a special thank you to the Convention Center staff and the Security Staff for their cooperation and assistance. Most importantly, a thank you to all the great fans that support the wrestlers and the State Championships. You are the Greatest. The NJSIAA Wrestling Committee and the NJ Wrestling Coaches Association continue to try to improve the sport of wrestling. As a result of the partnership with the NWCA and Track Wrestling, this year we are using a live scoring system. This will be improved as the years go by and eventually it will be universal. The Coaches Association recommended creating 5 groups and this year, the second year for 5 groups, was again a success. The State Team Group Championships returned to the coaches’ favorite location, the Pine Belt Arena at Toms River North. The Pine Belt creates a close and exciting environment for the fans and wrestlers of New Jersey. A focus of the Wrestling committee is to improve the appearance of the dress code at our tournaments and dual meets. Hopefully coaches will take responsibility to present a classy appearance for themselves and their wrestlers when representing their schools at all wrestling events. The Wrestling Committee continues to work with the Coaches Association to look for ways to improve not only the tournaments but wrestling in general. It welcomes for consideration and evaluation, suggestions from all coaches and fans. Each year the tournament has had outstanding vocalists singing the National Anthem such as the Southern Regional Select Choir, Lindsey Petrosh - Miss New Jersey, the Rock & Roll Chorus and many other outstanding singers. This year is no different with outstanding vocalists Gianna Caruso , Mara Justine, Kiley Rotello, Diedre Thompson and Regan White performing this year’s National Anthem beginning each session. Also at the finals, we again welcome the New Jersey State Police Honor Guard. It is our honor to have them and our outstanding vocalists contribute to the success of our tournament. Thank you. I also would like to express our thanks to Mike Moyer of the National Wrestling Coaches Association for his continuous support in our efforts to make wrestling in the State of New Jersey, the best in the country. It has only been with his and the NWCA’s cooperation and support that we have continued to upgrade and automate our scoring methods, record keeping and improve our seeding procedures. Lastly, I want to congratulate all wrestlers and coaches who are participating in the NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships this year. You are fortunate to be able to compete in one of the premier state championships in America. Good luck and best wishes for a fantastic 2016 NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships. “

2016 Harry E. Lake Award Contributions to New Jersey Wrestling Warren Reid Warren Reid’s everlasting journey and contribution to the great sport of wrestling began at Bridgewater Raritan West High School, winning a District Wrestling title and was a Region 5 runner-up his senior year. Upon graduation from Bridgewater Raritan West in 1963, Reid joined the United States Marine Corp serving his country proudly, while going undefeated in competition during his last two years of military service. Upon receiving his honorable discharge, Reid spent two years at Phoenix Junior College, Arizona earning his Associate Degree, serving as Team Captain for two years and garnering All-American status in 1971 with a 4th Place at 167 lbs in the Junior College Nationals. After graduating from Phoenix Junior College, Reid enrolled at the University of Oklahoma where he once again earned All-American honors; this time by placing 5th in 1972 and a 4th place finish at 177lbs in 1973 while serving as Team Captain both years. Upon conclusion of his second year at the University of Oklahoma, Reid was recruited to become an Assistant Wrestling Coach at the University of Alabama. Reid graduated from the University of Alabama in 1976 with a degree in Physical Education and Health. Upon graduation from Alabama, Reid returned to his native New Jersey and was hired as a substitute teacher at the Arthur Brisbane Child Treatment Center located in Farmingdale, NJ. During his search of a
full-time teaching position, Reid was hired as an Assistant Coach under former Toms River High School South Head Coach, John DeMarco. Shortly after in 1979, Reid was hired as a full-time Physical Education and Health Teacher at Toms River High School East when it first opened its doors; a place he refers to as his second home, while his wife refers to it as his first home. At Toms River East, he has spent the last 37 years as the Head Wrestling Coach while assisting in football and gymnastics. During the last 37 years, Reid has guided the Wrestling Raiders to a 385-297-7 dual meet record that spans through the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s. Reid has coached 11 “100 “ match winners, 74 District 24 Champions, 32 Region 6 Winners, 15 Super Region Champions, 29 State Place winners and 6 State Champions. His teams have won 8 District 24 Championships and Three Shore Conference Championships. As a result, Reid was voted “NJSIAA Coach of the Year” in 1985 and District 24 and Region 6 “Coach of the Year” in 1994. In the off season months, Reid coached the New Jersey Junior National Greco and Freestyle Teams for 28 years, serving as the Head Coach for three years. Many in the wrestling community will remember Reid’s competitive rivalries that developed over three decades; those included Brick Memorial High School led by former Head Coach, Tony Caravella and Assistant Coach, Denny D’Andrea. Southern Regional High School led by former Head Coach, Jerry Tabbachino and current Head Coach, John Stout. Jackson Memorial High School led by former Head Coach and current Rutgers University Head Coach, Scott Goodale. His involvement in the great sport of wrestling resulted in Reid being inducted into the Region 5 and 6 Hall of Fame, Jersey Shore Sport Hall of Fame, Toms River Regional Schools Hall of Fame, New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, National Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame and recipient of the John J. Hallisey Memorial Award. Although many outside observers in the wrestling community will remember Reid near the mat, whistling, screaming, red faced, animated and adorned with a white towel around his neck. However, those who put on a Raider Singlet or those lucky enough to call him “friend” know that Coach Reid is more than wrestling; he is the “salt of the earth” and often described as dedicated, competitive, and a task master in the wrestling community. While wins, losses, and titles often define a coach, Reid finds great satisfaction in knowing that no matter if you won a state title or never won a match, the lessons learned continue to influence so many lives. For those who are close to him know a side of him not seen by most; a loyal friend, a man of unwavering integrity, calm by nature, gentle and reserved. Coach Reid is “wrestling” but also a loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather. Coach Reid is the current Head Coach of Toms River High School East. Currently residing in Toms River, he and Maureen, his wife of 22 years, raised two children; Steve (43), a Lakewood Township IT Network Administrator; Brett (37), a Barnegat Township Police Officer. Blessed by their two Daughter in-laws, Tracey and Nicole who have given him much joy with his four Grandchildren; Coleton, Carson, Logan, and Kendall.

The First Annual Award has been presented to VINCENT RUSSO ~ March 9, 2014 Vincent “Vinnie” Russo has been officiating wrestling in the State of New Jersey for the past 30 plus years. He has officiated on all levels of the sport including National, as well as The State Finals. In 1999 Vinnie was named the NJSIAA/NFHS Official of the Year. Vinnie has been ranked number 1 by the State Coaches Association for the past 15 years. Along with his excellence in officiating Vinnie has served as Treasure of the New Jersey Wrestling Officials Association for the past 9 years. Along with his State involvement Vinnie has been invited to be a member of the Wrestlers in Business Network, and is currently a member of The NJ NHSF Rules Committee. When Vinnie was named “Chief Referee” for the State of New Jersey 4 years ago, and with that title comes with the task of being the Wrestling Assignor for the Sectional, District, Regional, and State Wrestling Tournaments. One of Vinnie’s greatest achievements is being the Founder of the Referee Evaluation Process. Each NJSIAA Wrestling Referee has been assigned a number which is located on the back of their Official’s Shirt. The New Jersey Wrestling Officials Association is the only Officials group that has this number system in the State. With this process he also formed a group of over 40 Evaluators throughout the State of NJ. This is the Major Reason why New Jersey Officials are considered the Best in the Country. Vinnie along with this long list of accolades also assigns the officials for 70 different New Jersey Schools. With the evaluation process fully in place it gives Vinnie a large picture on where we need to work to improve as an organization. Vinnie has done an enormous amount of work to help our officials become the best. Vinnie is married to his lovely Wife Lorraine and has 3 daughters, Kandice, Mia and Shea. What a fitting honor to Vinnie then to have this award named for him.

John Vogeding Memorial Award Harry Frezza
To Harry Frezza, the catchphrase 'it's all about the kids' wasn't just a cliché, but the touchstone of how he did the job from the time he arrived at the Courier News of Bridgewater on February 14, 1980 to the day he retired last October 30. His passion and care for the youngsters he covered never wavered. Harry worked the scholastic sports beat for most of his career, covering wrestling, football and baseball. Wrestling became his favorite because of the unrivaled passion of the sports' athletes, coaches and its spirited and knowledgeable fans. Between 1983 and 1986, Harry covered municipal government, crime and health news. He was also frequently called on to cover the Superior Court of Somerset and Union counties He was responsible for a wide range of stories that included the prosecutor's offices in both counties, St. Patrick's Day parade and New Year's Eve celebration in New York City to several major storms that affected the Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex and Union county areas. Harry returned to sports as a full time reporter in the fall of 1986 and then served as Courier News sports editor from 1992-1994. Harry filled in occasionally on profession beats, getting the chance to cover the Yankees, Mets, Giants and Devils. Two of his biggest thrills were getting to cover the Devils' first playoff run in the spring of 1988 and getting the chance to cover the Italian National men's soccer team for USA TODAY during the World Cup in the U.S. in 1994.But high school sports is where his heart and obligation was centered, covering the NJSIAA Wrestling Tournament in Atlantic City every year was certainly among the top of many highlights. Harry is a proud graduate of Bound Brook High School and Rowan University in Glassboro. He was an outstanding runner in high school and college, winning the New Jersey State College cross country title in 1977 at Rowan. He was also named team MVP that season. Harry is the father of three children - Thomas, 25, Nicole, 24 and Jamie Janeen, 22.

2015 State Finals Articles Hanover Park’s Gerard Angelo defeats Delbarton’s Patrick Glory to win 106-pound state wrestling championship By James Kratch | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com If you wrestle for Hanover Park, you become quite acquainted with fellow Morris County program Delbarton. “Delbarton, they’re top competition,” freshman 106-pounder Gerard Angelo said. “They’re in our county, in our district, in our region. And they go to all of the tough tournaments, like Beast (of the East) that we do. We see them everywhere. You’re guaranteed to see a tough guy from Delbarton everywhere you go.” For Angelo, that guy was Patrick Glory. And Glory undoubtedly had Angelo’s number coming in to Sunday’s 106-pound state final at the NJSIAA/Rothman Institute Championships. T he two standouts had met five prior times this season, splitting a pair of meetings at Beast – Glory won in the championship bracket, Angelo returned the favor in the consolation final – before Glory won three straight in the quarterfinals of the Morris County Tournament and the District 9 and Region 3 finals. But on center stage at Boardwalk Hall on the final day of the season, the six minutes in front of you is all that matters. And those moments belonged to Angelo, who took down Glory to open the bout and then again in the third en route to a 4-3 triumph and a state title. “Coming in, I was 1-4 with Pat, and that disappointed me,” Angelo said. “But I realized that I could still get him back. They (the other losses) don’t really matter. This is what matters. … This is where it counts.” Angelo (41-5) and Glory (40-4) stood tied at two after two periods. Angelo then got the decisive takedown with under a minute to go. Glory escaped to pull within a point and had a strong shot in late, but Angelo fought it off and held on. “I just came in confident, doing what I do best. I wrestled my match, and I won,” Angelo said. “It hasn’t hit me yet. My body is just kind of numb. It’s pretty exciting.”
Steinert's Brandon Cray defensive-minded in state wrestling finals victory over Brick Memorial's Gianni Ghione at 113 pounds By Joe Zedalis | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Brandon Cray, whose relentless, attacking, high-powered style made him a state championship contender, won the NJSIAA/Rothman Institute 113-pound title with defense Saturday at Boardwalk Hall. Cray, a Steinert junior, did not take a single shot after the first period, instead fended off equally explosive Gianni Ghione of Brick Memorial for a 3-0 victory that was impressive simply because of the manner in which he won it. “I got my points and then it was come to me,” Cray said after becoming the first state champion for Steinert and only the third in Mercer County history. Cray joined Trenton’s Raamiah Bethea, who won in 2013, and Lawrence’s Mark Savino has the only Mercer County wrestling champions. “That’s a sign of maturity,” Steinert head coach Adam Jankos said. Cray, who was bed-ridden for three weeks in February with mononucleosis, literally kept Ghione at arm’s length. Ghione never got close to Cray’s legs. Cray showed similar composure in his semifinal round win over Sebastian Rivera of Christian Brothers. “Countering is all part of the game,” said Cray, who finished the season with a 28-1 record. “As a freshman I was 100 percent all the time. Now I save some energy for the end. Countering is just part of it.” Cray scored the only points he needed with a takedown with 25 seconds left in the first period. He added an escape in the second. The wrestlers spent the entire third period neutral. “We wanted to stay out of the tie-ups,” Jankos said. “They’re both good throwers, so why roll the dice and go up top with him? “The shot wasn’t there. So the plan was to get the points any way we could – takedowns, escapes, in overtime, whatever.” Ghione, a sophomore, knocked off top-seeded Alec Kelly of St. Peter’s Prep by major decision in quarterfinals, finished with a 37-3 record. He reached the final coming out of the preliminaries after losing to Rivera in the Region 6 final. “It feels better than I thought it would,” Cray said. “When I was sick in bed I couldn’t train and I wondered if this would be possible,” Cray said. “I’m very grateful.”
Stomach virus doesn't stop Nick Suriano's historic run at wrestling State Championships By Patrick Lanni | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Undefeated three-time state champion. That will now officially be the tag associated with Bergen Catholic phenom Nick Suriano. The junior took the next step in his historic high school career Saturday, earning a 5-2 decision over Ty Agaisse of Delbarton in the 120-pound final of the NJSIAA/Rothman Institute State Championships. It was his third straight state title and 121st consecutive victory. He did it at half strength. "This one’s special because I wasn’t at my best," said Suriano, who admitted to being hampered by a week-long bout with a stomach virus. “I couldn’t train on Wednesday, I kept it secret from everybody. I weighed in 2.2 pounds under weight this morning and people were looking at me like, what’s up with that?” What’s up with that is if Suriano doesn't already have his name amongst the best in New Jersey history, he'll have that opportunity next season as he tries to become the fourth four-time state champion and second undefeated four-time state champion.
Suriano, who has not given up an offensive point since 2012, is now one of 26 three-time state champions in New Jersey history. And while that’s all good and plenty, his goals and expectations for himself far exceed his high school legacy. "I have things to work on and I want to be a world champion," said Suriano. “I try not to think about it because I get anxious thinking of it. I don’t want to think of it. I just go out and do what I do.” He did Sunday defeating Agaisse with a pair of takedowns and escape in the only state final bout to feature a pair of state champions.
Holy Spirit's Pat D'Arcy dominates on top, finishes on top in 126-pound state tournament By Bill Evans | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com There's different ways to skin a cat and there's different ways to win a state wrestling title. With dogged determination on top, Holy Spirit senior Pat D'Arcy won three straight low-scoring matches to capture the 126-pound state title at the NJSIAA/Rothman Institute State Championships on Sunday. D'Arcy turned Hanover Park two-time state champion Anthony Cefolo with the score tied at 1 in double overtime, then added an escape for a 4-1 victory and the second state title in Holy Spirit program history. Mac Mancuso won the only other title in 2007. D'Arcy won his semifinal, 2-1, in double overtime over North Hunterdon's Ryan Pomrinca. He survived the quarterfinal, 1-0, over Nutley's Joe Ferinde and won the championship despite not scoring a takedown in the last three rounds. "Don't remind me about that," joked D'Arcy. "Whatever it takes to win. No points are given out here. You just have to keep working and eventually things might go your way. "I just wanted to hang on and ride (Cefalo) out. I had his leg, he started to get desperate, I went for a tilt and he put himself in a compromising position. I was lucky to get a couple swipes." Holy Spirit coach Ralph Paolone said he believed D'Arcy had what it took all year to win a state title, even with a two-time champion in his path. "I've known him since he was so small and how hard he worked to get to this point is unbelievable," said D'Arcy. "In practice, in the room, he reminded me right away of Mac. Mac was a machine, and that's what Pat was. "Every close match he was there. We've talked about knowing you're going to win, and he did. You could tell before the final he was ready to go. It was his time." D'Arcy, who is committed to Princeton, finished third in the state as a sophomore and second as a junior. He made the natural progression this year. "I've been waiting all year to get back, I worked my butt off," said D'Arcy. "All these matches could go either way and I was fortunate to come out on top. This is what it's all about. "My whole high school career I've been trying to win a state title. You go out as a kid ... I always wanted to come here and win the state title and it finally happened for me."
Bergen Catholic’s Shane Griffith defeats 2-time champ De La Cruz to win MOW, 132-pound state wrestling championship By James Kratch | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com For Bergen Catholic freshman Shane Griffith, competing against Summit’s Craig De La Cruz was akin to wrestling “against a mirror practically. But in a 132-pound final that pitted two wrestlers with similar approaches, Griffith also matched the knack for the big moment that had helped carry De La Cruz to two state championships, reversing the senior in the first period and then holding on in a wicked scramble down the stretch for a 4-3 triumph Sunday here at the NJSIAA/Rothman Institute Championships, earning Outstanding Wrestler honors in the process. “We both have the same style. I knew it was going to be a tough match,” Griffth said. “He had experience out here, and it’s all new to me. I was a little shaken up at first. But I just went out there and wrestled.” Griffith (33-9) showed some nerves at the beginning, as De La Cruz scored a quick takedown to open the bout. But Griffth escaped soon after and settled in under the bright lights of Boardwalk Hall. “That kind of got the butterflies out,” Bergen Catholic coach Dave Bel said. “You could see it change in his demeanor. It started to click for him.” De La Cruz escaped to take a 3-2 lead at the start of the third period. But Griffith then got the decisive takedown to grab his first lead. De La Cruz did not go down without a fight, coming oh-so-close to a reversal down the stretch in a mad dash that saw both wrestlers all over the place, but Griffith still on top when the clock hit zeroes, completing a four-for-four day for the top-ranked Crusaders in the finals. “I knew I would be capable of achieving this and coming this far,” said Griffith, a seven-time youth state champion. “I just kept working really hard and hoping it would pay off. “I knew I was going to be able to be a part of something like this when I came to Bergen. I just didn’t know it was going to be me the first year having the opportunity to be a part of something so special.” De La Cruz finishes his scholastic career with a 150-12 record. He had won state titles at 120 pounds in 2013 and 126 pounds last year while wrestling for Bound Brook.
Don Bosco's Kyle Bierdumpfel hurdles final barrier with 138-pound state title By Patrick Lanni | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Don Bosco Prep's Kyle Bierdumpfel didn't just get over the hump, he soared over it with a limitless leap in the center of the mat.
After a pair of heartbreaking losses in the state finals in each of the last two seasons, Bierdumpfel exploded towards the roof Sunday after defeating Connor Burkert of St. Peter's Prep, 8-2, in the 138-pound final of the NJSIAA State Championships. "I had that leap planned for two years," said Bierdumpfel as he was swarmed by his coaches, younger brother and teammate Zack Chakonis. "That was my goal all season. I envisioned myself winning late last night when I went to bed. I envisioned it this morning when I took a nap before the match. I saw it, I just had to make it happen." Bierdumpfel broke through with full control in the final against Burkert in a rematch of a January dual where Bierdumpfel's 3-2 win over Burkert gave Don Bosco the match-tying points in a last-bout criteria win. "You have to have a very select mindset," said Bierdumpfel, a junior, when asked about that January showdown. "I forget everything else that happens. It's a whole new match. I had a whole new mindset, and I'm sure he did too." Burkert was only one of two unseeded wrestlers to reach the finals. The senior went through four matches, including two overtime thrillers against Mark McCormick of Camden Catholic and Bergen Catholic's Laurien Anghelina. He met Bierdumpfel with a boat load of momentum, but Bierdumpfel entered with experience and motivation. "My assistant coach Ricky just kept saying 'one more step, one more step, just keep going, keep pushing,'" said Bierdumpfel. "My coaches have really seen how much better I've gotten this year than the other years. "So this year was definitely a lot sweeter than any other year because this was three years in the making." Bierdumpfel ended his junior season with a 35-1 record—with his only loss to national prep champion Matt Kolodzik of Blair. He'll begin his senior season eight wins away from 100 and for the first time as a state champion not a runner-up. He's still waiting for feeling to sink in. "I thought there would be more because the feeling (of winning a state title) is always greater in my head than it is in reality," said Bierdumpfel.
Brick Memorial's Alec Donovan blanks Bound Brook's Stephan Glasgow to win 145-pound state wrestling title By Joe Zedalis | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Unflappable Alec Donovan used two minutes of textbook riding in the second period and an escape in the third for a 1-0 victory over Stephan Glasgow of Bound Brook in the 145-pound final at the NJSIAA/Rothman Institute Wrestling Championships Sunday. With his victory, his 39th of the season against one loss, Donovan became the sixth Brick Memorial wrestler to win a state title. The Golden Mustangs have seven state titles combined. Donovan was one of a Shore Conference record four Brick Memorial wrestlers to reach the state final in a single season. He was the lone victor for the Golden Mustangs. “It hasn’t really hit me yet that I’m a state champion, but right now I am filled with joy,” Donovan said. Donovan, a senior, who was seventh in 2014, had a long road to a state title. As a freshman, Donovan missed weight in the regionals. “Coach O’Cone (former head coach Dan) told me I was the only wrestler he had in 20 years not to make weight,” Donovan recalled at Boardwalk Hall. “But to come from that to become one of his and coach (current head coach Mike) Denver’s works of art is pretty special.” The first period ended scoreless. “It hurt me, but I think it may have hurt him worse,” Donovan explained. “But I also knew I can ride anybody.” And Donovan rode Glasgow. It wasn’t easy, however. “He rolled, he sat out, he stood up … anything to try and get out,” Donovan said. Glasgow, however, never escaped and Donovan went to the third period with a 3-0 lead. “Last year Alec didn’t wrestle well in the quarters, lost and went into the wrestlebacks,” Denver said. “He had three bouts last year that he won with an escape and a rideout, 1-0. He learned what it took to win close matches like that." “Any college coach would love Alec Donovan,” said Denver, who was a Division III national champion. “He is a college-style wrestler who racks up riding time.” Donovan took down to start the third period, however, Glasgow cut him loose before the whistle to work on his feet. “I was a little surprised he didn’t at least try to ride me a little,” Donovan said. “But nobody was going to ride me.” Glasgow, a sophomore, finished 40-5.
Delbarton's Joe Tavoso overcomes Sean Glasgow of Bound Brook in overtime to win state wrestling title at 152 pounds By Brian Deakyne | For NJ Advance Media With time running down in overtime, Joe Tavoso of Delbarton knew he had to take his shot. In the opening 152-pound state final bout against Sean Glasgow of Bound Brook at Boardwalk Hall on Sunday, Tavoso made several attempts to score the statetitle clinching takedown in the sudden victory period. After hooking Glasgow's leg, the Princeton-bound senior closed out the 6-4 victory as he worked around Glasgow and scored the takedown with 10 seconds left in overtime. "I've been in that position a million times," Tavoso said. I picked (his leg) up three times before I could finally get behind and get my two. I just kept telling myself that if you get this win, you're a state champion. I wasn't going to let the opportunity pass me by." Tavoso opened the bout quickly as he grabbed the first takedown, but Glasgow rallied back to take a 4-3 lead after two periods -- including a fast takedown off a restart to take 4-2 lead -- before Tavoso had a pair of escapes to tie the bout at four. "I knew he was going to tap me on my feet and I sort of had an advantage on the mat, so I was going to want to finish," Tavoso said. "But I think I'm better than him on my feet and I wanted to finish the match. He's a great competitor and I got the lucky draw I guess."
The victory was No. 110 in his career and No. 40 on the season for Tavoso, who finished fourth at 152 pounds last year. "It's hard to describe the feelings, it's unreal. It's why we work hard in the room every single day. It's what we train for. I don't know, it's hard to put into words."
David McFadden of DePaul secures second straight state title with 7-2 victory over Brick Memorial's Cliff Ruggiero By Brian Deakyne | For NJ Advance Media His victory wasn't as perfect as he would have liked, but DePaul's David McFadden is a two-time state champion. McFadden, who won a state title at 145 pounds last year, used a dominant effort as he took down Brick Memorial's Cliff Ruggiero, 7-2, in the 160-pound state final bout on Sunday at Boardwalk Hall. Pushing his record to 43-0 on the year, the Virginia Tech-bound McFadden wasn't necessarily pleased with his five-point victory, but understood Ruggiero's strategy throughout the match. "My mindset coming into this tournament was not only to win, but to dominate," McFadden said. "I didn't dominate how I would have liked in the finals, but he's a really tough competitor. I came out with the win, so I guess I can be really happy about that." Ruggiero challenged McFadden in the opening period and kept the bout scoreless until there were two seconds left in the first period, when McFadden scored his first takedown. McFadden opened the second period with a quick escape to take a 3-0 lead and controlled the bout from there on to secure the title. "I wanted to be up 4-1 going into the second," McFadden said. "I thought I'd take him down in the beginning of the first period, cut him and take him down at the end of the period to go up 4-1. If that didn't work, I knew I better get a takedown at the end of the first period. The coin flip went my way, I went up 3-0, and from then on, I felt in control. "He was wrestling me really tough in the first period and he put me in a few situations I didn't want to be in. I knew where I was on the mat and I knew where he was good. He had a good game plan coming in, but at the end of the day, I'm the one with the state title." In July, McFadden took second at the Fargo junior national championships in North Dakota. He hasn't lost since. "I told myself after Fargo to remember what it feels like to finish second. I haven't done it since then, and I don't plan on doing it again." The loss by Ruggiero was the first of the state tournament for Brick Memorial, which entered the finals with a 13-0 mark as a team. The Ocean County program sent four wrestlers to the finals, the most in Shore Conference history.
Bergen Catholic’s Joe Grello defeats Bound Brook’s Joshua Ugalde to win 170-pound state wrestling championship By James Kratch | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com If there was one thing Bergen Catholic’s Joe Grello took away from his dual meet loss to Bound Brook’s Joshua Ugalde earlier this year, it was the realization he had to control the tempo if the two met again. “He slowed down my pace the last match,” Grello said. “I had to have him wrestle my pace.” Thirty-five days later, from Super Bowl Sunday on Jan. 31 to Championship Sunday here at Boardwalk Hall, Grello and Ugalde met again. And Grello did just that, dominating the third period en route to a 6-2 win in the 170-pound state final at the NJSIAA/Rothman Institute Championships. “I don’t know if it’s hit me yet,” Grello said. “I worked really hard for this, and it feels great.” Grello, who battled a meniscus injury earlier in the year, had lost 1-0 to Ugalde in the dual meet, getting ridden out for the entirety of the third period. And it looked for a few moments like the state final might follow the same sort of script. After a scoreless first period, Ugalde, a state runner-up at 160 pounds last year notched a reversal in the second to take a 2-0 lead and put himself in position to try and ride out the final 3:20 in regulation. But Ugalde (37-2) was hit with a locked hands call, making it 2-1 after two periods. He quickly cut Grello to start the third and tie the bout. “I had to get a takedown,” Grello said. And that he did, Grello notched the decisive takedown to grab the lead within the first minute of the final period and then rode Ugalde out from there, adding two back points for good measure down the stretch. Grello finishes the season with a 26-3 record. The state medal is his second; he took seventh last year at 152 pounds. Grello now has a 89-18 career record. Ugalde, who will wrestle next year at Maryland, finishes his career at 140-22 with three medals – two runner-up finishes and a sixth-place finish at 152 pounds in 2013.
Bergen Catholic's Kevin Mulligan tops CJ LaFragola of St. Joseph (Hamm.) to win 182pound state wrestling title By Joe Zedalis | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Kevin Mulligan was long and that couldn’t be wrong at the NJSIAA/Rothman Institute Wrestling Championships at Boardwalk Hall Sunday.
Mulligan, the top-seeded junior from Bergen Catholic, used his 6-foot-4 frame to his advantage. Mulligan scored two takedowns on counters of shots by finalist CJ LaFragola of St. Joseph (Hamm) with leg hooks and won the 182-pound state title with a 5-1 win. “That was my toughest bout in the tournament,” said Mulligan, who improved to 39-5 with the win. “He (LaFragola) was much stronger than I expected and a great competitor. “He came at me a lot and I really didn’t expect that,” Mulligan added. “But I felt like I controlled the match.” LaFragola (45-2) broke a scoreless tie with an escape off a hard switch with 1:03 left in the second period. With time running down, LaFragola shot looking for a Hi-C. Mulligan stopped LaFragola, hooked a leg and came up on top for the takedown. Mulligan used a similar maneuver counting a shot by LaFragola in the third. “His length didn’t help,” LaFragola said. “Once he gets those hooks in he was tough to fight off “I wanted to get a couple of shots and push as hard as I could,” LaFragola said. As was the case during the regular season, Bergen Catholic’s received back-to-back wins from Joe Grello at 170 and then Mulligan at 182. Grello won the 170pound total. “Watching him win got me going,” Mulligan said. “We done the same thing all over the country. Mulligan, who won by major decision in the semifinals, also had a 7-0 decision and a pin during his state championship run.
Tyree Sutton stuns Holy Cross' Matt Correnti in OT at 195 pounds to win Keansburg's first state title By Bill Evans | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Tyree Sutton became Keansburg High School’s first state champion in dramatic fashion at the NJSIAA/Rothman Institute State Championships on Sunday, capturing the 195-pound title, 5-3, in overtime over Holy Cross’ Matt Correnti. Sutton took Correnti down for a match-tying takedown with four seconds left and countered a shot for the winning takedown in overtime. The matchup lived up to the billing of two wrestlers who came in with equal 41-0 records. “In practice all week, we drilled situations, me being down two, down three,” said Sutton. “I was definitely prepared to get a takedown in those moments, 30 seconds, 10 seconds. I expected to get it. I was just getting after it.” Sutton rode Correnti for the entire second period and the match was scoreless entering the third. But Correnti earned three near-fall points when Sutton said he wasn’t sure there should have been a count. “I was shocked, it was an iffy call,” said Sutton. Sutton escaped to make it a 3-1 match and dropped Correnti on the line with four seconds left. The Lancer junior and Holy Cross coaching staff argued it wasn’t a takedown, but to no avail and the wrestlers headed to overtime where Sutton prevailed. “I’d have to watch the tape (to see if the tying takedown should have counted),” said Holy Cross coach Adam Cooney. ‘The kid did a great job, got in on his legs and the ref thought it was two. You have to keep wrestling in overtime. It’s gotta be tough, but you have to do it. You have to have a short memory.” Cooney can relate to Correnti’s disappointment, having lost in the state final himself before bouncing back to win two titles. “This is Matt’s ultimate goal and to come up short is extremely hard,” said Cooney. “It doesn’t feel good. I’ve been there, but it will be a motivator and the experience of being in the finals will be a huge asset next year.” Sutton was posing for a lot of pictures in the minutes after the match, receiving plenty of support from the Keansburg community. He’s been answering questions all weekend about if he ever thought about leaving for a more prominent program. “It feels amazing to be the first,” said Sutton. “I have a lot of young wrestlers coming up that look up to me, so it’s definitely a good feeling to give them someone to look up to. “I kind of felt like a free agent during the summer. There were a couple schools who wanted me to go, but I have a great staff, the coaches love me and I get so much support from this town. I came up through the Keansburg rec program, so I might as well stay.”
St. Peter's Prep alpha dog Christian Colucci captures 220-pound state title By Patrick Lanni | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com You can officially call Christian Colucci the pack leader. The St. Peter’s Prep senior standout solidified a season-long spot at the top of the rankings with a 3-0 decision over Marc McDonald of West Essex in the 220pound final of the NJSIAA State Championships. When he toed the line Sunday at Boardwalk Hall, Colucci still had the confidence oozing from his Region 4 semifinal victory over McDonald. He showed it instantly, sticking a takedown two seconds into the bout. “It was important for me to go in and set the tone that I’m the alpha dog in this match, and that’s there no chance of you ever winning,” Colucci said. He then rode out McDonald and controlled the rest of the way to give St. Peter’s Prep its first state champion since Lenny Richardson took the 145-pound title in 2012. “It feels good to go down in history at Prep especially with the family I’ve been through,” Colucci said. “The nine or 10 of us seniors have sweat blood and tears together for the past four years so to cap it off like this is special. “I know we didn’t win a team state title, but to capture an individual state title feels amazing.”Colucci, who only surrendered three points the entire state tournament, finished his career with a 112-25 mark, three Region 4 titles and three District 16 titles. He will wrestle at Lehigh University next fall with New Jersey’s highest high school wrestling honor. “It feels great to be a champ finally,” Colucci said. “It’s great for me going into college and setting me up to become a national champion in college.”
Don Bosco's Zack Chakonis shakes off two finals disappointments, wins 285-pound state title By Bill Evans | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Don Bosco Prep senior Zack Chakonis tries to not watch the videos of his back-to-back last-second losses to Delsea’s Bryan Dobzanski in the last two 220-pound state finals. But he admitted the DVD of Sunday’s match might find its way onto the TV in his house more than a few times. Chakonis shed the disappointment of two straight second-place finishes by easing to a 5-1 victory over Brick Memorial’s Nick Rivera in the 285-pound final at the NJSIAA/Rothman Institute State Championships Sunday. Dobzanski beat Chakonis, 5-4, two years ago fighting off a takedown attempt in the final seconds. Last year, Chakonis nearly had a late takedown and back points before Dobzanski secured a match-winning reversal with three seconds left in double OT. “I saw them once and then I put them away so I don’t think of them too much, but my dad keeps watching it,” said Chakonis. “I don’t like looking back too much. But this one will be on the TV for the next four weeks straight, I can guarantee.” On Sunday, Chakonis was happy to not have the outcome decided in the final seconds. The Northwestern-bound senior bumped up to heavyweight this year to prepare for college. “I just wanted to come down here and dominate my way through and I kind of came close that,” said Chakonis. “You can’t describe the feeling. Little kids here saw me lose twice and I never gave up. I thought it was going to be last year and it wasn’t. It made this year even sweeter, to finish senior year with a nice win. “I’ll probably still look back knowing me, but I’m happy with what I have right now. I’ve been blessed.” Asked where he would watch his teammate 138-pounder Kyle Bierdumpfel as he tried to shake off two finals losses of his own, Chakonis said he might split to celebrate in the ocean. Bierdumpfel ended up winning his first title as well, beating St. Peter’s Connor Burkert, 8-2. “We pushed each other to get here,” said Chakonis. “I’ve been working for it since I could crawl, and it’s a great feeling to say I finally accomplished it and I’m sure for Kyle it’s the same way.”
Bergen Catholic captures four state individual wrestling championships to match modern record By James Kratch | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com After a sensational team season that saw it go wire-to-wire as the state's top-ranked team for the second straight year and establish itself as the class of New Jersey by a wide margin, Bergen Catholic scored an even more impressive achievement here Sunday to close out the NJSIAA/Rothman Institute Championships. The top-ranked Crusaders went a perfect four-for-four in the state finals, becoming just the third team since the end of World War II to have a quartet of state individual titlists in the same season. "It's an awesome moment," Bergen Catholic coach Dave Bell said. "It's affirmation." Nick Suriano won his third career title at 120 pounds while Shane Griffith (132), Joe Grello (170) and Kevin Mulligan (182) each captured their first, matching the feat High Point accomplished in 2011 when it had four champions in Nick Francavilla (125), Drew Wagenhoffer (140), Ethan Orr (171) and heavyweight Billy Smith. Prior to High Point, the last team to have four champions was Newton in 1949. "Every team comes down here with high expectations and great seasons and talented wrestlers," Bell said. "You can never account for what is going to happen, but to come down and perform the way they did, is the best feeling in the world." In addition to the four champions, Bergen Catholic won four more medals to finish with a tournament-high eight. Carmen Ferrante finished eighth in the state at 106 pounds, Peter Lipari took seventh at 126 pounds and Danny DeLorenzi and Connor O'Brien took fourth at 195 and 220 pounds, respectively.

2016 NJSIAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
How to Initially Populate the Wrestleback Brackets “Loser of” will appear on the Updated Brackets Saturday Morning. But to begin the wrestlebacks many coaches and fans have asked how this is done. Actually it is quite simple. Using 106 as an example all the way through this explanation, the loser of the preliminary round bouts (match numbers 1 - 8) drop straight down, on every other top line, into bouts 501 - 508. Then, the loser of the pre-quarter-final round matches (match numbers 113 - 120) drop down in REVERSE order, one every other line, into bouts 508 501). So, looking at 106, the Match #1 loser of Diedrich vs. Kerwin, will wrestle Saturday at 10:00 am in match #501. The winner of Match #1 will wrestle Manchio in the 7:00 round on Friday night (Match #113). The loser of Match #113 will drop down to Match #508. The wrestleback bracket at 106 is populated as follows ... Match #501 is the Loser of Match #1 vs. the Loser of Match #120 Match #502 is the Loser of Match #2 vs. the Loser of Match #119 Match #503 is the Loser of Match #3 vs. the Loser of Match #118 Match #504 is the Loser of Match #4 vs. the Loser of Match #117 Match #505 is the Loser of Match #5 vs. the Loser of Match #116 Match #506 is the Loser of Match #6 vs. the Loser of Match #115 Match #507 is the Loser of Match #7 vs. the Loser of Match #114 Match #508 is the Loser of Match #8 vs. the Loser of Match #113 You can follow this pattern in all 14 brackets. We hope this helps!!!

NJSIAA
We help make them happen.
At Wakefern-ShopRite, we know it takes team effort to reach a goal. That’s why we’re proud to “team up” with NJSIAA as a Corporate Partner sponsoring the NJSIAA ShopRite Basketball Championship. We established the ShopRite Cup to recognize the top-performing high school athletic programs in the state. On the field or behind the scenes, ShopRite supports those who help student-athletes shine bright. It’s just something a good neighbor should do. After all, we live here, too.
