LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Dear Members I have been the Public Relations Officer since last year. My main job is to promote BIWC in the public eye in order to present a good image of the club and recruit new members. One of the promotional ideas I have been working on is to establish a link with EUNIC (European Union National Institutes for Culture) Berlin, you will find a link to the group on our webpage for members information. There is also a link to OPEN DOOR, a network of 73 women´s clubs all over the world of which we are a member. It is useful for our members to know which other clubs are in OPEN DOOR when moving to or visiting other countries and vice versa. I have also created an open Facebook site which is to be used for promotional purposes. There I will announce the Meet and Greets and upload pictures of our diverse activities sent by the SIG coordinators. The open site should not to be confused with the club´s closed group site which can only be used by our members. Some of you may be aware of another open Facebook page for the club which was established in 2012, but has remained generally inactive. It has been agreed by the EC that this older page should be closed. Please visit our new open Facebook page at BIWC Open Facebook Page and it would be nice if you could all ‘like’ the page in order to help promote the club. A good opportunity to promote the club this year will be participation in the AKTIONSTAG FÜR EIN SCHÖNES BERLIN, Friday 18 or Saturday 19 September, www.aktionstag-für-ein-schönes-berlin.de/. This event is organised by a big charity and supported by the BSR (Berliner Stadtreinigung). The idea is to select a public area and collect rubbish which has been dropped by our fellow Berliners. Everything necessary - gloves, overalls, sacks etc. will be provided by the BSR, who will also pick up the rubbish. Please save the dates. We will inform you about the details in the September Newsletter. It would be great if as many of you would participate as are able. For 2016, it would be nice if a group of our members who run or walk regularly could participate in the AVON Women´s Run in the discipline Nordic walking – 5 km – http://www.berlin.de/events/2101687-2229501-avonrunning-berlinerfrauenlauf.html. The date has not been announced yet but it will probably take place in May. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any other ideas on how to promote the club. Daniela Lorenz

CLUB NEWS New Special Interest Groups The EC recently approved the following three new SIGs: Elegant Soirees This new interest group, coordinated by Penny Fischer, Fiona Paschen and Christine Krüger, will offer members the opportunity to experience unique, elegant and up-market social gatherings. Focus will be either evening or weekend gatherings and members can bring their partner or friend. This will not be a monthly activity, but organised when suitable locations and opportunities meet their criteria. Their first activity is scheduled for Saturday, 22 August (see June newsletter for more details). The Elegant Soirees can be contacted at: [email protected] Business Lunch This new SIG, led by My-Linh Kunst, will be held bi-monthly starting in September 2015. The idea behind this SIG is to give our working and nonworking members the chance to lunch/dine at nice, sometimes expensive restaurants. Many expensive restaurants and/or hotels offer a "Business Lunch" for business people offering them a social network during the lunch break. However, these lunches are open to everyone. Restaurants offer a special menu, Mon - Fri, and usually cost under €15 per person for a 2course or sometimes 3-course meal between the hours of 12:00 and 15:00 hours. Look out for more details in coming newsletters. Patchwork and Quilting Meg Baier has agreed to host this SIG in the privacy of her home. Plans are to begin in October. More details about this SIG will be published in the September Newsletter.

New Club Members We would like to welcome our most recent new members Gina Cisneros (Ecuador), and Cecilia Gasper (USA).

Daniela Lorenz Lisa Vogt [email protected] Tuesday, 28 July 2015, 11:00-13:00 - meeting time 10:40 Freie Scholle – a garden city in Tegel We will tour one of the most attractive and well-known garden cities in Berlin – the “Freie Scholle” (free piece of land) with 404 detached homes as well as 606 apartments, community greens and halls, playgrounds, shops and a restaurant. It was founded as a cooperative in 1895 in order to provide affordable living space for workers in natural surroundings, with gardens to grow their own vegetables and fruit. We will stroll past the idyllic houses built by the founder Gustav Lilienthal, with prefabricated concrete slabs in a simple country style, at the beginning of the 20th century and continue to the sections with semidetached and apartment houses designed in the Bauhaus style by Bruno Taut in the 1920s, which have been beautifully refurbished in the original colours. We will meet residents whose families have lived in the settlement for two-three generations and have the opportunity to see their gardens. At the end of the tour we will stop for lunch in the restaurant Schollenkrug, one of the early buildings on the site used as a community centre and restaurant.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS Exploring Berlin Maria Breitfeld-Markowski Mary Lynn Werner-Minges [email protected] There will be no activity in July or August.

Did You Know? Peculiarities of the Number Thirteen This year – 2015 – there are three months with a "Friday the 13th". The first was in February and the second in March, the third will be in November. Although some researchers suggest that having Friday the 13th three times in a year only occurs every eleven years, this is a myth since we experienced this phenomenon in 2009. The 'dislike' of the number 13 is visible in many places, for example many hospitals have no room number 13. Readers might like to make it a 'habit' to check the tall buildings that you enter to discover whether there is a 13th floor! Various buildings simply drop the number – as if it doesn’t exist. There is a special name for the fear of the number thirteen – even I am unable to pronounce it: triskaidekaphobia. Many people organising parties or dinners go to incredible lengths to ensure that the number of attendees do not drop to thirteen. In fact, there are restaurants in France that offer guests arranging group events the ability to engage a "quatorzième": a professional 14th guest! --Jill Horwitz

CINEMA SCENE Well, after two months absence from Berlin I am really out of the (movie-) picture! Having not had the opportunity to see any film previews, I can not really make recommendations about new releases. But I am able to give you a couple of hints. You might enjoy the dramatic historical romance, based on Thomas Hardy's novel: Far from the Madding Crowd, aka Am grünen Rand der Welt (16 July).

The Golden Bear winner of the 2015 Berlinale will be released 23 July. Taxi Teheran was directed by Jafar Panahi (in Persian and/or German). And as a fan of Colin Firth, I am looking forward to The Railway Man, which co-stars Nicole Kidman. (25 June), aka Die Liebe seines Lebens. If you are interested in writing reviews about up-coming releases for our Newsletter, please contact me for details. I am looking for members who would be willing to contribute 1 or 2 reviews a year. Previews (gratis, by invitation only) are during the day, weekdays. -Mary Thießen

CULTURE CORNER Berlin Historical Association The BHA holds monthly lectures (usually on the fourth Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) on a variety of historical themes with informative guest speakers. BHA also offers tours to places of historical interest in and around Berlin. All lectures and visits take place in the English language. Guests are welcome. However, registration is a must and there is a small fee to participate. BHA is the only English-speaking historical association in Berlin. As this July is the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Potsdam Agreement that finalized the division of Berlin and of Germany, BHA will offer a tour of the Cecilienhof – where the agreement was signed! The date of the tour is Sunday, 19 July. The final details – including price of participation – will not be available until after the Newsletter deadline. BHA is planning a tour of the Weissensee Cemetery in the second half of August. ►Contact details – For more information, contact [[email protected]] or send a fax to: 81 81 99 91. Exhibition News Travelling Exhibition Wednesday, 1 July to Sunday, 30 August The Allied Museum is hosting the travelling exhibition: “Routes of Liberation: European Legacies of the Second World War“. It is the "only museum in Germany to serve as an official partner of the exhibition ”Routes of Liberation,“ which is under the patronage of the president of the EU Parliament Martin Schulz". As 2015 is the 70th anniversary of the end of WW II in Europe, the travelling exhibition turns its attention decisively on the liberation of Europe: the American, British and Commonwealth troops moving through Western Europe and on into Germany. The Red Army, bringing Communism in its wake, advanced through Eastern Europe. The multi-media display provides an opportunity to explore the period right at the end of the war in 1945 and considers "its consequences from various national perspectives". The display is enhanced by a selected number of "biographies of civilians and military figures from various nations" that help to illuminate the cross-border route as well as the varied points of view. ►Venue: Nicholson Memorial Library, Allied Museum, Clayallee 135, 14195 Berlin. ►Hours of Opening: Tuesday to Sunday, 10.00 to 18.00; closed on Mondays. ►Admittance: Free. 32

CULTURE CORNER Layers of Time – German History through the Lens of the Berlin Zeughaus Until Sunday, 20 September The exhibition "Layers of Time" is part of the German History Museum's (DHM) programme, "International Museum Fellowship". "Layers of Time" is described as a "temporary intervention" as the items are embedded in the permanent exhibition. Special viewing devices allow visitors to look at "rarely seen images from the museum’s archives and collections" as well as to compare "the past with the present". In this way strands of the display offer an especially fascinating "journey into the history of the museum". ►Venue: Deutsches Historisches Museum (DHM), Unter den Linden 2, 10117 Berlin-Mitte ►Hours of Opening: Daily from 10.00 to 18.00. ►Admittance: €8 / Reduced: €4; Children up to 18 years – no charge. ►Getting there: Buses 100, 200 or TXL to the Staatsoper or Lustgarten stops. --Jill Horwitz

CULTURE CORNER Re-enactment of historical Victory at Großbeeren Every August, the town of Großbeeren – which is about 10km south of Berlin on the B101 – celebrates the victory battle between the Army of Napoleon and the Prussian Army of Berlin. This battle was fought on 23 August 1813, in Großbeeren. General von Bülow led the Prussian Army and was able to defeat the enemy and stop the taking and occupation of Berlin by Napoleon's army.

2015 is the 202nd "Victory Festival" (Siegesfest). On Saturday (22 August) there will be an historical market (next to the church) from 12:00 – 19:00. Also on the Saturday, from (14:00 – 16:00, there will be a re-enactment of the Großbeeren battle. This takes place next to the Bülow pyramid on Ruhlsdorfer Straße. The two armies usually camp out on Küsterteich (Küster pond) for the weekend and visitors are able to visit the area and talk to the participants. The pond is behind the school in Großbeeren and can be reached from Post Straße. All the museums will be open all weekend. More information can be found (in German) at: [www.grossbeeren.de], or tel: 033701-32 88 61. --Jill Horwitz
