IN THE SPOTLIGHT… Betty Seiberling by Carrie Tomko Resides in: Copley, Ohio Member since: 1986. Connection to The University of Akron: My husband John retired from the United States Congress in 1986, and we moved back to our house in Bath Township. Soon after that, he joined the UA Law School faculty, teaching a course on the legislation process. Later, he was director of the Center for Peace Studies at UA. Offices held in the Club and Participation: Chairman of the Tour Group for about 15 years (1989-2005); Corresponding Secretary for a few years; Member of the Book Review group every year of 5

membership. Betty commented on Tour Group experiences: “We visited interesting places all around Ohio. We had faithful car pool drivers such as Sharon Gandee, Carol Ramey, and Marie Richardson, and others. An informal committee which met to choose the tours included Carolyn Cox, Sharon Gandee and Carol Ramey. One of the best trips was April 2003 to the Toledo Museum of Art to see a special exhibit of Van Gogh paintings. Each masterpiece was hung on a separate wall; the wall painted in a perfect subtle color to bring out the rare beauty of the painting. After lunch in the cafeteria, we had a sociable ride home discussing the day.” She continued: “On a beautiful spring morning, we went to the Kent Bog. Our guide was Guide Denny, who was the Chief of Natural Areas and Reserves. At the bog he showed us pitcher plants, huge ferns, and then he said ‘Follow me to the Triangle Lake a few miles east.’ We all had lunch at the Pufferbelly restaurant.” With regard to the Book Review group, Betty enjoyed the ladies: “The women in these groups included talented teachers, librarians, and enthusiastic readers who shared their view of both new books and the classics.” About her days on the Board as Corresponding Secretary, Betty stated: “I was on the Board for a couple of years as Corresponding Secretary. We met at the Women's City Club and enjoyed lunch after the meetings.” Travel: Betty shared: “I had many wonderful trips with my husband and his congressional committees from Alaska to Siberia; to Morocco, Cairo, St. Petersburg, etc. One marvelous trip after John's retirement was a cruise in the Mediterranean Sea from Venice and stopping at islands and famous historic sites on the way to Istanbul.” Other Activities: Betty was one of the very first guides at Stan Hywet Hall, starting from the opening day in 1957 and until John was elected to Congress in 1970. Betty added, “During the 60s, I was interested in the Bath Volunteers for Service. I was a docent at the Akron Art Institute until 1970. I am an amateur poet and artist.” Comments from Betty about one member in particular: With Carolyn Cox’s being last month’s SPOTLIGHT for the UAWC newsletter, Betty had this to say, “Carolyn Cox [is one] hard act to follow. I have always thought of Carolyn as a perfect extrovert, while I am a quiet introvert, but the two of us have been good friends for 25 years.” Finally, she expressed her thanks for the valued assistance of Jackie Fay in the preparation of this article. A further comment from Carrie: I have REALLY enjoyed meeting and speaking with Betty Seiberling. She is so down-to-earth, yet an aristocratic woman of dignity and sincerity. Comments from Carolyn Cox about Betty: I guess Betty and I have a “mutual-admiration” friendship. When we Coxes moved to Akron in 1970, we immediately worked in John Seiberling’s first Congressional campaign and the next seven also. When John retired and joined the University Law School faculty, I literally “captured” Betty for Faculty Women’s Club (name at that time). What a wonderfully loyal member she’s been. She was superb as tour chair for many years. Her “contacts” were invaluable as we traveled all over northern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. She has added great insight and intelligence to both our book groups. As friends, Betty and I have shared many family joys and sorrows on a personal level. I so admire her fierce honesty, sweet modesty, and courageous persistence in spite of her daunting visual challenges. She is a treasured friend and enriches the Club for all of us with her continuing participation. Thanks, Betty. MEET NEW MEMBER . . . . Evelyn DiBello. She lives in Medina; she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from the University of Akron and has always worked in Akron. She has been the development director for the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences for the past 2 1/2 years. 6

Evelyn has two sons and a four- year-old grandson. Her youngest son is currently a student at UA. This past May she took a fabulous trip to Ireland and Germany with her sister Peg. She loves walking, playing golf, and playing with my grandson, of course!
