Benilde-St. Margaret's wins Alpine, Brunkow top individual; Roseville Area wins Nordic ski racing Alpine Skiing Benilde-St. Margaret’s of St. Louis Park claimed its first Alpine title by placing four skiers in the top nine finishers. The victory marked an improvement from the Red Knights’ runner-up finish in 1999 and also ended Edina’s three-year hold on the championship. The Red Knights won with 171 points, five points more than runner-up Edina. For the second consecutive year, the Ponies of Stillwater Area finished third. They earned 138 points. Benilde-St. Margaret’s Leigh Hellrung was the highest finisher for the Red Knights. She placed second in the team competition and earned 47 points. She was followed by teammate Jackie Marceau in sixth place. The Red Knights’ Lindsey Steiner and Catherine Brown finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Danielle Clements and Michelle Buck completed the Benilde-St. Margaret’s team. Amy Brunkow of Edina placed first in both the team and individual competitions. It was her second individual title. She won in 1998, and was poised as a repeat champion last year. But she straddled a gate at the top of the course on her first run and was disqualified. Duluth East’s Gladys Weidt skied away with the title in 1999. Brunkow didn’t have any problems during the 2000 meet. She posted the fastest times on both runs, 37.91 on the first and 40.41 on the second, for a winning total of 1:18.42. Lori Hewitt of Mankato West improved on a 1999 ninth-place finish to claim runner-up honors with a total time of 1:20.03. Rachel Roth of Wayzata finished third with a total time of 1:21.18. She placed sixth in 1999. The State Alpine Ski Meet was held at Giants Ridge near Biwabik on February 17. Nordic Ski Racing At the 2000 State Nordic Ski Racing Meet, Roseville Area won its second overall title and its first since 1995. The Raiders won with 217 points and banished the two-time defending champions from Duluth East to third place. Hastings and Duluth East both finished

the meet with 209 points, but Hastings was awarded the runner-up trophy based on the scores of its third-finishing pursuit skier and second-finishing classical and freestyle skiers. Three races determine team titles: a pursuit event, which consists of one 5-kilometer classical race and one 5-kilometer freestyle race, skied by the same competitor; a separate 5-kilometer classical race; and a separate 5-kilometer freestyle race. The top three pursuit finishers, the top two classical finishers, and the top two freestyle finishers are combined for the team total. The 2000 state meet marked the second year of the pursuit event, which replaced the 4x3K relay. Roseville Area’s Anna McLoon, who won the freestyle race in 1999, won the pursuit event. She skied the classical race in 18:34.0 and the freestyle race in 17.51.6, for a total time of 36:26.5. Johanna Winters also posted a sixth place finish for the Raiders with a total time of 38:21.1. Lindsey Weier of Mahtomedi, who placed sixth in the same event in 1999, finished in second place with a total time of 36:49.1. Lindsay Williams of Hastings skied into third place with a total time of 36:53.1. In the classical race, Jessica Salvatore was the highest finisher for Roseville Area. She earned third-place honors with a time of 20:49.1. Duluth East’s Rachel Daw won the championship in 18:35.6. Last year, Daw won the pursuit event. Hastings’ Cindy Schultze finished in second place with a time of 20:42.8, up from her 1999 finish of 24th in the same event. In the freestyle race, the Raiders’ Katie Somers took second place to secure the title for Roseville Area. She finished the course in 18:29.4. Mary Anderson of Elk River Area won the race in 18:01.4. In 1999, Anderson placed fifth in the pursuit event. Abby Rogosheske of St. Cloud Tech finished third with a time of 18:57.1. Kelly Damrow, Andrea Hamre and Annie Taff also skied for the Raiders. The State Nordic Ski Racing Meet was held at Giants Ridge near Biwabik on February 18.
