“Active Learning Tool” Original Source: Shelly Stanton, Business Teacher, Billings West High School, Billings, MT Time to complete: 120-180 minutes National Content Standards Family and Consumer Science Standards: 1.1.6, 1.2.1 National Council of Economic Education Teaching Standards: 13, 14 National Standards for Business Education:  Career Development: II.A.2, II.A.3  Economics:  Personal Finance: Objectives Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:  Identify appropriate positive characteristics within the workforce  Recognize an individual’s values, needs, and wants when making a career choice  Understand how decisions made within a job will affect other areas of life Introduction Choosing a career is a difficult decision for young adults to make. However, it is a very important decision. The average person will spend a significant amount of time at work in their daily schedule. The career they choose must provide them with a sense of satisfaction and be a proper balance to support the fulfillment of their individual values. There are several variables that influence an individual’s decision, including an analysis of their strengths and weaknesses, future demand for a career, work style conditions, and much more. By identifying with a young worker bee, students will be able to recognize the advantages and disadvantages of career choices as well as analyzing their personal values and understanding the impact a career has on family and friends. *Note to educator: To complete the Bee Movie Job Application Rubric 5.0.42.B1 and the Bee Movie Resume Rubric 5.0.42.B2 project reinforcement activities for this lesson, it is recommended that this lesson is taught in conjunction with the Job Application 1.1.13 and Developing a Resume 1.1.5 Level I lesson plans. This will help to ensure the participants have the proper background knowledge and understanding of terminology to effectively complete the activities. 1. Ask participants to form groups of 2-3 and brainstorm answers to the following questions: a. Identify three benefits and three drawbacks to the following situation: i. You are told that you would be doing the same job every day of the year for the rest of your life. 1. Participant answers may vary however some may include: a. Positives: i. ii. You will always know your co-workers. iii. Job stress will decrease over time. iv. Job security. b. Drawbacks: i. Job may be boring. ii. Never have a day off. iii. Individual may not be challenged. iv. May not enjoy the job. b. List current jobs for which you would be able to meet the minimum requirements. i. Answers may vary however some may include: 1. Food service industry a. Waiters, waitresses, hostess, etc. 2. Retail industry a. Grocery store attendant, cashier, etc. b. Store associate. 2. Tell students that they will be watching a movie about a bee who is going through the decision making process of job selection.

* Note to educator: Depending upon how in-depth of a review is desired, select facilitation option 1 or 2. In option 1, participants review the movie and work in groups to reflect. This will take approximately 120 minutes. For option 2, participants review the movie, select jobs, and work in groups to create a resume or job application. This will take approximately 180 minutes. 3. Option 1: a. Participants will individually complete The Bee Movie worksheet 5.0.42.A1 4. Option 2: a. Break participants into groups of 2-3: i. Distribute the Career Pathway worksheet 5.0.42.A2 to be completed during the movie. ii. Assign half of the groups to track Barry Benson during the movie and the other half to track Vanessa Bloome. 5. Have participants watch the “Bee Movie” while completing their worksheet. Conclusion Option 1: 1. Break participants into small groups of 2-3. 2. Have each group compare and contrast their worksheet answers. Option 2: 1. Have small groups discuss what they wrote for either Barry or Vanessa. 2. Instruct participants to find one person in the room that had the opposite character of them and introduce themselves as if they were the character. Therefore, if they wrote for Barry, they will need to find someone who wrote for Vanessa and introduce themselves as Barry and vice versa. They should use the information from notes taken during the movie and first group discussion. 3. As a class, discuss the differences between Barry and Vanessa’s choices. Identify how the situations Barry and Vanessa encountered are similar to real life. Discuss how this movie relates to participant’s lives.
