Barolo - 2007s & 2005 Riservas 16 Jun 2011 by Walter Speller See Nebbiolo week - a guide for links to all of this week's Nebbiolo articles. Below are my reviews of more than 160 Barolo 2007s and more than 20 Barolo Riserva 2005s, including some really excellent wines, the background to which is given in The Grosslagen of Barolo. Within each commune, the wines are listed in the order they were presented (by vineyard). The picture above shows me in reflective mood at one of the many tastings staged in the afternoons after the Nebbiolo Prima tastings each morning. (Photograph taken by Maurizio Gjivovich.) 2007 BAROLO BLENDS FROM MORE THAN ONE COMMUNE Terre da Vino, Paesi Tuoi 2007 Barolo 15 Drink 2013-19 Grinzane Cavour, Castiglione Falletto. Concentrated ruby with broader rim just beginning to show orange. Quite soft and round, with peppery notes. Slow on the palate but with good length and quite stalky but not green tannin. (WS) Le Strette, Le Strette 2007 Barolo 15 Drink 2013-17 Novello-Barolo. Intense, almost deep ruby. Heady, spicy liqueur notes and a touch of dried fruit. Makes for a heady cocktail. Already open. Easy going, dried-fruit palate, very ripe and accessible, but there is a hefty dose of slightly drying tannin on the finish. Perhaps too forward to age well? (WS) Montaribaldi, Borzoni 2007 Barolo 15.5 Drink 2014-22 Gallo Grinzane. Concentrated ruby with orange tinges. Lively, red fruit, cherry liqueur and earthy notes. Sweet and almost rich attack. Very slow to open up to cherry and seems a tad austere too. Fragrant finish, though. Definitely needs a bit of age. (WS) Terre da Vino, Essenze 2007 Barolo 15.5 Drink 2012-17 La Morra, Barolo, Novello, Serralunga d'Alba, Monforte d'Alba. Concentrated, deep ruby with small orange tinged rim. Very backward nose, with hints of cinnamon and oak, and slightly dusty. Fairly light on the palate with highish acidity. Persistent tannin looking rather austere on the finish. (WS) Terre del Barolo 2007 Barolo 15.5 Drink 2012-17 Ruby with orange tinges. Initially quite sweet and with hints of oak. Almost gentle, medium-bodied feel on the palate with elevated acidity. Powdery persistent tannin. (WS) Famiglia Anselma 2007 Barolo 15.5 Drink 2013-20 Barolo, Monforte d'Alba, Serralunga d'Alba. Only just medium ruby with broad orangetinged rim. Balsamic and kitchen cupboard spices and very slow to open up to

strawberry jam and hint of leather. Grainy tannic structure with underlying sweet and spicy fruit on a medium weight palate. Interesting fragrant finish with pronounced tannin. (WS) Prunotto 2007 Barolo 15 Drink 2014-19 Barolo, Monforte d'Alba, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba. Concentrated ruby with dark centre and small orange rim. Chocolate at first, but palate much more genuinely fruity. Good balance with acidity and stalky tannin. Tannic finish. Not overly complex, but could do with a couple more years. (WS) Gianni Gagliardo, Serre 2007 Barolo 16.5 Drink 2012-19 La Morra, Barolo, Monforte d'Alba, Serralunga d'Alba Ruby with orange tinges. Slightly sweet dried fruit character and savoury notes. Quite ripe and forward on the attack, but there is some real depth with Nebbiolo characteristics and good acidity. Needs food, but could be approached now. (WS) Pio Cesare 2007 Barolo 16 Drink 2012-18 Serralunga d'Alba, Grinzane, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Novello. Quite dark, medium concentrated ruby with the beginning of age on the rim. Soft, seductive with hints of oak and touch of iron. Good balance and concentration. Not amazingly complex, but very good expression of Nebbiolo. Ends a touch warm. (WS) NOVELLO Giribaldi 2007 Barolo 16.5 Drink 2013-22 Novello. Concentrated ruby with small orange rim. Very attractive sweet fruit and oak nose with notes of oatmeal. Very complete, dense mouthfeel with lots of concentration and tannin. Powerful, impressive and immediate. Very long. (WS) Armando Piazzo 2007 Barolo 16.5 Drink 2014-24 Novello. Medium concentrated ruby with bright orange tinged rim. Very reluctant nose hinting at strawberry compote. Concentrated and long but with a certain lightness on the palate. Needs time to open up. (WS) Marziano Abbona, Terlo Ravera 2007 Barolo 16 Drink 2012-18 Novello. Deep, medium concentrated ruby. Very appealing, lifted (VA) sweet cherry and orange peel and fruit-cake note. Compact, crunchy tannin and a dense fruit palate neatly cut by acidity. Modern style. (WS) Rattalino, Trentacinque 35 2007 Barolo 15.5 Drink 2014-22 Novello. Quite deep, concentrated ruby, still quite youthful looking. Smoky and bacon. Minerally. Reluctant and slow to open on the palate. Rich, viscous mouthfeel with embryonic fruit and dense, but ripe tannic feel. Bit leathery on the finish. (WS) Giacomo Grimaldi, Sotto Castello di Novello 2007 Barolo 17 Drink 2012-19 Novello. Dark ruby with orange tinged rim. Initially intense and sweetly perfumed and

minerally underneath. Potentially huge with lots of dense fruit flavours and ripe tannic structure. Seems ready. (WS) Elvio Cogno, Ravera 2007 Barolo 17 Drink 2012-19 Novello. Deep ruby. Herbs and tea leaves becoming more savoury and with minerally notes too. Understated Nebbiolo palate but at the same time very complete. Only hints of dried fruit on the finish. Ripe but clinging tannin. Hedonistic, and for now. (WS) RODDI D'ALBA Bruna Grimaldi, Bricco Ambrogio 2007 Barolo 15.5 Drink 2012-17 Roddi d'Alba. Medium ruby with orange-tinged rim. Open knit and ripe with round, sweet mellow fruit palate. Not for the long haul, but consumer friendly and not without interest. (WS) Eredi Lodali, Lorens 2007 Barolo 15 Drink 2011-16 Roddi d'Alba. Concentrated ruby with small orange rim. Very much in the dried-fruit and christmas-cake spectrum. Straightforward with lots of sweet fruit. Perhaps a tad simple. (WS) VERDUNO Belcolle 2007 Barolo 15.5 Drink 2013-18 Verduno. Medium ruby with dark centre. Leafy black tea, minerally and the merest suggestion of sweet fruit. Very good balance, and with lovely coating tannin, but fruit is silent and a bit stubborn at the moment. Nothing ostentatious here. (WS) Bosco Agostino, Neirane 2007 Barolo 16 Drink 2013-17 Verduno. Almost bright concentrated ruby. Quite closed, and almost impenetrable. More open on the palate with red lifted fruit and hints of fruit cake. Opens up with air and becomes more perfumed with strawberry. A tad austere tannin on the finish, but ongoing fragrant sweet fruit. (WS) Fratelli Alessandria, Monvigliero 2007 Barolo 15 Drink 2012-17 Verduno. Concentrated ruby with broad orange rim. Forward, sweet fruit with dusty note. Very ripe fruit makes the wine accessible now. (WS) *Comm GB Burlotto, Acclivi 2007 Barolo 15.5 Drink 2012-18 Verduno. Medium ruby with broad rim. Minerally, earthy and a touch leathery, herbal, perhaps even farmyardy. Better focus on the palate with sweet, ripe fruit, but leathery note seems to have a grip on the finish. At least at this stage. (WS) Castello di Verduno, Massara 2007 Barolo 15.5 Drink 2012-19 Verduno. Medium ruby with orange tinges. Sweet, ripe and appealing, and gaining complexity with air also on the palate. Long, peristent finish. A tad rustic perhaps. (WS)

(WS) Marchesi di Barolo, Cannubi 2007 Barolo 17 Drink 2012-19 Barolo. Almost deep youthful looking ruby. At first creamy oak notes, needs lots of air, but palate reveals fruit sustained by acidity.
