Outlook Roster numbers are lower but coach Jodee Schaben thinks scores should be, too, as she enters her second year with the Central College women's golf program. Schaben said the Dutch could receive contributions from all eight players on the roster, which features just one senior, returning letterwinner Amy Ugulini. "While we don't have a lot of depth, we have solid players with great chemistry and a great attitude," said coach Jodee Schaben. All-Iowa Conference honoree Jenni Juergens has graduated, but much of the lineup returns with Ugulini and junior two-time letterwinners Sharilyne Hoekstra, Brooke Bachelder and Jessica Monical back. The fifth spot is open. Sophomores Amanda Sullivan and Abby Dean will get a shot, but the team's lone freshman, Jordan Williams of Pella, brings strong credentials and could emerge. "If Jordan can improve her distance, she has the ability," Schaben said. "She's got a good short game." There's no obvious candidate to be the steady scoring leader that Juergens was last season. Monical posted an 86.8 stroke average while Hoekstra was at 87.1, Bachelder was at 89.1 and Ugulini was at 91.6. "I think Sharilyne (Hoekstra) could be our consistent one," Schaben said. "She could be the scorer we can always count on. Last spring, she struggled with her driver a little bit and we worked on that, but if she stays focused and mentally tough, I think she'll be very consistent for us." Schaben also likes the progress showed by the other three veterans. "We're looking to Jess (Monical) for some strong leadership," Schaben said. "She's got the game. She was right on the edge of doing really well all year last year, but she always seemed to have one or two holes that put her out of contention. "Brooke (Bachleder) has been working very hard and has a great attitude. She struggled last year off the tee, but she has the talent to do well and seems to be pulling her game together. She knows how to grind it out and fight on every shot. "Amy (Ugulini) just doesn't get frustrated and doesn't lose her focus. All of her game is pretty consistent and her ability to not get rattled really helps the team." Schaben doesn't envision much change in the Iowa Conference hierarchy this season, with defending champion Wartburg the favorite ahead of Simpson and Buena Vista. But she thinks the Dutch can inch towards cracking that inner circle after placing fourth in the league last fall. "Our goal is to maintain our position and move closer to the leaders," Schaben said. "And we want to consistently have four scores in the 80s. I feel pretty strongly we can do that. I see five players right now who can consistently score there." Schaben isn't discounting potential contributions from the other players on the roster. "I don't see any reason the others can't at least shoot in the upper 80s and low 90s," she said. The improvement needed is perhaps more mental than physical, and that's what Schaben will emphasize in preseason drills. "We have to work on our mental toughness," she said. "We can't let one bad shot rule how we play the next few holes." Schaben thinks a victory in a triangular meet at Mt. Mercy College to conclude an abbreviated spring schedule provided some off-season spark. "Winning that tournament at Mt. Mercy gave us some good momentum," she said. "And from what I've been hearing, the players have been working really hard in the summer." The Dutch get an early opportunity to see if the spring momentum carries over. The fall campaign opens with a return to the Mt. Mercy Cropper Invitational at Solon Sept. 2.
