Vision to develop the Corridor Alternative routes in use between European and Finnish markets 1. Via Scandinavia (ferry to Sweden, rail or road over Sweden, bridge or ferry to continent) 2. By the Baltic Sea to German or Polish ports and then by road or rail 3. Via Baltics (ferry to Tallinn, rail or road over Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland) – now 99% moves only by road 4. Via Russia (rail from Finland over Russia, Belarus, Poland)

New EU 27
Expansion of European Union has opened the borders...
...but existing European container-train networks are still a reflection of last century picture of EU trade No container train operators are connected by rail to Baltic States
Regular rail freight service through Baltics has never been done before
Why to develop this rail connection? 1. New sulfur fuel regulations on transport in the Baltic Sea will substancially increase a fuelcosts of the shipping lines. 0.1 % sulfur from 1 Jan 2015 (up to +40% per ton)
2. St.Petersburg is the biggest container port in Baltic Sea and it freezes. Winter surcharges are substancial. 3. Containerization level is growing. Bulk is moving into containers. 4.
St.Peterburg and Moscow industries and private consumption is growing, existing crossborder railway stations require intensive investments to increse throughput capacity
5.
Šeštokai has free capacity and LG is willing to invest into its development. Railway corridor over Baltic States has a general support from EU and state railways.
6. Railway has a priority over road in EU

Further growth of the level of containerization
4 postulates to believe
1. We believe, that level of containerization on the markets will further grow.
2. We believe, that fast and regular container block-trains in corridors can provide the best cost efficiency due to best possible utilisation of wagons and locomotives. 3. We believe in fast working run through container terminals with no need for additional shunting. 4. We believe, that intra-european continental traffic (45’ PWHC) in railways will grow faster, than international maritime traffic (20’/40’)
Modal shift – a green story
Marco Polo is the European Union's funding programme for projects which shift freight transport to sea, rail and inland waterways. This means fewer trucks on the road and thus less congestion, less pollution, and more reliable and efficient transport
